Adaptive terminal sliding mode control of ankle movement using functional electrical stimulation of agonist-antagonist muscles.

This paper presents a robust control strategy which is based on synergistic combination of an adaptive controller with terminal sliding mode control (TSMC) for online control of ankle movement using functional electrical stimulation (FES) of dorsiflexor and plantar flexor muscles in paraplegic subjects. The major advantage of TSMC derives from the property of robustness to system uncertainties and external disturbances with fast convergence without imposing strong control force. To implement TSMC, a model of neuromusculoskeletal system should be presented in standard canonical form. In this wo…

Ankle-joint mobility and standing squat posture in elite junior cross-country skiers. A pilot study.

AIM: Skating technique in cross-country skiing is a complex multi-joint movement with kinematics comparable to those of the standing squat exercise where any restricted joint mobility in the lower extremity-chain may change the movement pattern. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of ankle mobility on trunk posture during squat exercise in cross-country skiers. METHODS: Seven elite junior cross-country skiers (age range 17-19 years) performed two different standing squats, one with hands on hips and one with arms extended above the head. The squats were recorded on video…

Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity predicts silent cerebrovascular diseases in patients with end-stage renal diseases.

AIM: Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is a major determinant of the prognosis in end-stage renal diseases (ESRD). The purpose of this study was to examine whether factors associated with arterial stiffness contributed to the development of CVD in patients with ESRD. METHODS: CVD (lacunes and carotid/intracranial artery stenosis) was evaluated with brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and carotid/intracranial artery magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in 44 pre-dialytic patients. The severity of CVD was evaluated by the number of lacunes and the degree of stenosis, respectively. The associati

Shoes influence lower limb muscle activity and may predispose the wearer to lateral ankle ligament injury.

Lateral ankle ligaments are injured by hyperinversion of the foot. Foot position is controlled by the lower limb muscles. Awareness of foot position is impaired by wearing shoes. We aimed to determine the influence of wearing shoes upon muscle activity. Sixty-two healthy subjects underwent the same measurements, barefoot and with standardized shoes in a random order. Electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the peroneus longus muscle in response to sudden and unanticipated inversion of the ipsilateral foot. Following foot inversion, the EMG signal showed an initial peak muscle contraction foll…

Do voluntary strength, proprioception, range of motion, or postural sway predict occurrence of lateral ankle sprain?

Prevention of ankle sprain, the most common sporting injury, is only possible once risk factors have been identified. Voluntary strength, proprioception, postural sway, and range of motion are possible risk factors. A systematic review was carried out to investigate these possibilities. Eligible studies were those with longitudinal design investigating ankle sprain in subjects aged > or = 15 years. The studies had to have measured range of motion, voluntary strength, proprioception, or postural sway before monitoring incidence of lateral ankle sprain. Dorsiflexion range strongly predicted risk…

Health-related quality of life following operative treatment of unstable ankle fractures: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Although Weber type B ankle fractures are often considered benign with a good prognosis, evidence from observational studies suggests that 17% to 24% of such patients may have less satisfactory outcomes. Although the explanation for variability in outcomes remains unclear, previous studies of other surgical procedures have suggested nonsurgery-related causes account for much of the variability in outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational cohort study to evaluate health-related quality of life in 30 patients with unstable ankle fractures who were otherwise healthy…
