Four Decades of Stress, Depression, and Close Relationships: Lessons from Psychoneuroimmunology.

Human psychoneuroimmunology research has demonstrated that stress, depression, and close relationships reliably shape immune and endocrine function in ways that matter for health. Across studies of examination stress, laboratory stressors, marital discord, cancer survivorship, and dementia caregiving, psychosocial adversity predicts more infections, weaker vaccine responses and faster erosion of vaccine protection, slower wound healing, heightened inflammation, and accelerated cellular aging. Depression also sensitizes immune function, producing larger inflammatory responses when individuals e

Agrivoltaics can reduce political polarization and local opposition to solar energy on land.

As solar energy deployment on land intensifies, political polarization and local opposition increasingly challenge its social acceptance. We propose that agrivoltaics - a dual land-use technology that combines solar power generation with agricultural production - can help bridge ideological divides and reduce local opposition by minimizing land-use conflicts and offering additional benefits to rural communities. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a pre-registered, field-embedded experiment with a representative sample (2145 Swiss residents) just prior to a national renewable energy referend

Transforming Clinical Education While Addressing System Gaps: Student Leadership Experiences (SLEs).

Health and social care systems are increasingly characterized by complexity, resource constraints, and evolving service demands, requiring educational models that prepare learners to navigate and lead within dynamic environments. Student Leadership Experiences (SLEs) are proposed as a theory-informed educational model that extends beyond traditional workplace-based learning by intentionally integrating system responsiveness, collaborative leadership, and interprofessional engagement. SLEs are structured around identified system or practice gaps and position students not only as participants in

Clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of diffuse glioma-related epilepsy: 2025 update.

Diffuse glioma-related epilepsy (dGRE) frequently presents with epilepsy as the initial symptom and is closely associated with tumor progression or recurrence, imposing significant social and psychological burdens on patients. The pathogenesis of dGRE is highly complex, involving both peritumoral microenvironmental mechanisms and tumor-intrinsic factors. Diagnosis requires a comprehensive approach integrating neuroimaging, EEG, molecular biomarkers, and spatial correlation between the tumor and the epileptogenic zone. Management aims to control seizures and improve prognosis. Non-enzyme-induci

Essential standards for perinatal care of women and children living in prison.

The female prison population continues to rise, with prisons worldwide failing to meet international human rights standards. Many are overcrowded, poorly resourced, and unsafe, especially for women. Women in prison are an obstetric group at high risk, with deficits in perinatal care leading to preventable maternal and child morbidity and mortality. Mother-child imprisonment and mother-child separation can have substantial intergenerational health and social consequences. In this Viewpoint, we present essential standards for perinatal care of women and children who are incarcerated, aligned to

Leveraging patient and their surrogate caregiver communication with clinicians to predict palliative care decisions: A speech processing study.

BACKGROUND: Managed Long-term Care (MLTC) integrates various services for individualized, holistic care, where palliative care (PC) is beneficial for complex patients, but initial communication processes in PC remain underexplored. PURPOSE: (1) To establish a pipeline for analyzing speech characteristics and (2) to predict the PC preference (i.e., acceptance or refusal). METHODS: This study analyzed 79 recorded phone calls (15.4 h) between patients and clinicians (i.e., nurses or social workers), extracting acoustic features and transcriptions. These features were combined with demographic a

An associative learning account of how saliva becomes a cue for comfort.

A recent study by Thomas et al. (2022) showed that 8.5- to 10-month-olds use saliva sharing as an indicator of relationship closeness: infants expect that someone who previously shared saliva with a partner will also comfort that partner during times of distress. The current paper offers a mechanistic explanation for this finding. We propose that through everyday experiences, saliva sharing and comforting become integrated into an enriched representation that contains information about both events. Across five simulations, we show that when this proposal is implemented in a connectionist compu

Emerging artificial intelligence advances in oncology: latest updates from the 2026 AACR annual meeting.

Advances presented at the 2026 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting highlight a shift from standalone artificial intelligence (AI) models to integrated, agentic systems across oncology. Platforms such as Synapse enable large-scale data coordination, supporting interoperable and reproducible research. Building on this foundation, conversational and multi-agent AI tools (e.g., DrBioRight, GP CoPilot, Isabl AI Agent) allow natural language interaction with multimodal cancer data, lowering technical barriers. Agentic frameworks for real-world data (RWD) transformation, in

Building Transit Confidence: A Nonprofit Summer Camp's Approach to Youth Transportation Literacy in Austin.

