Epidemiological Studies on Eye Diseases in Centers for Stray Dogs in Northwestern Romania.

Eye disease in dogs is a common problem that can affect both the health and well-being of the animals. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and incidence of the most common eye diseases in a large population of dogs from two stray dog centers in northwestern Romania over a two-year period. We conducted a retrospective observational study of 208 eye diseases in two dog shelters in northwestern Romania: the "Ham Ham" Association and the "Free Life" Association in Satu Mare County. The study spanned from January 2022 to December 2023. We collected data on eye disease status from

Outcome of prematurity and retinopathy of prematurity.

Retinopathy of prematurity is a disease that manifests soon after birth in the premature infant and may lead to a lifelong disability. More infants at risk for developing the retinopathy are surviving, and the ophthalmologist must be aware of possible vision abnormalities, such as decreased acuity, strabismus, nystagmus, retinal scarring, and retinal detachment, that occur during childhood and in adult life. These abnormalities may occur in children who developed only mild forms of retinopathy of prematurity during early life.

Vitrectomy surgery in proliferative sickle retinopathy.

Visual loss secondary to vitreous hemorrhage or retinal detachment can occur in proliferative sickle retinopathy. Severe complications including a high incidence of anterior segment necrosis have been reported in both vitrectomy and scleral buckling operations in patients with this disease. We examined four patients with longstanding vitreous hemorrhages or retinal detachments that were treated successfully with standard vitrectomy surgery techniques or scleral buckling procedures without serious complications.

Acute retinal pigment epitheliopathies.

A 50-year-old white woman had bilateral visual loss associated with fever, chills, and myalgias. Her systemic complaints responded to steroid therapy but visual reductions and retinal lesions have persisted for one year. Fluorescein angiographic findings are identical to those seen in acute retinal pigment epitheliitis but the clinical history is more suggestive of acute macular neuroretinopathy. These two entities may represent different clinical expressions of the same disease.

Ocular manifestations of relapsing polychondritis.

The clinical, ultrasonographic, fluorescein angiographic, and immunological features of a case of relapsing polychondritis in a 46-year-old female are described. Acute bilateral sclerouveitis with multiple retinal pigment epithelial defects and sensory retinal detachment were present on initial examination. Antibodies to type II collagen were present in serum samples taken from the patient during the acute and convalescent phase of the disease. A possible relationship of this disorder to the phylogenetic development of the eye is discussed.

Blood-retina barrier failure and vision loss in neuron-specific degeneration.

Changes in neuronal activity alter blood flow to match energy demand with the supply of oxygen and nutrients. This functional hyperemia is maintained by interactions between neurons, vascular cells, and glia. However, how changing neuronal activity prevalent at the onset of neurodegenerative disease affects neurovascular elements is unclear. Here, in mice with photoreceptor degeneration, a model of neuron-specific dysfunction, we combined assessment of visual function, neurovascular unit structure, and the blood-retina barrier permeability. We found that the rod loss paralleled remodeling of t

Evaluation of Rho kinase inhibitor effects on neuroprotection and neuroinflammation in an ex-vivo retinal explant model.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, affecting retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons. By 2040, it is likely to affect 110 million people. Neuroinflammation, specifically through the release of proinflammatory cytokines by M1 microglial cells, plays a crucial role in glaucoma progression. Indeed, in post-mortem human studies, pre-clinical models, and ex-vivo models, RGC degeneration has been consistently shown to be linked to inflammation in response to cell death and tissue damage. Recently, Rho kinase inhibitors (ROCKis) have emerged as potential therapies for neuroin

Basis and Design of a Randomized Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Effect of Levosulpiride on Retinal Alterations in Patients With Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetic Macular Edema.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are potentially blinding, microvascular retinal diseases in people with diabetes mellitus. Preclinical studies support a protective role of the hormone prolactin (PRL) due to its ocular incorporation and conversion to vasoinhibins, a family of PRL fragments that inhibit ischemia-induced retinal angiogenesis and diabetes-derived retinal vasopermeability. Here, we describe the protocol of an ongoing clinical trial investigating a new therapy for DR and DME based on elevating the circulating levels of PRL with the prokinetic, …

ROFI: a deep learning-based ophthalmic sign-preserving and reversible patient face anonymizer.

Ophthalmic diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and inherited retinal dystrophies remain leading causes of visual impairment worldwide, necessitating accurate diagnosis and longitudinal monitoring. Modern ophthalmology increasingly relies on facial and ocular imaging, yet the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into these workflows raises significant privacy concerns. ROFI (Reversible Ophthalmic Face Image anonymizer) is a novel deep learning-based framework designed to anonymize patient facial features while preserving ophthalmic signs ess

The Diverse Role of ipRGCs in Visual Perception Beyond Non-Image-Forming Functions.

The intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are the third class of photoreceptors apart from rods and cones, containing the photopigment melanopsin and are characterized into different subtypes (M1-M6) that support conscious visual perception. They transmit the light information to the brain through complex circuits serving both non-image-forming and image-forming functions. Of the total population, there are four main ipRGCs, such as M2, M4, M5 and M6 that project substantially to the image-forming visual pathway and target the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN). Butylphthalide nanoemulsion for management of dry age-related macular degeneration via antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

Dry age-related macular degeneration (dry AMD) is a posterior ocular segment disease characterized primarily by progressive retinal pigment epithelium degeneration, which is driven largely by oxidative stress. Effective treatment remains challenging owing to limited therapeutic agents and intrinsic physiological barriers that hinder drug delivery to the posterior eye. To address this, we developed a butylphthalide-loaded nanoemulsion (NBP-NE) that exhibits potent reactive oxygen species-scavenging and anti-inflammatory properties. Ex vivo permeation studies and pharmacokinetic analysis reveale

Multi-resolution and Multi-modal Feature Integration using Graph Neural Networks for Optical Coherence Tomography Image Classification.

Early and accurate diagnosis of retinal diseases is crucial, as many of these conditions can be prevented or managed effectively with timely treatment. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a widely used medical imaging technique that provides high-resolution visualization of the retina, allowing the detection of abnormalities. Current state-of-the-art methods predominantly rely on extracting either local or global features using Convolutional Neural Networks or Vision Transformers from OCT images. Moreover, few existing ensemble methods primarily focus on concatenation and decision-level feat…

Steroid-Nitroxide Hybrid Compound Protects the Retina in a Model of CNV.

Nitroxide-based drugs have proven effective in modulating radical-induced oxidative stress by modulating antioxidant enzymes and genes that control distinct immune and anti-inflammatory responses. Due to their reasonable chemical stability and ability to shuttle between oxidized and reduced forms at physiologically relevant redox potentials, nitroxide-based radicals have also proven effective as biological probes of redox status. Herein, we investigated the potential of a unique nitroxide-based antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent to protect the retina from experimentally induced degenerati
