Function and homeostasis of copper and zinc in mammals.

Recently there has been great interest in the determination of levels of trace elements in biological systems. The goals of many researchers in this field have been: understanding the roles of micronutrients in biochemical processes and the evaluation of biological mechanisms that maintain tissue concentrations at relatively constants levels. The biochemical and physiological functions of the micronutrients copper and zinc have been reviewed with emphasis on factors, both endogenous and exogenous, associated with the maintenance of homeostatic levels in mammalian sera. Understanding the mechan

Akt/mTOR pathway-mediated CCNA1 regulation of radiotherapy resistance in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), as a cancer type highly sensitive to radiotherapy, has radiation therapy as the preferred clinical treatment strategy. However, acquired radioresistance poses a significant challenge to the overall therapeutic efficacy for NPC patients. METHODS: In this study, we established two radioresistant NPC cell lines, CNE2-IR and HONE1-IR. RESULTS: RNA sequencing analysis revealed that CCNA1 was upregulated in both radioresistant NPC cell lines. Downregulation of CCNA1 enhanced the radiosensitivity of these two radioresistant NPC cell lines. Further researc

Bright days, dark nights: translating science on the non-visual effects of light into public health guidance.

BACKGROUND: Light is a daily environmental exposure that can influence circadian timing, sleep, alertness, mood, and cognition, yet public health guidance still focuses mainly on optical-radiation hazards rather than healthy patterns of visible light and darkness. ANALYSIS: This policy brief translates recent evidence and expert consensus on the non-visual effects of ocular light exposure into public health guidance. The evidence supports a practical 24-h pattern: brighter light during the morning and daytime, lower light in the evening, and darkness or near-darkness during sleep. This princi

Intracranial mixed germ cell tumor mimicking a meningioma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Germ cell tumors have a low incidence in the Hispanic population and most frequently present in pineal or suprasellar regions. Only a few cases have been reported with an initial image compatible with a meningioma-like appearance. OBSERVATIONS: A 24-year-old male with photopsias, headache, and left homonymous hemianopia presented with a right parieto-occipital extra-axial mass. MRI revealed a heterogeneous enhancing mass, with hemorrhagic zones and surrounding vasogenic edema. Surgery with a near-total resection was performed and an extra-axial lesion with infiltration of the deep

A Case of Rapidly Progressive DEK::AFF2 Fusion-Associated Papillary Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: DEK::AFF2 fusion-associated carcinoma is a recently recognized subtype of nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma that may be underdiagnosed due to overlap with benign sinonasal lesions and reliance on molecular confirmation. METHODS: A 39-year-old woman at 29 weeks' gestation presented with progressive swelling of the left nasal ala. She had a prior resection of DEK::AFF2 carcinoma and was lost to follow-up. MRI demonstrated a 2.9-cm recurrent mass, and incisional biopsy confirmed recurrence. RESULTS: Given the historically described low- to intermediate-grade behavior of this t

Predictors of Delayed and Omitted Postoperative Radiotherapy After Laryngectomy for pT4 Laryngeal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) improves locoregional control and survival in high-risk head and neck cancer, and guidelines recommend initiation within 42 days of surgery. Timeliness after laryngectomy for pathologic T4 (pT4) laryngeal cancer is poorly characterized. METHODS: In a retrospective National Cancer Database cohort of adults with nonmetastatic pT4 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma undergoing total laryngectomy (2010-2022), multivariable logistic regression identified predictors of delayed (43-180 days post-operative receipt) and omitted PORT, and a 90-day landmark Co

Contouring and dose extraction of the maxilla, mandible and teeth on head and neck cancer radiotherapy planning scans.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite their vulnerability to radiation-induced damage, the maxilla and dentition are not routinely contoured in head and neck (HN) radiotherapy (RT), preventing accurate dose assessment and establishment of dose-effect relationships. This literature review aimed to: (1) identify published dentofacial contouring approaches, (2) synthesise current methods, and (3) where feasible, compare practices in paediatric and adult RT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE and Embase were searched for studies that contoured the maxilla, mandible, or teeth in HN RT. Reference lists were

National competition reveals common errors in target delineation among young clinicians in radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy's efficacy hinges on accurate tumor and organ delineation, a task currently dependent on manual methods prone to high variability and error. To address this, we organized a national targeting competition to identify and rectify common targeting errors among young clinicians. METHODS: An annual national competition in China was conducted for clinicians under 40, focusing on various cancer types. Participants submitted delineation work for anonymous expert review. The competition assessed integration of multimodal imaging and accuracy in delineation across differen

[A Case of Oligometastatic Recurrent Colorectal Liver Metastasis Effectively Treated with Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy].

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer liver metastasis(CRLM)is commonly managed with surgery or systemic chemotherapy. However, alternative treatments are needed for patients who are not candidates for these standard therapies. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has shown promising results in terms of local control. CASE: A 78-year-old woman underwent low anterior resection for rectal cancer(cStage Ⅲc)followed by 3 hepatic resections for metachronous CRLM. Upon the fourth recurrence, surgery was deemed infeasible due to advanced age, the location of recurrence, and surgical history. Additiona

Frequency and Risk Factors of Inappropriate Bladder Filling in Patients Irradiated for High-risk Prostate Cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Many patients with high-risk prostate cancer receive normo-fractionated irradiation. Previously, high-risk cancer and pre-treatment bladder volumes <200 ml were associated with inappropriate bladder filling during the radiotherapy course. A prospective trial will investigate the value of an app reminding patients to drink water before each radiotherapy session. This study provides information regarding magnitude of inappropriate bladder filling and risk factors required for the prospective trial. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 23 patients with high-risk prostate cancer and inappropr

Transient enhancement of chronic subdural hematomas: a clinical report of a mimic of acute intracranial hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of chronic subdural hematomas (cSDHs) is rising, leading to an increased reliance on imaging for diagnosis and management. CT imaging is commonly used in the evaluation of these patients, but transient enhancement of chronic subdural collections can mimic acute-on-chronic subdural hematomas, potentially leading to misdiagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To describe cases of transient enhancement of cSDHs after contrast administration. METHODS: A case series of three patients with pre-existing cSDHs was analyzed. One patient underwent middle meningeal artery embolization (MME), and

Full-course NIR-II imaging-navigated fractionated photodynamic therapy of bladder tumours with X-ray-activated nanotransducers.

The poor 5-year survival rate for bladder cancers is associated with the lack of efficient diagnostic and treatment techniques. Despite cystoscopy-assisted photomedicine and external radiation being promising modalities to supplement or replace surgery, they remain invasive or fail to provide real-time navigation. Here, we report non-invasive fractionated photodynamic therapy of bladder cancer with full-course real-time near-infrared-II imaging based on engineered X-ray-activated nanotransducers that contain lanthanide-doped nanoscintillators with concurrent emissions in visible and the second
