For CN(-) recognition, a series of bisindolyl compounds 1-3 were prepared, and their chromodosimetric color changes toward anions were investigated. Nucleophilic addition of the cyanide ion to the meso position of the bisindolyl group gave rise to breaking of the double bond conjugation, thereby inducing spectroscopic changes in the compound. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles 3 also gave color changes from deep orange to yellow in response to the cyanide ion.

Plate-like particles of SBA-15 form from smaller units (primary particles) that aggregate in an oriented manner. In this report we influence this aggregation by adding salt to the ongoing synthesis, generating well-ordered hexagonal p6m structure (SBA-15), with varying particle diameters. Vertical pipes comprised of loose silica and lined by chert nodules have been observed in the abandoned Mafeking Quarry in central Manitoba, Canada. BACKGROUND: Ingestion of sand can cause colic, diarrhoea and weight loss in horses, but these signs are unspecific and can have many other causes. The amount of sand that induces disease may vary between individuals. To avoid over-diagnosing, it is important to determine the amount of sand that can be found in horses without clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease. The aim of this study was to use previously suggested parameters for establishing a radiographic diagnosis of sand colic, and compare these findings between a sand colic group and a control group.

It is well-known that high ionic strength promotes colloid aggregation. Here we show that, by controlling this aggregation process, we can produce high yields of homodoublet and heterodoublet polymer colloids. The aggregation process is started by increasing the ionic strength to roughly 250 mM KCl. We defined mixed-dust pneumoconiosis (MDP) pathologically as a pneumoconiosis showing dust macules or mixed-dust fibrotic nodules (MDF), with or without silicotic nodules (SN), in an individual with a history of exposure to mixed dust. We defined the latter arbitrarily as a mixture of crystalline silica and nonfibrous silicates. According to our definition of MDP, therefore, MDF should outnumber SN in the lung to make a pathologic diagnosis of MDP.
