Prevalence of and Risk Factors for Adhesive Capsulitis of the Shoulder in Older Adults from Germany.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for adhesive capsulitis in older adults from Germany. The one-year and lifetime prevalence of adhesive capsulitis were assessed in adults aged ≥65 years with at least one visit to one of 1207 general practices in Germany in 2021. Associations between physical and psychiatric conditions and adhesive capsulitis were further assessed in older patients diagnosed for the first time with adhesive capsulitis in general practices in 2010-2021 (index date) and matched (1:5) to patients without adhesive capsulitis using a propensity scor

Functional outcomes in athletes after modified anterior capsulolabral reconstruction.

During a 7-month period, 32 consecutive athletes underwent anterior capsulolabral reconstruction with modifications, consisting of a horizontal capsulotomy (rather than a T-capsulotomy) and suture anchors (rather than drill holes); 31 patients were available for follow-up examinations. At preoperative examinations all patients demonstrated positive relocation tests; 22 were diagnosed with recurrent anterior subluxation and 9 with recurrent anterior dislocation. After surgery, all patients underwent a rehabilitation program. Followup included physical examination, subjective questions, and radi

Risk factors associated with severe perineal lacerations during vaginal delivery: a 10-year propensity score-matched observational study.

BACKGROUND: Severe perineal lacerations are rare obstetrical complications in high-income countries. However, the prevention of obstetric anal sphincter injuries is crucial because of their long-term consequences on a woman's digestive function, sexual-mental health, and well-being. The probability of obstetric anal sphincter injuries can be predicted by assessing antenatal and intrapartum risk factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the incidence of obstetric anal sphincter injuries at a single institution for 10 years and to identify women more at risk by evaluating the relationship

[Severe injury type procedures-Influence of the cipher 11 "complications" and the COVID-19 pandemic on a center for maximum care of severe injuries].

INTRODUCTION: Ensuring the best treatment options for injured patients (healing process, Heilverfahren, HV) is the main goal and responsibility of the German statutory accident insurance (DGUV). The injury type catalogue is the tool to guide the HV. The development of the number of cases treated in a center for severe injury type procedures, the effects of the cipher 11 "complications" of the catalogue and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are presented. METHODS: A retrospective study of all patients treated in the context of the DGUV from January 2019 to December 2021 was carried out. The

MIPO of proximal humerus fractures through an anterolateral acromial approach. Is the axillary nerve at risk?

PURPOSE: It is known that shoulder surgery may cause iatrogenic injury to the axillary nerve as a serious complication, but there is little evidence to indicate whether the axillary nerve is at risk of injury during an anterolateral acromial approach for minimally-invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) of proximal humerus fractures. We hypothesised that this surgical method is safe for the axillary nerve and would preserve it from iatrogenic injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective follow-up cohort study on 49 consecutive patients with proximal humerus fractures who were manage

Impact of hemodynamics in individual shoulder structures on pain intensity in patients with rotator cuff tear.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears (RCTs) commonly cause shoulder pain and functional impairment in middle-aged and elderly individuals. Despite their varying clinical presentations, the mechanisms underlying pain development and exacerbation in RCT remain poorly understood. The relationship between increased blood flow around the shoulder joint and pain has recently attracted increasing attention. Dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been established as an imaging study for assessing local hemodynamics in various fields, and we utilized this technique to evaluate hemodynamic changes in th

How to choose the best lateralization and distalization of the reverse shoulder arthroplasty to optimize the clinical outcome in cuff tear arthropathy.

BACKGROUND: Lateralization shoulder angle (LSA) and distalization shoulder angle (DSA) are 2 parameters that have been described for a better planification of arthroplasty, but the range of these angles is very wide. The purpose of this study was to investigate the best combination in terms of lateralization and distalization to optimize the outcome of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) for cuff tear arthropathy (CTA) with a functional deltoid. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study, conducted between 2014 and 2018 at a specialized shoulder unit in Paris, focused on patients exclusi

Can reverse shoulder arthroplasty in post-traumatic revision surgery restore the ability to perform activities of daily living?

BACKGROUND: Failed shoulder arthroplasty and failed internal fixation in fractures of the proximal humerus can benefit from implantation of a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). While there is some evidence that RSA can improve function regarding range of motion (ROM), pain, satisfaction, and strength, there is sparse data how this translates into activities of daily living (ADLs). A marker-based 3D video motion analysis system has recently been designed that can measure changes of ROM in dynamic movements in every plane. The hypothesis was that a gain of maximum ROM also translates int

Concentric and eccentric shoulder rehabilitation biomechanics.

The use of an impulse-momentum (IM) exercise technique was investigated for end-stage shoulder rehabilitation. The objectives of this study were to: (a) quantify the net shoulder joint forces and moments while using an IM system and (b) test the influence of gender and muscle loading type (concentric or eccentric) on kinetic and kinematic parameters. Fourteen healthy adults (eight males, six females) performed a repeated measures experiment on an instrumented device utilizing a cabled shuttle system. While maintaining 90 degrees of shoulder abduction and 90 degrees of elbow flexion, the subjec
