Two llama calves died 3 days after inoculation with anthrax vaccine. Concurrent administration of ivermectin and other biologics may have enhanced the infectivity of the Sterne strain vaccine of Bacillus anthracis. This experience suggests that the Sterne strain of anthrax vaccine can induce fatal disease when given to young llamas and should be used only with extreme care and in face of strong "at risk" situations.

Whipple's disease (WD) is an uncommon multisystem condition caused by the bacillus Tropheryma whipplei. Central nervous system involvement is a classical feature of the disease observed in 20 to 40% of the patients. We report the case of a 62 year old man with WD that developed neurological manifestations during its course, and discuss the most usual signs and symptoms focusing on recent diagnostic criteria and novel treatment regimens.

AN UPDATE ON CAT SCRATCH DISEASE: Cat scratch disease is an uncommon and infectious disease of man characterized by regional lymphadenopathy following a scratch or a bite from a cat or other inoculation wounds. The role of the cat in the transmission of the disease is uncertain. This paper describes the disease, reviews different hypotheses on the etiology taking into account the recently reported discovery of a cat scratch disease bacillus and summarizes the diagnostic criteria.

In a single-center Italian study (2016-2023), we analyzed all children and young people (n = 53) with tuberculosis. All were born to foreign-born parents. Those born in Italy were younger and mainly had pulmonary tuberculosis, whereas those born abroad were more frequently malnourished and vaccinated with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin. These findings highlight the need for targeted screening, nutrition support, and vaccination strategies.

Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is a standard therapy for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer used in urology clinics and inpatient settings. We present a review of infection risks to patients receiving intravesical BCG, healthcare personnel who prepare and administer BCG, and other patients treated in facilities where BCG is prepared and administered. Knowledge of these risks and relevant regulations informs appropriate infection prevention measures.

Melioidosis is an emerging disease caused by the environmental Gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia pseudomallei. Melioidosis has been reported to be endemic mainly in northern Australia and Southeast Asia. Here, we report the first two cases of melioidosis on the Comorian island of Mayotte. We also describe four cases that occurred over a short period of time in patients who had traveled between Mayotte, Madagascar, and Reunion Island.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S.M.) is a Gram-negative bacillus, naturally resistant to cephalosporins and carbapenems, which can colonize different sites and may be responsible for serious infections for which treatment is a real challenge. This was rarely reported as cutaneous pathogenic organism causing cellulitis-like lesions, paronychia, mucocutaneous ulcers and ecthyma gangrenosum in immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of non-healing legs ulcer infected with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

Connecticut established telephone-based gram-positive rod (GPR) reporting primarily to detect inhalational anthrax cases more quickly. From March to December 2003, annualized incidence of blood isolates was 21.3/100,000 persons; reports included 293 Corynebacterium spp., 193 Bacillus spp., 73 Clostridium spp., 26 Lactobacillus spp., and 49 other genera. Around-the-clock GPR reporting has described GPR epidemiology and enhanced rapid communication with clinical laboratories.

Disseminated mycobacterial infection after bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination is a very rare disorder, occurring mostly in patients with immunologic deficiency. We report a case of disseminated BCG infection in a 16-month-old girl with severe combined immunodeficiency. Plain radiographs showed multiple osteolytic lesions in the femora, tibiae, humerus, and phalanges. Abdominal sonography and CT scanning revealed multiple nodules in the spleen, and portocaval lymphadenopathy.

An infant with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is described, who presented with severe anaemia and hepatosplenomegaly due to disseminated Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) infection involving the bone marrow, liver and spleen. After BMT, huge splenic enlargement occurred, presumably due to proliferation of engrafted donor lymphocytes, leading to severe hypersplenism. Peripheral blood cell consumption was resolved by splenectomy, but gradual loss of the marrow graft followed.

We report the case of a 15 year-old boy, presenting with juxta-articular swellings and lacunar skeletal lesions associated with prolonged fever and cachexia. Among the multiple bacteriological samplings, only the trans-osseous puncture of a tibial lacunar lesions, yielded Bacillus tuberculosis. With triple anti-tuberculous chemotherapy, fever and juxta-articular swellings disappeared. However, several articular ankyloses persist, which might need a surgical correction.

Devastating complications include Charcot neuroarthropathy and insensate hands and feet. This work presents investigations of biologically active metabolites of Usnea barbata lichen. Extraction conditions for usnic acid and other biologically active phytocomponents using various solvent systems were chosen. Modern analytical techniques were used to study composition of the obtained extracts; usnic acid and phenolic compound contents were estimated. Antioxidant activity and antimicrobial properties of lichen dry extract against bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens were studied.

Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is used in patients with urinary bladder carcinoma. Although it is generally well tolerated, granulomatous hepatitis is a rare but serious complication. We report a 42-year-old man and a 56-year-old man who developed granulomatous hepatitis following intravesical BCG. One of them was treated successfully with antitubercular therapy; the other died because of BCG sepsis and multi-organ failure.

Durian (Durio zibethinus L.) is a high-value tropical fruit crop that has recently been cultivated on a commercial scale in Hainan Province, China.
