"I am going to groom you": Multiple forms of play fighting in gray mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus).

Play fighting is a commonly reported form of play that involves competitive interactions that generally do not escalate to serious fighting. Although in many species what are competed over are the body targets that are bitten or struck in serious fighting, for many others, the competition can be over other forms of contact, such as sex, social grooming, and predation. In primates, the most detailed studies have been of species such as Old World monkeys, that engage in play fighting that simulates serious fighting, but reports of a number of others, especially among nocturnal prosimians, have n

Use of Emergency Department Data to Monitor and Respond to an Increase in Opioid Overdoses in New Hampshire, 2011-2015.

OBJECTIVES: Opioid-related overdoses and deaths in New Hampshire have increased substantially in recent years, similar to increases observed across the United States. We queried emergency department (ED) data in New Hampshire to monitor opioid-related ED encounters as part of the public health response to this health problem. METHODS: We obtained data on opioid-related ED encounters for the period January 1, 2011, through December 31, 2015, from New Hampshire's syndromic surveillance ED data system by querying for (1) chief complaint text related to the words "fentanyl," "heroin," "opiate," a

Rates and Correlates of Binge Drinking Among College Students With Disabilities, United States, 2013.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to provide the first comprehensive picture of alcohol use and binge drinking by US college students with disabilities (SWDs), who represent at least 11% (1.6 million) of the US college student population. METHODS: In fall 2013, we used a stratified random sampling technique to identify and recruit 2440 SWDs from 122 US colleges and universities. A total of 1285 (53%) SWDs from 61 (50%) colleges and universities completed a survey of alcohol and other drug use and the use of substances by student peers. We conducted 4 multiple logistic regression analyses to compar

Excess Clinical Comorbidity Among HIV-Infected Patients Accessing Primary Care in US Community Health Centers.

OBJECTIVES: As the life expectancy of people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has increased, the spectrum of illness has evolved. We evaluated whether people living with HIV accessing primary care in US community health centers had higher morbidity compared with HIV-uninfected patients receiving care at the same sites. METHODS: We compared data from electronic health records for 12 837 HIV-infected and 227 012 HIV-uninfected patients to evaluate the relative prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, dyslipidemia, and malignancies by HIV s

Sociodemographic and Clinical Risk Factors Associated With Tuberculosis Mortality in the United States, 2009-2013.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of our study were (1) to determine risk factors associated with tuberculosis (TB)-specific and non-TB-specific mortality among patients with TB and (2) to examine whether risk factors for TB-specific mortality differed from those for non-TB-specific mortality. METHODS: We obtained data from the National Tuberculosis Surveillance System and included all patients who had TB between 2009 and 2013 in the United States and its territories. We used multinomial logistic regression analysis to determine the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of each risk factor for TB-specific and n

Delayed and Unreported Drug-Susceptibility Testing Results in the US National Tuberculosis Surveillance System, 1993-2014.

OBJECTIVES: Drug-susceptibility testing (DST) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is necessary for identifying drug-resistant tuberculosis, administering effective treatment regimens, and preventing the spread of drug-resistant tuberculosis. DST is recommended for all culture-confirmed cases of tuberculosis. We examined trends in delayed and unreported DST results in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Tuberculosis Surveillance System. METHODS: We analyzed culture-confirmed tuberculosis cases reported to the National Tuberculosis Surveillance System during 1993-2014 for annual

Economic Disparities and Syphilis Incidence in Massachusetts, 2001-2013.

OBJECTIVES: We used area-level indicators of poverty to describe economic disparities in the incidence rate of infectious syphilis in Massachusetts to (1) determine whether methods developed in earlier AIDS analyses in Massachusetts could be applied to syphilis and (2) characterize syphilis trends during a time of increased rates of syphilis incidence. METHODS: Using census tract data and population counts from the US Census Bureau and Massachusetts data on syphilis, we analyzed the incidence rate of syphilis infection from 2001 to 2013 by the poverty level of the census tract in which people

A Large Community Outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease Associated With a Cooling Tower in New York City, 2015.

OBJECTIVES: Infections caused by Legionella are the leading cause of waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States. We investigated a large outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in New York City in summer 2015 to characterize patients, risk factors for mortality, and environmental exposures. METHODS: We defined cases as patients with pneumonia and laboratory evidence of Legionella infection from July 2 through August 3, 2015, and with a history of residing in or visiting 1 of several South Bronx neighborhoods of New York City. We describe the epidemiologic, environmental, and laboratory inves

Advancing the Use of Emergency Department Syndromic Surveillance Data, New York City, 2012-2016.

INTRODUCTION: The use of syndromic surveillance has expanded from its initial purpose of bioterrorism detection. We present 6 use cases from New York City that demonstrate the value of syndromic surveillance for public health response and decision making across a broad range of health outcomes: synthetic cannabinoid drug use, heat-related illness, suspected meningococcal disease, medical needs after severe weather, asthma exacerbation after a building collapse, and Ebola-like illness in travelers returning from West Africa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The New York City syndromic surveillance syste

HIV Testing Among Men at Risk for Acquiring HIV Infection Before and After the 2006 CDC Recommendations.

