A 47-year-old female was admitted to our hospital complaining of macrohematuria. The patient had a history of von Recklinghausen's disease. Her skin showed multiple cafe-au-lait spots and neurofibromatosis. Thorough examinations were done. Urine cytology was positive. Intravenous pyelography and cystography demonstrated an irregular wall of the bladder. A computerized tomographic scan demonstrated a 7 cm nodular mass. Cystoscopy revealed a papillary tumor on the right lateral and anterior wall of the bladder. She was diagnosed as having a bladder tumor in von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis

OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential value of ectopic beta-human chorionic gonadotrophin (beta HCG) measurement in the clinical management of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective serological study of 163 consecutive patients undergoing cystoscopy as new or review cases was performed to assess any correlation between beta HCG production and histological grading or stage.
RESULTS: Ten per cent of patients with TCC had a raised beta HCG level but there was no correlation with tumour differentiation, staging or prognosis.

Fourteen patients with adenocarcinoma of the bladder have been seen over a 14-year period; 6 tumours were of urachal origin and the remaining 8 were primary. All tumours were muscle-infiltrating. We report a new technique for the management of the complications of vesicorectal fistulas. The patient we present had a fistula and severe skin excoriation. The fistula was caused by carcinoma of the prostate that had been treated by radiation therapy. The fistula was patched with a rectal prosthesis similar to that used to patch esophageal-tracheal and esophageal-bronchial fistulas.

Urologic complications arose in 23.7 per cent of 569 patients who underwent abdominoperineal or low anterior resection for anorectal cancer. No radomization of the two operations was attempted, low anterior resection being performed whenever resection 5 cm below the tumor was possible. We compared the progression patterns after radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) and elective distal ureterectomy (DU) in patients with urothelial carcinoma of the distal ureter.
