On Metacognition: Overconfidence in Word Recall Prediction and Its Association with Psychotic Symptoms in Patients with Schizophrenia.

UNLABELLED: A two-factor account has been proposed as an explanatory model for the formation and maintenance of delusions. The first factor refers to a neurocognitive process leading to a significant change in subjective experience; the second factor has been regarded as a failure in hypothesis evaluation characterized by an impairment in metacognitive ability. This study was focused on the assessment of metacognition in patients with schizophrenia. The aims of the study were to measure the overconfidence in metacognitive judgments through the prediction of word list recall and to analyze the

Psychometric assessment of beck scale for suicidal ideation (BSSI) in general population in Tehran.

BACKGROUND: Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSSI) is a widely used instrument to assess suicidality. However, there is only limited information about the psychometric characteristics of BSSI in the Persian language. In this study, we investigated the validity, reliability and factor structure of the BSSI in the general population of Tehran. METHODS: Initially, 900 questionnaire packages were distributed to the general population of Tehran (response rate: 59 percent), using cluster random sampling method. The questionnaire package consisted of a demographic questionnaire, the Persian transla

Psychological and psychiatric factors as predictors for success in sacral neuromodulation treatment.

UNLABELLED: What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is a well-established treatment for patients with chronic LUTS. The selection of eligible candidates could be improved by identifying factors that can predict a successful response. In the present study, we evaluated the role of various psychological and psychiatric factors in relation to SNM treatment. OBJECTIVE: • To evaluate if psychological and psychiatric factors can predict the outcome of test stimulation or permanent treatment with sacral neuromodulation (SNM). PATIENTS AND METHODS: • Be

M385T polymorphism in the factor V gene, but not Leiden mutation, is associated with placental abruption in Finnish women.

This study determines whether genetic variability in the gene encoding factor V contributes to differences in susceptibility to placental abruption. Allele and genotype frequencies of three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the factor V gene leading to nonsynonymous changes (M385T in exon 8, and R485K and R506Q [Leiden mutation] in exon 10) were studied in 116 Caucasian women with placental abruption and 112 healthy controls. Single-point analysis was expanded to haplotype analysis and haplotype frequencies were estimated using an expectation-maximisation (EM) algorithm. Comparison of

Association of a promoter haplotype (-1542G/-525C) in the tumor necrosis factor receptor associated factor-interacting protein gene with low bone mineral density in Japanese women.

Osteoporosis, a multifactorial common disease, is believed to result from the interplay of multiple environmental and genetic factors that regulate bone mineral density (BMD). Tumor necrosis factor receptor associated factor-interacting protein (I-TRAF) is an essential effecter of the tumor necrosis factor receptor-signaling cascade, one of the most potent bone-resorbing systems. In genetic studies of 382 Japanese adult women, we found that genotypes of two promoter variations of I-TRAF gene, -1542T/G and -525G/C, were similarly associated with radial BMD levels. Two variations were in almost

Synovial fluid concentration of five different cytokines in rheumatic diseases.

Interleukin-1 beta, interleukin-2, tumour necrosis factor alpha, and the interferons, alfa and gamma, were measured concurrently in synovial fluid samples from 68 patients with rheumatic diseases. Mean interleukin-1 beta concentrations (130.3 (SD 22) pg/ml) were higher in synovial fluids from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) than in those from patients with osteoarthritis (27.8(4.5)pg/ml), while measurements in synovial fluids from patients with seronegative spondarthritis were intermediate (72.7 (32) pg/ml). Interleukin-2 and tumour necrosis factor alpha concentrations were lower in th

Factor Structure of the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children in a Cohort of Youth With Autism.

Despite the substantial evidence base for poor sleep in autism, sleep problems are frequently under-identified and inefficiently managed. This is, in part, due to the fact that available tools do not comprehensively capture the specific sleep phenotypes in autism. The Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) is one of the highest ranked pediatric sleep assessment tools, yet it is scarcely used in autism research. Consequently, the utility of the SDSC for characterizing sleep disturbances in autism remains unknown. This study explored the factor structure of the SDSC in a sample of 513 autis

Quick MSA-QoL: A validated, abbreviated health-related quality of life questionnaire for use in Multiple System Atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life is an important patient-reported outcome, which can be assessed using instruments such as the Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) Quality of Life (MSA-QoL) scale. However, at 40-items its length can prove burdensome, particularly to patients with a disease such as MSA. This can contribute to respondent burden and poor-quality response data. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop an abbreviated MSA-QoL scale for use in clinical practise and trials (Quick MSA-QoL). METHODS: A single-factor 15-item scale was developed with data from 310 patien

Structure of Restricted Repetitive Behaviors of Individuals Referred for Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment.

