PURPOSE: The aim of this nonrandomized study was to assess effects against radiation-induced enteropathy by constructing an omental pedicle hammock, thus isolating the small bowel outside the pelvis.
METHODS: Since 1991, 32 patients received the omental pedicle hammock procedure as an adjunct to definitive cancer surgery, and the perioperative experiences and toxic effects of radiation therapy were evaluated and compared with 25 patients who received pelvic floor reperitonealization only.

The paper reports three cases of optic chiasmal radionecrosis due to radiotherapy of the sellar region. These three cases are compared with 34 ones found in literature. The use of M.R.I. is shown to dramatically improve diagnosis. Corticoids are useful in the treatment. The gravity of the complication, which implies visual prognosis, focuses on a strict use of radiotherapy. For benign or slowly evoluting lesions, surgery and/or regular controls by modern imaging techniques would often be more eligible than systematic earliest irradiation.

Irradiation-associated chest wall lesions pose a significant health hazard to the patient. The principles of management include (1) biopsy of any open wounds to rule out the recurrence or persistence of tumor, (2) aggressive debridement of all offending tissues, and (3) reconstruction with well-vascularized flap tissue. To determine the effect of exposure to atomic bomb radiation on the occurrence of hyperparathyroidism, the prevalence was determined among a population of 3,948 atomic bomb survivors and their controls in Hiroshima. The diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism was based upon histopathological findings or the presence of consistent hypercalcemia and elevated levels of serum parathyroid hormone. A retrospective analysis was made of the leading syndromes of chronic radiation sickness (CRS) induced by external gamma-radiation in a dose of 1.0-9.33 Gy during the disease formation and in the long-term period (30-35 years after diagnosis). The frequency of the hematological and neurological syndromes, secretory alterations in the stomach, efficacy of rehabilitation measures, morbidity in specialists with a history of the clinical manifestations of CRS, who continue working are estimated. The incidence of the main somatic diseases is presented.

A case of sphenoid sinus mucocoele following radiotherapy in a patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma is reported. Diagnosis was made by radiological investigation and confirmed at surgery performed via a sublabial transeptal approach. Its content was completely removed and continuous drainage of the sinus was maintained by an indwelling tube. It is felt that the sphenoid mucocoele developed as a result of occlusion of the sinus ostium by scarred mucosa following radiotherapy.

Colovesical fistula often presents with recurrent or persistent urinary tract infection, especially in men. The commonest cause is diverticular disease. Other causes include carcinoma of the colon, Crohn's disease, radiotherapy and trauma. Barium enema may suggest the pathology but cystoscopy is the best investigation to confirm the presence of a fistula. One-stage resection and anastomosis is suitable for most patients with diverticular disease.

We produced radiation retinopathy in capuchin monkeys and studied them with fluorescein angiography and light and electron microscopy. Postirradiation rectovaginal fistula is a complex problem in colorectal surgery. The modified Parks procedure curettage of rectal mucosa heavily damaged by radiation is introduced. Fifteen cases of coloanal sleeve anastomosis for the repair of rectovaginal postirradiation fistula are described.