OBJECTIVES: Testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the key first step in HIV treatment and prevention. In 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended annual HIV testing for people at high risk for HIV infection. We evaluated HIV testing among men with high-risk heterosexual (HRH) contact and sexually active men who have sex with men (MSM) before and after the CDC recommendations. METHODS: We used data from the National Survey of Family Growth, 2002 and 2006-2010, to assess proportions of HRH respondents and MSM reporting HIV testing in the prior 12 months

Increasing Hepatitis B Testing and Linkage to Care of Foreign-Born Asians, Sacramento, California, 2012-2013.

OBJECTIVE: Without medical intervention, about one-quarter of the 1.4-2.2 million Americans chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) will die of HBV-associated conditions, including liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. We report on a program in Sacramento County, California, that offered HBV screening to at-risk adults, referred infected individuals to care, and vaccinated uninfected adults who were susceptible to HBV infection (i.e., individuals who tested negative for hepatitis B surface antigen and who were never vaccinated against HBV). METHODS: We engaged organization

Sharing Overdose Data Across State Agencies to Inform Public Health Strategies: A Case Study.

Data sharing and analysis are important components of coordinated and cost-effective public health strategies. However, legal and policy barriers have made data from different agencies difficult to share and analyze for policy development. To address a rise in overdose deaths, Maryland used an innovative and focused approach to bring together data on overdose decedents across multiple agencies. The effort was focused on developing discrete intervention points based on information yielded on decedents' lives, such as vulnerability upon release from incarceration. Key aspects of this approach in

Homelessness, Unsheltered Status, and Risk Factors for Mortality: Findings From the 100    000 Homes Campaign.

OBJECTIVES: People who live in unsheltered situations, such as the streets, often have poorer health, less access to health care, and an increased risk of premature mortality as compared with their sheltered counterparts. The objectives of this study were to (1) compare the characteristics of people experiencing homelessness who were sleeping primarily in unsheltered situations with those who were accessing homeless shelters and other sheltered situations, (2) identify correlates of unsheltered status, and (3) assess the relationship between unsheltered status and increased risk of mortality.

Non-nutritive, thermotactile cues induce odor preference in infant mice (Mus musculus).

Mouse pups (Mus musculus) placed on the midline of a mesh floor suspended over an empty area bounded by 2 odor fields, 1 containing homecage bedding and the other clean bedding, preferentially selected the homecage area when tested on postnatal day (PD) 5, 10, or 12. PD5 pups given a choice of homecage bedding versus age-matched bedding from another litter showed no discrimination, whereas PD10/12 pups preferred own home odors. To test whether such home orientation can be shaped by experience, pups were placed for 2 hrs on PDs 8 and 9 with either a lactating dam, a nonlactating foster dam or a

Performance of Self-Report to Establish Cancer Diagnoses in Disaster Responders and Survivors, World Trade Center Health Registry, New York, 2001-2007.

OBJECTIVE: Large-scale disasters may disrupt health surveillance systems, depriving health officials and researchers of timely and accurate information needed to assess disaster-related health effects and leading to use of less reliable self-reports of health outcomes. In particular, ascertainment of cancer in a population is ordinarily obtained through linkage of self-reported data with regional cancer registries, but exclusive reliance on these sources following a disaster may result in lengthy delays or loss of critical data. To assess the impact of such reliance, we validated self-reported

Continuum of Care Among People Living with Perinatally Acquired HIV Infection in New York City, 2014.

OBJECTIVE: The HIV care continuum outlines the steps from HIV infection to diagnosis, linkage to care, and viral suppression among people living with HIV. We examined data for steps along the HIV care continuum among people living with perinatally acquired infection in New York City using surveillance data. METHODS: This study included data for people who acquired HIV infection perinatally and lived in New York City as of December 31, 2014. We defined "in care" as having ≥1 CD4 or viral load test in 2014, "in continuous care" as having ≥2 CD4 or viral load tests ≥3 months apart in 2014, and "

Female-directed violence as a form of sexual coercion in humans (Homo sapiens).

Male-perpetrated female-directed violence (FDV) may be associated with greater sexual access to a female. Accordingly, FDV is expected to be associated with greater copulation frequency. Research on nonhuman primates affirms this hypothesis, but no previous research has investigated this relationship in humans (Homo sapiens). The current research tests the hypothesis that FDV is associated with in-pair copulation frequency and, thus, may function as a form of sexual coercion. It was predicted that men who perpetrate FDV will secure more in-pair copulations than men who do not perpetrate violen

Assessment of Administrative Medical Claims Data for Public Health Surveillance of Invasive Group A Streptococcal Necrotizing Fasciitis in Tennessee.

OBJECTIVE: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe manifestation of invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infection. NF is a rapidly progressive infection of the subcutaneous tissues, including the fascia, and accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment are critical. Population-based surveillance is conducted for iGAS, including the severe manifestations of NF, by the federally funded Active Bacterial Core surveillance (ABCs) program. METHODS: We used administrative claims data from a large managed care organization in Tennessee to enhance the public health surveillance for NF iGAS. For the period
