A Call for Inclusion: Children With Intellectual Disabilities in Trauma Treatment Research.

BACKGROUND: Children with intellectual disabilities (ID) experience disparities in mental health care despite experiencing increased exposure to trauma such as physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Studies have suggested that the exclusion of people with ID from medical research may contribute to disparities in health care. It is currently unknown to what extent children with ID are excluded from trauma treatment research. METHODS: All randomised controlled trials (RCTs) (n = 62) included in the most up-to-date International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) clinical care guideline

Heterogeneous trajectories of depression and resilience following limb amputation.

OBJECTIVE: To identify longitudinal trajectories of depression in the first 6 months following limb loss and to explore baseline predictors of trajectories, including pain and demographic factors. A secondary aim was to evaluate whether trajectories of depression were associated with elevated symptoms of posttraumatic stress (PTS) at 6 months. DESIGN: Secondary longitudinal data analysis of an inception cohort study of persons with new-onset limb loss. Participants completed assessments at three intervals (initial, 3 months, and 6 months). SETTING: Hospitalized care, acute rehabilitation, am

Optimizing Family Presence through Medical Education.

AbstractMany family members are wary of asking whether they can be present in the intensive care unit (ICU) while patients are receiving care. However, the opportunity to be present can be profoundly beneficial, especially to family members as they approach the grieving process. In the long run, this may decrease emotional complications such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex grief. Family presence may also be profoundly important to patients, who may find comfort in the presence of their loved ones. Optimizing the needs of distressed families remains a controversial topic be

Spaced conditioned stimulus presentation facilitates the extinction of strong fear memory in mice.

Inducing fear memory extinction by re-presenting a conditioned stimulus (CS) is the foundation of exposure therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Investigating differences in the ability of different CS presentation patterns to induce extinction learning is crucial for improving this type of therapy. Using a trace fear conditioning paradigm in mice, we demonstrate that spaced presentation of the CS facilitated the extinction of a strong fear memory to a greater extent than continuous CS presentation. These results lay the groundwork for developing more effective exposure therapy te

Symphony of Success: Leader-Practitioner Reciprocity during Evidence-Based Practice Implementation.

This study aimed to explore the reciprocal relationships between implementation leadership and practitioner implementation citizenship behavior during the implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs). Data were collected at two timepoints with a time lag of six months during a national implementation of evidence-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder in Norwegian mental health clinics. Data from 72 leaders and 346 practitioners were analyzed with a two-wave cross-lagged panel model, accounting for the nested structure and adjusting for demographic variables. Significant positi

Cognitive therapy for PTSD following multiple-trauma exposure in children and adolescents: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive therapy for PTSD (CT-PTSD) is an efficacious treatment for children and adolescents with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following single incident trauma, but there is a lack of evidence relating to this approach for youth with PTSD following exposure to multiple traumatic experiences. AIMS: To assess the safety, acceptability and feasibility of CT-PTSD for youth following multiple trauma, and obtain a preliminary estimate of its pre-post effect size. METHOD: Nine children and adolescents (aged 8-17 years) with multiple-trauma PTSD were recruited to a case series

Indirectly acquired fear memories have distinct, sex-specific molecular signatures from directly acquired fear memories.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe anxiety disorder that affects women more than men. About 30% of patients suffering from PTSD develop the disorder by witnessing a traumatic event happen to someone else. However, as the focus has remained on those directly experiencing the traumatic event, whether indirectly acquired fear memories that underlie PTSD have the same molecular signature as those that are directly acquired remains unknown. Here, using a rodent indirect fear learning paradigm where one rat (observer) watches another rat (demonstrator) associate an auditory cue with f

The day-to-day relationship between posttraumatic stress symptoms and social support after sexual assault.

Background: Experiencing sexual assault is associated with a significant increase in risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder and related concerns (e.g. alcohol misuse). Cross-sectional and longitudinal evidence suggests that social support may be both broadly protective against and eroded by posttraumatic stress symptoms. However, little is known about how different aspects of social support and posttraumatic stress symptoms influence each other in the weeks and months immediately following sexual assault, when posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms first emerge. Objective: The present s

Early mother-infant interactions within the context of childbirth-related posttraumatic stress symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth may lead to perinatal mental health issues, such as childbirth-related posttraumatic stress symptoms (CB-PTSS), depression, and anxiety. Despite well explored mother-infant interactions in the context of maternal depression and anxiety, only limited studies investigated mother-infant interactions in the context of CB-PTSS, which is the aim of the present study. METHODS: One-hundred mother-infant dyads in the French speaking part of Switzerland were classified into three groups: birth-related symptoms (BRS, i.e., symptoms of re-experiencing and avoidance) (n = 20), gener

Associations between transdiagnostic traits of psychopathology and hybrid posttraumatic stress disorder factors in a trauma-exposed community sample.

Dimensional conceptualizations of psychopathology hold promise for understanding the high rates of comorbidity with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Linking PTSD symptoms to transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology may enable researchers and clinicians to understand the patterns and breadth of behavioral sequelae following traumatic experiences that may be shared with other psychiatric disorders. To explore this premise, we recruited a trauma-exposed online community sample (N = 462) and measured dimensional transdiagnostic traits of psychopathology using parceled facets derived from
