A 5-year-old child presented with headache and blindness. Clinically she had blindness and bilateral optic atrophy. Computed tomography scanning of the head revealed multiple enhancing cysticercus cysts in the brain. She recovered from her blindness completely and lesions on the computed tomography scan either disappeared or diminished in size after 3 months of praziquantel therapy.

Acute zonal occult outer retinopathy (AZOOR) diagnosis is challenging and frequently delayed. Atypical findings were described, nevertheless optic disc edema has not been consistently reported. In this study we pretend to describe a challenging diagnosis of AZOOR. In our case, a 19-year-old female presented painless vision loss in her right eye for 2 weeks. Fundus examination revealed optic disc hyperaemic edema and the visual field (VF) an enlarged blind spot. Non-infectious optic neuritis was assumed and intravenous corticotherapy administered. Four months later, VA had improved, but a VF de

Macular schisis is the splitting of the inner retinal layers at macula, with or without associated detachment. The acquired form of macular schisis is frequently associated with optic disc pit maculopathy, although it could be accompanied by several conditions such as tractional maculopathies, cystoid macular edema, veno-occlusive disease, and shaken baby syndrome. However, a small number of cases of retinoschisis without optic disc pit have been reported elsewhere. Here, we present a patient with acquired macular schisis without high myopia and optic disc abnormality in funduscopic examinatio

PURPOSE: To describe a case of epiretinal membrane (ERM) regression after optic nerve atrophy.
METHODS: Retrospective case report.
RESULTS: A 56-year-old man with progressive visual impairment was found to have an ERM with associated retinal thickening and distortion (documented with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography [OCT]). In addition, we noted a slight unilateral paleness of the optic nerve. The patient denied any further diagnostic investigation and presented himself again 2 years after the initial presentation. A new OCT examination at this point revealed a remarkable regress

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory disease associated with optic neuritis and myelitis. Recently, several studies showed that optical coherence tomography (OCT) could be an interesting method for the evaluation of disease severity; however, to date there are no studies with a longitudinal follow-up of visual function in NMO. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of OCT to evaluate the progression of visual dysfunction in NMO.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A group of 30 NMO patients (thus, 60 eyes), comprised of 20 women and 10 men with a mean age of 43.7 +/- 12.3 year

The fundus photographs provided show deep yellowish lesions, multifocal exudative retinal detachments, and optic disc hyperemia in both eyes. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography scans shown demonstrate bilateral exudative retinal detachments involving the macula in the right eye. The exudative retinal detachment is characterized by the presence of subretinal fibrin and septa. The B-scan ultrasonography provided shows low- to medium-reflective choroidal thickening predominating around optic nerve head, in association with exudative retinal detachment in the right eye. All these finding

A twelve-year old girl presented herself for a routine ophthalmologic examination in our clinic. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 1.0 on both eyes. On funduscopic examination we saw a yellow round structure inferior to the optic nerve head. In optical coherence tomography (OCT) examination the structure showed cupping and opening of the Bruch membrane and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Visual field testing revealed an absolute scotoma right in the area were the abnormal coloboma was localized. We diagnosed a pseudo-doubling of the optic disk, which is a rare condition with just a few

The authors report using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) to observe a patient with an optic nerve pit and macular schisis-like spaces. An 8-microm axial resolution prototype spectral domain OCT and stereo fundus photography were used to observe the patient. A macular schisis-like cavity was present at baseline and additional cystic changes developed in the nerve fiber layer over a period of 16 months; however, the visual acuity remained stable at 20/20. Spectral domain OCT provides greater detail of the changes in morphology and structure of macular schisis and edema associa

Optic disc drusen are an important differential diagnosis in the diagnostic evaluation of a prominent optic nerve head. Drusen of the optic disc occur in 0.34 to 2.4 % of human individuals and manifest themselves bilaterally in three of four cases. Drusen are found six times more often within histological sections than on funduscopic examination. It is known that optic disc drusen can occur in familial clusters without any other pathological ophthalmic findings. They can also be associated with retinitis pigmentosa, or with the Joubert or Alagille syndromes. Non-invasive diagnostic tools inclu

Actinic keratosis represents the earliest manifestation of non-melanoma skin cancer. Because of their risk of progression to invasive squamous cell carcinoma, an earlier diagnosis and treatment are mandatory. Their diagnosis sometimes could represent a challenge even for expert dermatologists. Dermoscopy, confocal laser microscopy and optical coherence tomography could help clinicians in diagnosis.

A comprehensive image catalog from an in vitro investigation of teeth with occlusal carious lesions is provided. The aim was to visualize carious lesions using various imaging techniques in order to present different stages of caries progression and to provide reference data for the development and validation of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) as a non-ionizing diagnostic method for dental caries. The study covers a variety of approaches, bridging the gap from basic histopathological analysis of thin sections to future optical imaging of occlusal carious lesions in
