Brain region-specific neural activation by low-dose opioid promotes social behavior.

The opioid system plays crucial roles in modulating social behaviors in both humans and animals. However, the pharmacological profiles of opioids regarding social behavior and their therapeutic potential remain unclear. Multiple pharmacological, behavioral, and immunohistological c-Fos mapping approaches were used to characterize the effects of μ-opioid receptor agonists on social behavior and investigate the mechanisms in naive mice and autism spectrum disorder-like (ASD-like) mouse models, such as prenatally valproic acid-treated mice and Fmr1-KO mice. Here, we report that low-dose morphine,

Immunological Mechanisms of Sickness Behavior in Viral Infection.

Sickness behavior is the common denominator for a plethora of changes in normal behavioral routines and systemic metabolism during an infection. Typical symptoms include temperature, muscle weakness, and loss of appetite. Whereas we experience these changes as a pathology, in fact they are a carefully orchestrated response mediated by the immune system. Its purpose is to optimize immune cell functionality against pathogens whilst minimizing viral replication in infected cells. Sickness behavior is controlled at several levels, most notably by the central nervous system, but also by other organ

Orthorexic eating behavior in patients with somatoform disorders.

PURPOSE: Although anecdotal reports suggest a relation between orthorexic eating behavior and symptoms of somatoform disorders, this issue has not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to compare orthorexic eating behavior and other characteristics of disordered eating behavior in patients with somatoform disorders to a sample of healthy controls. METHODS: 31 patients with somatoform disorders and 30 matched controls completed eight questionnaires, i.a., the Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale, three scales of the Eating Disorder Inventory-2, Eating Attitudes Test-26, Multidimensional Inve

Animal models of female sexual dysfunction: basic considerations on drugs, arousal, motivation and behavior.

Female sexual dysfunctions are a heterogeneous group of symptoms with unknown but probably varying etiology. Social factors may contribute both to the prevalence and to the origin of these dysfunctions. The present review focuses on female hypoactive sexual desire disorder, sexual arousal disorder and orgasmic disorder. These disorders are generally the most common, according to epidemiological studies, and they can all be considered as disorders of motivation. An incentive motivational model of sexual behavior, applicable to humans as well as to non-human animals, is described and the dysfunc

Active Components in Internet-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Full Factorial Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Many studies have demonstrated that social anxiety disorder (SAD) can be effectively treated with psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), including internet-based CBT (ICBT). Despite evidence-based treatments, many individuals do not sufficiently benefit from them. Identifying the active components could help improve the effectiveness of SAD treatment. This study tested the effects of four treatment components (psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, attention training, and exposure) within ICBT for SAD to investigate its active components. METHODS: Thi

Pro- and Anti-Inflammatory Dietary Patterns and Lifestyle Factors Associated with Gastroesophageal Reflux Symptoms in Romanian Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common digestive disorder with a substantial impact on quality of life. Emerging evidence suggests that dietary patterns and lifestyle behaviors are associated with the occurrence and severity of GERD symptoms; however, integrated data from Romania remain limited. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate associations between pro- and anti-inflammatory dietary patterns, lifestyle-related behavioral factors, and the presence and severity of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms in an adult Romanian population. Methods: A national cross-s

Maternally administered interventions for preterm infants in the NICU: effects on maternal psychological distress and mother-infant relationship.

Although studies have examined the effects of interventions focused on preterm infants, few studies have examined the effects on maternal distress (anxiety, depressive symptoms, post-traumatic stress symptoms, parenting stress) or parenting. This study examined the effects of the auditory-tactile-visual-vestibular (ATVV) intervention and kangaroo care (KC) on maternal distress and the mother-infant relationship compared to an attention control group. 240 mothers from four hospitals were randomly assigned to the three groups. Maternal characteristics in the three groups were similar: 64.1% of A

Hierarchical Neurocognitive Model of Externalizing and Internalizing Comorbidity.

Mounting evidence suggests hierarchical psychopathology factors underlying psychiatric comorbidity. However, the exact neurobiological characterizations of these multilevel factors remain elusive. In this study, leveraging the brain-behavior predictive framework with a 10-year longitudinal imaging-genetic cohort (IMAGEN, ages 14, 19 and 23, N = 1,750), we constructed two neural factors underlying externalizing and internalizing symptoms, which were reproducible across six clinical and population-based datasets (ABCD, STRATIFY/ESTRA, ABIDE II, ADHD-200 and XiNan, from age 10 to age 36, N = 3,76

Avoidance in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder: Symptom phenomenology and clinical correlates.

Avoidance and family accommodation are common in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). While family accommodation has received considerable investigation, avoidance in pediatric OCD has been comparatively understudied. Despite this, avoidance can mask overall symptom severity, hinder accurate diagnosis, and impede treatment effectiveness. This study characterized avoidance behaviors and their clinical correlates in 101 treatment-seeking children and adolescents (54% male; ages 7 to 17) diagnosed with OCD. Avoidance was measured using the Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scal

Structural and functional neural patterns among sub-threshold bulimia nervosa: Abnormalities in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and orbitofrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Disordered eating behaviors are prevalent among youngsters and highly associated with dysfunction in neurocognitive systems. We aimed to identify the potential changes in individuals with bulimia symptoms (sub-BN) to generate insights to understand developmental pathophysiology of bulimia nervosa. METHODS: We investigated group differences in terms of degree centrality (DC) and gray matter volume (GMV) among 145 undergraduates with bulimia symptoms and 140 matched control undergraduates, with the secondary analysis of the whole brain connectivity in these regions of interest showi

Case report: Psychosis and catatonia in an adolescent patient with adipsic hypernatremia and autoantibodies against the subfornical organ.

