OBJECTIVES: The examination of retinal microvascular abnormalities through fundus photography is currently the best available non-invasive technique for assessment of cerebral vascular status. Several studies in the last decade have reported higher incidences of adverse cerebrovascular events in Schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD). However, retinal microvasculature abnormalities in SCZ and BD have remained under-explored, and no study has compared this aspect of SCZ and BD till date.

A former 24-week-old premature infant was treated with intravitreal ranibizumab (Lucentis; Genentech, South San Francisco, CA) in one eye and conventional laser in the other eye for aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity in both eyes. Fluorescein angiography performed at 149 weeks of age showed persistent avascularity of the temporal peripheral retina in the ranibizumab-treated eye. PURPOSE: To assess choroidal vascular changes among patients with tubercular multifocal serpiginoid choroiditis (TB MSC) using previously validated techniques.
METHODS: Patients with TB MSC (n = 18) and healthy controls (n = 30) underwent enhanced-depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) imaging. Using previously validated algorithm of image binarization, EDI-OCT scans were segmented to derive total choroidal area, luminal area, stromal area, and choroidal vascularity index (CVI).

Normal human retinal vascular development uses angiogenesis and vasculogenesis, both of which are interrupted in the vaso-obliteration phase of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Canine oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) closely resembles human ROP. PURPOSE: To report results applying diode laser photocoagulation to both the peripheral avascular retina and the ridge in stage 3+ threshold retinopathy of prematurity.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective review of 82 consecutive eyes in 43 preterm infants with threshold disease who had both the peripheral avascular retina and the ridge treated with diode laser photocoagulation. With a minimum follow-up of 3 months, these eyes were evaluated for intraoperative and postoperative complications and long-term anatomic results.
RESULTS: A favorable anatomic outcome occurred in 79 eyes

Greater optic nerve and visual field damage has been reported in eyes with primary open angle glaucoma that also have cilioretinal arteries compared with fellow eyes that do not have cilioretinal arteries. The visual prognosis of 148 eyes in patients with an active subfoveal or juxtafoveal subretinal neovascular membrane (SRNVM) in the presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome (POHS) was reviewed. Average follow-up was 39 months. One hundred twenty of 148 eyes (81.1%) had a final visual acuity worse than 20/40. One hundred three of 148 eyes (69.6%) had a final visual acuity equal to or worse than 20/200. Systemic and/or periocular steroids had no effect on final visual outcome. Factors affecting final visual outcome are described and prognosis in the fellow eye is discussed.

We studied prospectively a large kindred afflicted with von Hippel-Lindau disease. Of 111 members examined ophthalmoscopically, 14 definite retinal angiomas were found and three lesions were thought to be angiomas. The lesions found could be divided into the following three groups: (1) classic angiomas, (2) atypical angiomas, and (3) lesions indicative of early angiomas. A correlation between increasing age, systemic evidence of disease, and size and appearance of angiomas was found.

Two siblings suffering from congenital Leber amaurosis were found to be affected also by juvenile nephronophtisis. Keratoconus in one child and mental retardation in the other developed during their later growth. An extensive laboratory study showed normal results but revealed an impaired urinary concentrating ability. The hereditary pattern operating in this complex disease was found to be consistent with an autosomal recessive trait.
