A water-soluble polysaccharide was isolated from Crassostrea gigas (CGPS-1) by hot-water extraction, isoelectric precipitation, hydrolysis and ultrafiltration without using ethanol. Based on the calibration with Dextran, CGPS-1 had a molecular weight of approximately 6.5×10(6) Da. In the present work, we have studied whether cell death could be induced in cortical neurons from rats subjected to different period of O2 deprivation and low glucose (ODLG). This "in vitro" model is designed to emulate the penumbra area under ischemia. In this study, a water-soluble polysaccharide (POPw) was successfully purified and identified from the fruiting bodies of Pleurotus ostreatus, with a molecular weight of 2.3×10(4)Da.
