Behaviors mimicking seizures in institutionalized individuals with multiple disabilities and epilepsy: a video-EEG study.

We reviewed 824 video-EEG telemetry requests of institutionalized patients with epilepsy, searching for evaluations of "new seizure types" identified by staff (caregivers, teachers, therapists, LPNs, RNs). Of the 63 newly identified "seizure types," epilepsy was confirmed in 4 (6.3%); 59 represented nonepileptic events. Causes for diagnostic confusion in the profoundly retarded included stereotypic repeated blinking, swallowing, buccolingual movements, spontaneous grimacing, periods of apparent psychomotor arrest and increased muscle tone, dystonic posturing, and irascible personality emerging

Conditional disruption of synaptic transmission induces male-male courtship behavior in Drosophila.

It is reported here that male-male courtship behavior is evoked instantaneously in the fruit fly Drosophila by conditional disruption of synaptic transmission. A temperature-sensitive allele of the Drosophila dynamin gene shibire (shi(ts1)) was expressed by using the GAL4/UAS system to disrupt synaptic transmission from GAL4-positive neurons in a temperature-dependent manner. An enhancer-trap GAL4 line C309 directing shi(ts1) expression in central and peripheral neurons (C309/UAS-shi(ts1)) initiated stereotypical precopulatory behavior toward other mature males immediately after a temperature

cAMP response element-binding protein is required for dopamine-dependent gene expression in the intact but not the dopamine-denervated striatum.

The cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) is believed to play a pivotal role in dopamine (DA) receptor-mediated nuclear signaling and neuroplasticity. Here we demonstrate that the significance of CREB for gene expression depends on the experimental paradigm. We compared the role of CREB in two different but related models: l-DOPA administration to unilaterally 6-hydroxydopamine lesioned rats, and cocaine administration to neurologically intact animals. Antisense technology was used to produce a local knockdown of CREB in the lateral caudate-putamen, a region that mediates the dyskinetic

Zebra finch CB1 cannabinoid receptor: pharmacology and in vivo and in vitro effects of activation.

Zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) learn vocal behavior during sensitive developmental periods, similar to the way in which human language is acquired. As adults, they recite the learned song pattern in a stereotyped manner. Previously, we demonstrated that central nervous system-associated cannabinoid receptors (CB1) are expressed in brain regions known to control both juvenile song learning and adult recitation of song. Here we extend these findings by establishing the zebra finch as a behavioral model to study cannabinoid pharmacology, showing that the cannabinoid agonist WIN55212-2 inhibi

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome with and without obsessive-compulsive disorder compared with obsessive-compulsive disorder without tics: which symptoms discriminate?

Stereotyped repetitive behaviors occur in Gilles de la Tourette's Syndrome (GTS) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The present study was undertaken to compare the distribution of obsessive-compulsive and Tourette-related impulsive behaviors in GTS with (+) OCD, GTS without (-) OCD, tic-free OCD, and control subjects. Fourteen GTS + OCD, 18 GTS-OCD, 21 OCD-tic, and 29 control subjects were evaluated using a semistructured interview designed to assess GTS and OCD-related repetitive behaviors. Each reported item was evaluated on the presence of anxiety and goal-directedness. This informati

Signal transduction in eclosion hormone-induced secretion of ecdysis-triggering hormone.

Inka cells of insect epitracheal glands (EGs) secrete preecdysis and ecdysis-triggering hormones (PETH and ETH) at the end of each developmental stage. Both peptides act in the central nervous system to evoke the ecdysis behavioral sequence, a stereotype behavior during which old cuticle is shed. Secretion of ETH is stimulated by a brain neuropeptide, eclosion hormone (EH). EH evokes accumulation of cGMP followed by release of ETH from Inka cells, and exogenous cGMP evokes secretion of ETH. The secretory responses to EH and cGMP are inhibited by the broad-spectrum kinase inhibitor staurosporin

Familial frontotemporal dementia with ubiquitin-positive, tau-negative inclusions.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features, neuropathology, and genetic studies in a family with autosomal dominant frontotemporal dementia (FTD). BACKGROUND: Clinical Pick's disease, or FTD with parkinsonism, has been described in several families linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17). Most of these have shown tau protein mutations. The clinical and pathologic variations in these families resemble the spectrum of sporadic FTD or "Pick complex." METHODS: Clinical and behavioral analysis of the affected members with extensive histochemical and neuropathologic description of three cases, genetic

Stimulus history alters behavioral responses of neuronal growth cones.

