Preoperative anxiety and pain in children and adolescents are associated with postoperative complications. Despite relevant non-pharmacological treatment, the addition of premedical treatment may be needed. Traditionally, oral midazolam has been a favourite premedical treatment. However, several alternatives are available. Additionally, simultaneous administration of the medications to achieve synergy may be advantable. The choice of premedical treatment and method of administration depends on the individual child, the situation, and the preferences of the medical staff.

The effect of oral administration of a 50% ethanol extract of Silene aprica (SA) on acute liver injury was examined in rats intoxicated with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and acetaminophen. The results indicated that SA protected the liver from CCl4- and acetaminophen-induced injury as judged by morphological and biochemical observations. An increase in both lipid peroxidation (LPO) and triglyceride concentrations occurred in the liver with CCl4 injection, SA administration significantly reduced these changes.

Calves that have diarrhea frequently develop dehydration, strong ion acidosis, and electrolyte abnormalities, and are in a state of negative energy balance. Oral electrolyte therapy is a simple and economical method of addressing all of these potential complications. Treatment of hypertension with enalapril in a preterm infant is described. Enalapril is a new converting enzyme blocker with a longer plasma half-life and less side effects than captopril. Oral administration of enalapril 0.1 mg/kg caused severe hypotension and renal failure in a preterm infant. We recommend an oral starting dose of 0.01 mg/kg in preterm infants and extremely close monitoring of infants receiving the first dose of enalapril.

This paper reports a case of agranulocytosis that developed in a patient with hyperthyroidism two months after the administration of methimazole. The patient manifested symptoms of fever, sore throat, profound leukopenia, and oral complications such as generalized gingival necrosis and mucosa ulceration, which subsequently abated upon withdrawal of the drug. Dental practitioners should be aware of the potential of agranulocytosis associated with methimazole therapy. The oral manifestations should be kept in mind.
