[Electrocardiographic changes and rhythm problems in the diabetic].

Diabetes is a cause of serious myocardial disease related to an increased incidence of coronary artery disease, probably aggravated by cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN). In its incipient form, CAN hardly changes the sinus rhythm with an increase in nocturnal heart rate but without an appreciable effect on the indices of variability. In more advanced forms, "CAN+", there are not only changes in the heart rate variability but also in ventricular repolarisation. It is classical to underline the value of the corrected QT interval but this index has little real value. The "QT dispersion", comparin

The neuronal control of the lower urinary tract: A model of architecture and control mechanisms.

The human micturition cycle is controlled by central and peripheral nervous structures and connections. In literature, no complete or generally accepted model describes the principles of micturition control. In this paper, the integration of (neuro-)anatomy, (neuro-)physiology and control theory is used to describe and model the neuronal control of the lower urinary tract. Neuroanatomy supplies the most basic information necessary for the modellation of the peripheral pathways and central connections involved in the control of the uropoetic system. It is found that not all the nervous structur

[Effects of spinal cord stimulation implantation on heart rate variability in patients with postherpetic neuralgia].

OBJECTIVES: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a severe and distressing complication in elderly patients with herpes zoster and is associated with increased sympathetic nervous system activity. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) implantation has been shown to effectively relieve PHN. In recent years, heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, as a reliable and objective indicator of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, has been widely used in the assessment of chronic pain. This study aims to investigate the clinical effects of SCS implantation on HRV in patients with PHN and its correlation with pain…

[Sialadenosis of the parotid gland. Ultrastructural, clinical and experimental findings in disturbances of secretion (author's transl)].

Among the secretory disturbances ("Dyschylien") of salivary glands the sialadenosis of the parotid gland is a clinic and a morphologic definited entity. The typical clinical symptom is a bilateral, often recurrent, and painless swelling of the parotid gland. The characteristic pathological findings consist in an acinar cell hypertrophy without any inflammatory signs. According to this definition, sialadenosis has to be separated from those diseases of salivary glands, which are primarily altered by inflammation of the salivary tissue with secondary secretory disturbances. From flinical point o

Gastrointestinal symptoms and cardiac vagal tone in type 1 diabetes correlates with gut transit times and motility index.

BACKGROUND: Although gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common in diabetes, they frequently do not correlate with measurable sensorimotor abnormalities. The wireless motility capsule (WMC) measures pressure, temperature, and pH as it traverses the GI tract wherefrom transit times and motility indices are derived. The aim was to investigate whether GI symptoms correlate with changes in (a) segmental transit times, (b) segmental motility index, (c) cardiac vagal tone, or (d) presence/absence of peripheral neuropathy in type 1 diabetes. METHODS: Gastrointestinal symptoms in 104 participants with

[Pupillary disorders - diagnosis, diseases, consequences].

Examination of the pupil offers an objective evaluation of visual function as well as the vegetative pathways to the eye. Essential information is gathered within a short time. This makes pupillary inspection a valuable part of the routine ophthalmological, neurological and general medical examinations. Due to the proximity of pupillary pathways to various anatomic structures, pupillary dysfunction can be caused by a variety of disorders, some of which may be life threatening. The ophthalmologist plays a key role in detecting pupillary disorders and in directing further investigations. Therefo

The ion channel ASIC2 is required for baroreceptor and autonomic control of the circulation.

Arterial baroreceptors provide a neural sensory input that reflexly regulates the autonomic drive of circulation. Our goal was to test the hypothesis that a member of the acid-sensing ion channel (ASIC) subfamily of the DEG/ENaC superfamily is an important determinant of the arterial baroreceptor reflex. We found that aortic baroreceptor neurons in the nodose ganglia and their terminals express ASIC2. Conscious ASIC2 null mice developed hypertension, had exaggerated sympathetic and depressed parasympathetic control of the circulation, and a decreased gain of the baroreflex, all indicative of a

Olfactory stimulation with scent of essential oil of grapefruit affects autonomic neurotransmission and blood pressure.

Previously, we observed that olfactory stimulation with scent of grapefruit oil (SGFO) enhances sympathetic nerve activities and suppresses gastric vagal (parasympathetic) nerve activity (GVNA), increases plasma glycerol concentration and body temperature, and decreases appetite in rats. Here, we show that olfactory stimulation with SGFO for 10 min elevates renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and blood pressure (BP) and lowers GVNA in urethane-anesthetized rats. Olfactory stimulation with limonene, a major component of grapefruit oil, also elicited increases in RSNA and BP in urethane-anes

The influence of local active warming on pain relief of patients with cholelithiasis during rescue transport.

UNLABELLED: Upper abdominal pain, a frequent symptom of the presence of gallstone disease, is the cause of 6% of the emergency calls of the Austrian emergency system. Pain resulting from cholelithiasis is characteristically severe. Recent data show that active warming during emergency transport of trauma victims is effective in reducing pain. Therefore, we hypothesized that local active warming of the abdomen would be an effective pain treatment for patients with acute cholelithiasis and could be provided by paramedics. Sixty patients (>19 yr) consented to participate in this study. They were

Vagus nerve stimulation in rheumatic diseases: linking autonomic nervous system regulation, inflammation, and clinical outcomes.

Patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases most often exhibit sympathetic overactivity and dominance at the expense of the parasympathetic system, including the vagus nerve. It leads to dysfunction of the negative feedback mechanism within the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, resulting in impaired regulation of cortisol levels, stress responses, and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, vagal dysfunction affects the mechanism by which acetylcholine binds to α7 nicotinic receptors on macrophage surfaces, thereby inhibiting the release of TNF-α and other pro-inflammatory cytokines

Sex-Specific Differences in the Pathophysiology of Hypertension.

Hypertension is one of the most common comorbidities in cardiometabolic diseases, affecting nearly one third of adults. As a result, its pathophysiological mechanisms have been studied extensively and are focused around pressure natriuresis, the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), the sympathetic nervous system, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction. Additionally, hypertension secondary to other underlying etiologies also exists. While clinical evidence has clearly shown differences in hypertension development in males and females, relatively little is known about the pathophysiological me…

Autonomic Function Recovery and Physical Activity Levels in Post-COVID-19 Young Adults after Immunization: An Observational Follow-Up Case-Control Study.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has detrimental multi-system consequences. Symptoms may appear during the acute phase of infection, but the literature on long-term recovery of young adults after mild to moderate infection is lacking. Heart rate variability (HRV) allows for the observation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulation post-SARS-CoV-2 infection. Since physical activity (PA) can help improve ANS modulation, investigating factors that can influence HRV outcomes after COVID-19 is essential to advancements in care and intervention strategies. Clinicians may use this research to a

Effect of exercise training on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system: a meta-analysis.

Blood pressure (BP) management reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) plays an im … R (MD -3.0 bpm; 95% CI -6.0, 0.4; p = 0.053). Exercise training may reduce some aspects of RAAS and sympathetic nervous system activity, and this explains some of the anti-hypertensive response.