PURPOSE: Restricted and/or repetitive displays of behavior, interests, or activities (RRBs) are one of the core symptom domains of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Current and past research indicates two 'clusters' of RRBs in children with ASD: repetitive sensorimotor (e.g., hand/finger and more complex motor mannerisms) and insistence on sameness (e.g., resistance to changes in the environment) behaviors. The current study aims to fill a gap by examining how RRBs may diverge in individuals with ASD and with other neurodevelopmental disorders (ONDD) in a clinical sample. METHODS: A total of 55

Expression of TNF-α, APRIL and BCMA in Behcet's disease.

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is an important proinflammatory cytokine which plays an important role in the immunopathogenesis of Behcet's disease (BD). B cell activating factor (BAFF) and its homolog A proliferation inducing ligand (APRIL) are members of the tumor necrosis factor family. BAFF binds to 3 receptors, B cell activating factor receptor (BAFF-R), transmembrane activator and calcium modulator ligand interactor (TACI), and B cell maturation antigen (BCMA) that are expressed by B cells. OBJECTIVE: Estimation of the serum levels of TNF-α, APRIL, BAFF, and BCMA in pat

Circulating microparticles in patients with antiphospholipid antibodies: characterization and associations.

The antiphospholipid syndrome is characterized by venous or arterial thrombosis and/or recurrent fetal loss in the presence of circulating antiphospholipid antibodies. These antibodies cause activation of endothelial and other cell types leading to the release of microparticles with procoagulant and pro-inflammatory properties. The aims of this study were to characterize the levels of endothelial cell, monocyte or platelet derived, and tissue factor-bearing microparticles in patients with antiphospholipid antibodies, to determine the association of circulating microparticles with anticardiolip

Social and rural determinants of glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Background and objectives The global epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is disproportionately severe in rural and agricultural populations, driven by the complex interplay of socioeconomic, behavioural, and genetic risk factors. While these determinants are acknowledged individually, few studies have validated a parsimonious, integrated measurement model to effectively structure and assess their collective influence on glycaemic control within a rural primary care context. We aimed to address this critical gap. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional, observational study utilising a pu

Effect of liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy and ischemia-reperfusion on expression of growth factor receptors.

AIM: To investigate the effects of experimental partial hepatectomy and normothermic ischemia-reperfusion damage on the time course of the expression of four different growth factor receptors in liver regeneration. This is relevant due to the potential therapeutic use of growth factors in stimulating liver regeneration. METHODS: For partial hepatectomy (PH) 80% of the liver mass was resected in Sprague Dawley rats. Ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) were induced by occlusion of the portal vein and the hepatic artery for 15 min. The epidermal growth factor receptor, hepatic growth factor receptor,

Atrial natriuretic factor in patients with congenital heart disease: correlation with hemodynamic variables.

To investigate the alpha-atrial natriuretic factor in congenital cardiac malformations, three groups of children, aged 7 months to 16 years, with different hemodynamic situations were studied during routine cardiac catheterization. Twenty-one (group I) had tetralogy of Fallot, 24 (group II) had a left to right shunt with pulmonary hypertension and 12 (control group) had a minor cardiac lesion. Alpha-atrial natriuretic factor levels were determined by a radioimmunoassay on blood samples from the inferior vena cava, right atrium, pulmonary artery, left atrium and aorta. A novel laboratory method for determining the diffusive mass flux of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) into natural clays.

In this study we developed a novel laboratory method, which aimed to robustly determine the in-situ aqueous diffusive mass fluxes of solutes derived from an organic solvent DNAPL into a natural clayey deposit. The method included the emplacement of an undisturbed clay core in a diffusion cell apparatus and the position of 1 L dichloromethane (DCM) as DNAPL on top of the water-saturated clay core. The DCM dissolution and diffusive mass flux into the clay was then determined in two different ways by 1) directly measuring DCM solvent volume loss with a capillary tube installation and 2) measuring