Many young people in the United States lack the exposure, confidence, and skills necessary to use public transportation independently. Our nonprofit in Austin, Texas addresses this gap by integrating daily public transit use into its summer camp experience. Each day, children (campers) and teens (volunteers) receive training and are led by camp leaders through the city using public transportation to reach educational destinations. This hands-on approach aligns with experiential learning theory, which emphasizes learning through action and reflection. It also reflects the PRECEDE-PROCEED model,

Flourishing in chronic disease care: a narrative review and proposed conceptual framework.

The growing burden of chronic diseases has increased interest in both psychological distress and positive psychological functioning among people living with chronic conditions. In this context, flourishing may be understood as the capacity to maintain positive functioning, meaning, social connectedness, and personal growth while adapting to long-term illness. This narrative review examines the conceptualization, theoretical foundations, current evidence, measurement instruments, and factors associated with flourishing in chronic disease populations. Insights from Keyes' Mental Health Continuum

The psychological toll of financial volatility: compulsive habits, gambling parallels, and social policy implications.

This mini-review synthesizes recent interdisciplinary evidence showing that financial market volatility carries psychological as well as economic costs. Across 36 studies, two domains emerge: (1) traditional market turbulence, where shocks are linked to economic anxiety, household stress transmission, and panic-selling associated with traits such as neuroticism and hyperbolic discounting; and (2) cryptocurrency and speculative asset markets, where Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), impulsivity, and herding promote short-term, gambling-like risk taking, particularly among younger or inexperienced inve

Introduction to the Special Issue: Prevalence and Characteristics of Child Sexual Abuse Perpetration in Australia, the United States, and United Kingdom.

This special issue presents findings from the largest multi-country study of men's self-reported sexual interest and behaviour towards children, addressing critical gaps in evidence on the prevalence, correlates, and prevention of child sexual exploitation and abuse perpetration. Drawing on three nationally representative male samples from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the seven papers provide the first cross-national estimates of undetected child sexual exploitation and abuse behaviour, identify demographic, psychological, developmental, and attitudinal factors associa

Microglia, cerebellar inflammation, and autism spectrum disorders: Developmental mechanisms and therapeutic perspectives.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviors. These conditions often co-occur with medical issues linked to synaptic alterations, which compromise synaptic integrity and are associated with brain circuit dysfunction. Both human and animal studies have identified cerebellar structural and functional alterations in subsets of ASD cases, with evidence of abnormal morphology and disrupted connectivity correlating with symptom severity. Numerous studies further sugg

[Strengthening the prevention and control of visual impairment among children in China].

Children's visual health serves as a strategic cornerstone for national health and human capital, exerting a lifelong influence that profoundly shapes individual development and social well-being. At present, visual impairment among Chinese children is characterized by a high overall prevalence and a complex, multifactorial etiology. Major conditions include refractive errors, amblyopia, strabismus, congenital cataract, congenital glaucoma, retinopathy of prematurity, and cerebral visual impairment. A substantial proportion of these impairments are preventable or curable; however, the current

The role of astrocytes in autism spectrum disorder and associated syndromes: Evidence, animal models, mechanisms, and therapeutic potential.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition clinically defined by persistent social deficits and restricted, repetitive behavior. Several other neurodevelopmental disorders exhibit these core clinical features of ASD and are therefore classified as "syndromic ASD". Although neurons have been the primary research focus on ASD and associated syndromes, accumulating evidence highlights astrocytes as critical contributors to disease mechanisms. Astrocytes are essential for regulating synapse development, neurotransmitter balance, and neuroinflammation in the brain. In this rev

Systematic Review of Use of Motivational Interviewing to Increase Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Care Continuum Participation.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a prevention approach with potential for reducing HIV incidence with widespread adoption. Despite this, more research is needed to inform interventions to optimize PrEP use. Motivational interviewing (MI) shows promise for enhancing PrEP utilization, however, research comprehensively examining its effectiveness in advancing PrEP care continuum participation remains limited. This study aims to address this deficit through a systematic literature review, utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Let Evidence G
