We performed functional imaging with a conventional 1.5-T magnetic resonance scanner in 9 normal subjects. We used a gradient-echo technique to examine changes in signal between periods when subjects viewed a stationary black-and-white grating, a moving grating, and when they followed a moving spot. We located image pixels with significant differences between the viewing conditions. We report linear calcifications along the trajectories of previously implanted depth electrodes in 2 patients. A 20-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman with medically intractable complex partial seizures (CPS), underwent bilateral frontal and mesiotemporal depth electrode implantation as part of their epilepsy surgery workup. A patient is presented who developed prosopagnosia with a recent occipitotemporal infarct in the distribution of the right posterior cerebral artery. Quinolinic acid (QA) content was measured in postmortem frontal and temporal cortex, putamen and cerebellum obtained from patients with senile dementia of Alzheimer type (SDAT), Huntington's disease (HD) and controls, using a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method. There were no significant group differences in QA content of any of the regions examined. The data do not support the hypothesis that an accumulation of QA plays a role in neuronal degeneration occurring in the frontal and temporal cortex, putamen and cerebellum of patients with SDAT.

Two cases of paraplegia caused by head injuries sustained in recent military conflicts are presented. The underlying pathological disturbances could be related to the CT scan appearances and are discussed in the light of previously reported series. Both cases were remarkable for an early and prolonged paraplegia which was flaccid, rather than spastic, and for the sensory impairment produced.

Normal tissue toxicity resulting from both disease and treatment is an adverse side effect in the management of patients with central nervous system malignancies.