Generally, it is assumed that growth cones respond to a specific guidance cue with a single, specific, and stereotyped behavior. However, there is evidence to suggest that previous exposure to a given cue might alter subsequent responses to that cue (Snow and Letourneau, 1992; Shirasaki et al., 1998). We therefore tested the hypothesis that growth cone responses to stimuli are dependent on the history of previous stimulation. Growth cones of chick dorsal root ganglion neurons were exposed to well characterized stimuli: (1) contact with a laminin-coated bead, which causes growth cone turning, o

Effects of repetitive motor training on movement representations in adult squirrel monkeys: role of use versus learning.

Current evidence indicates that repetitive motor behavior during motor learning paradigms can produce changes in representational organization in motor cortex. In a previous study, we trained adult squirrel monkeys on a repetitive motor task that required the retrieval of food pellets from a small-diameter well. It was found that training produced consistent task-related changes in movement representations in primary motor cortex (M1) in conjunction with the acquisition of a new motor skill. In the present study, we trained adult squirrel monkeys on a similar motor task that required pellet re

Network architectures and circuit function: testing alternative hypotheses in multifunctional networks.

Understanding how species-typical movement patterns are organized in the nervous system is a central question in neurobiology. The current explanations involve 'alphabet' models in which an individual neuron may participate in the circuit for several behaviors but each behavior is specified by a specific neural circuit. However, not all of the well-studied model systems fit the 'alphabet' model. The 'equation' model provides an alternative possibility, whereby a system of parallel motor neurons, each with a unique (but overlapping) field of innervation, can account for the production of stereo

Behavioral, toxic, and neurochemical effects of sydnocarb, a novel psychomotor stimulant: comparisons with methamphetamine.

Sydnocarb (3-(beta-phenylisopropyl)-N-phenylcarbamoylsydnonimine) is a psychostimulant in clinical practice in Russia as a primary and adjunct therapy for a host of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and depression. It has been described as a stimulant with an addiction liability and toxicity less than that of amphetamines. The present study undertook to evaluate the psychomotor stimulant effects of sydnocarb in comparison to those of methamphetamine. Sydnocarb increased locomotor activity of mice with reduced potency (approximately 10-fold) and efficacy compared with methamphetami

Behavioral effects of cocaine on a transgenic mouse model of cortical-limbic compulsion.

We previously created a transgenic mouse model of cortical-limbic induced compulsions in which dopamine D1 receptor-expressing (D1+) neurons in restricted regional subsets of the cortex and amygdala express a neuropotentiating cholera toxin (CT) transgene. These 'D1CT' mice engage in complex behavioral abnormalities uniquely resembling human compulsions, such as non-aggressive biting of cagemates during grooming, repeated leaping and episodes of perseverance of any and all normal behaviors. Because both compulsions and cocaine-induced behaviors may represent forms of psychomotor activation tha

A case of agitated catatonia.

Agitation is one of the diagnostic features of catatonia in the DSM IV classification, but permanent forms of agitated catatonia have occasionally been described. We report the case of a 43-year-old man who had already suffered from undifferentiated schizophrenia for 7 years, and in whom we diagnosed agitated catatonia. While our patient was being treated with a neuroleptic during a second episode of paranoia, a state of agitation was observed which persisted for a further 8 months. During this period, he was treated with several different neuroleptics and benzodiazepines, either alone or in a

Anti-convulsant and adverse effects of the glycineB receptor ligands, D-cycloserine and L-701,324: comparison with competitive and non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists.

In this study, the anticonvulsant and adverse effects of compounds that belong to four different categories of systemically available N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor ligands were compared, namely the competitive antagonist CGP 40116, the noncompetitive antagonist MK-801 (dizocilpine), the glycineB receptor antagonist L-701,324, and the glycineB receptor high-efficacy partial agonist D-cycloserine. The maximal electroshock seizures (MES), which are widely used to detect drug efficacy against generalized tonic-clonic seizures in humans, were produced by transcorneal electrical stimulation.

Interactions between D1 and D2 dopamine receptor family agonists and antagonists: the effects of chronic exposure on behavior and receptor binding in rats and their clinical implications.

Functional interactions between dopamine receptor subtypes may affect behavioral and biochemical responses which serve as models for neuropsychiatric illnesses and the clinical effects of drug therapy. We evaluated the effects of chronic exposure to the selective D1 receptor antagonist SCH 23390, and the selective D2 receptor antagonist metoclopramide, on spontaneous and drug-induced behavior and receptor density in rats, and then determined how these effects would be modified by concurrent administration of antagonists or agonists [SKF 38393, LY 171555 (quinpirole)] selective for the compleme

Electrocardiographic and electrophysiologic characterization of atypical atrial flutter in man: use of activation and entrainment mapping and implications for catheter ablation.

INTRODUCTION: Although the circuit in typical counterclockwise atrial flutter has been clearly delineated, the mechanisms of "atypical atrial flutters" have been less well characterized. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ECG and electrophysiologic (EP) characteristics of atypical atrial flutter. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty-three patients with at least one form of atypical atrial flutter underwent EP evaluation with multipolar atrial activation and entrainment mapping. Nineteen patients with clockwise flutter had: (1) stereotypic ECG morphology; (2) same cycle length as counterc

[The serotonin syndrome: review of the literature and description of an original study].

In animals the occurrence of a behavioural syndrome consisting of hyperactivity, stereotyped movements and increase of temperature has been induced by MAOIs, 5-HT precursors (L-tryptophan) and 5-HT reuptake inhibitors. Most of these manifestations were specifically blocked by a pretreatment with an inhibitor of serotonin synthesis. In humans, the association of myoclonus, diarrhea, confusion, hypomania, agitation, hyperreflexia, shivering, incoordination, fever and diaphoresis, when patients are treated with serotoninergic agents, could constitute a "serotonin syndrome". Such cases of serotoni

Oligodeoxynucleotide antisense to the D1 dopamine receptor mRNA inhibits D1 dopamine receptor-mediated behaviors in normal mice and in mice lesioned with 6-hydroxydopamine.

The effects of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of a 20-mer phosphorothioate oligodeoxynucleotide antisense to the D1 dopamine receptor mRNA (D1 antisense) on D1 dopamine receptor-mediated behaviors were studied in normal mice and in mice with unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine-induced lesions of corpus striatum. Treating mice with D1 antisense inhibited grooming behavior induced by the D1 dopamine receptor agonist SKF 38393 [1-phenyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3 benzazepine-7,8-diol hydrochloride], the reduction in grooming being related to the amount and length of time D1 antisense was g

The gynecologist and breast disease.

The designation of the obstetrician-gynecologist as a principal physician for women may impose new responsibilities on them, but in reality it merely reaffirms what most obstetrician-gynecologists have long regarded as standard practice. The gynecologist has always insisted that breast examination is an integral part of the evaluation of every patient and the basic knowledge of breast disease is certainly as essential as any understanding of obstetric and gynecologic problems. The obstetrician-gynecologist should follow certain guidelines that will help achieve in making an early diagnosis. Th

Factors influencing breast-feeding among adolescents.

During a 15-month study period, 244 adolescent mothers under 18 years of age were surveyed, of whom 53% elected to breast-feed. A subset of 60 primiparous breast-feeding adolescents were studied regarding the influence of several factors on the duration of breast-feeding. An attitude questionnaire was administered in the hospital within 48 hours of delivery. Follow-up interviews were obtained by telephone or in person at approximately 2 weeks and 2 months after birth. Eighty-three percent made the decision to breast-feed before the third trimester. Thirty-five percent discontinued breast-feedi