This is the first description of a patient in which adipsic hypernatremia, a rare autoimmune encephalitis, presented in combination with complex psychiatric symptomatology, including psychosis and catatonia. Adipsic hypernatremia is characterized by autoantibodies against the thirst center of the brain. These autoantibodies cause inflammation and apoptosis in key regions of water homeostasis, leading to lack of thirst and highly increased serum sodium. To date, the symptoms of weakness, fatigue and drowsiness have been associated with adipsic hypernatremia, but no psychiatric symptomatology. H

Magnolin Inhibits Paclitaxel-Induced Cold Allodynia and ERK1/2 Activation in Mice.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common side effect of anti-cancer drugs. The main symptoms often include sensory disturbances and neuropathic pain, and currently there is no effective treatment for this condition. This study aimed to investigate the suppressive effects of magnolin, an extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) inhibitor substance derived from a 95% EtOH extract of the seeds of Magnolia denudata, on the symptoms of CIPN. A taxol-based anti-cancer drug paclitaxel (PTX) was repeatedly injected (2 mg/kg/day, total 8 mg/kg) into mice to induce CIPN. A neurop

Programmed symptoms: disparate effects united by purpose.

Central sensitivity syndromes (CSS) share features of similar multiple symptoms, virtually unknown mechanisms and lack of effective treatments. The CSS nomenclature was chosen over alternatives because it focused on a putative physiological mechanism of central sensitization common to disorders such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, vulvodynia and temporomandibular disorder. Increasing evidence from multiple biological systems suggests a further development. In this new model central sensitization is part of a ensemble that includes also the symptoms of widespread pain, fatigue, unref

Emotion dysregulation and adolescent psychopathology: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation deficits have been consistently linked to psychopathology in cross-sectional studies. However, the direction of the relationship between emotion regulation and psychopathology is unclear. This study examined the longitudinal and reciprocal relationships between emotion regulation deficits and psychopathology in adolescents. METHODS: Emotion dysregulation and symptomatology (depression, anxiety, aggressive behavior, and eating pathology) were assessed in a large, diverse sample of adolescents (N=1065) at two time points separated by seven months. Associations of observed callous-unemotional behaviors in early childhood with conduct problems and substance use over 14 years.

Callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors (i.e., low concern and active disregard for others) uniquely predict severe conduct problems and substance use when present by late childhood. Less is known about the predictive utility of CU behaviors displayed in early childhood, when morality is developing and interventions may be more effective. Children aged 4-7 years (N = 246; 47.6% girls) completed an observational task wherein they were encouraged to tear an experimenter's valued photograph, and blind raters coded children's displayed CU behaviors. During the next 14 years, children's conduct problems

Nociceptin/orphanin FQ receptor agonists increase aggressiveness in the mouse resident-intruder test.

Aggressive behaviors can be considered symptoms of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress, intermittent explosive, and personality disorders. Nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) is a peptide acting as endogenous ligand of the NOP receptor. Preclinical and clinical findings suggest the NOP receptor as an innovative target for the treatment of psychopathologies, such as anxiety, depression, and drug abuse. This study investigated the effects of NOP ligands and the behavioral phenotype of mice lacking the NOP receptor in an animal model of aggressiveness, the resident-intruder test. Mo

Longitudinal comparison of adaptive neuroplasticity in two rat models of unilateral vestibulopathy by dual-tracer [18F]FDG and [18F]UCB-H PET.

Animal models of acute unilateral vestibulopathy are well established for the study of adaptive lesion-induced neuroplasticity, because symptoms of acute vestibular asymmetry such as nystagmus and postural imbalance recover over time as central vestibular compensation mechanisms commence action. The purpose of this study was to compare these mechanisms in a postganglionic complete unilateral vestibular neurectomy model (UVN) vs. a preganglionic incomplete chemical unilateral labyrinthectomy model (cUL) using a longitudinal [18F]FDG/[18F]UCB-H dual tracer positron emission tomography (PET) appr

Multidimensional Social Interaction and School Refusal Tendency Among Elementary and Junior High School Students: A Three-Year Longitudinal Study with an Exploratory Indirect-Association Analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: School refusal tendency is an important school adaptation issue, but its upstream psychosocial correlates remain insufficiently understood. We examined whether baseline multidimensional social interaction was prospectively associated with later school refusal tendency and whether an exploratory statistical indirect association was observed through psychological and behavioral difficulties. METHODS: This three-year longitudinal observational study included 314 students in grades 5-9 aged ≥12 years at baseline in 2020 and followed through 2023. Social interaction was asse

Borderline personality disorder and other psychiatric, somatic, and behavioral conditions: a nationwide family study.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) often co-occurs with other health conditions, but the role of genetics vs. environment is unclear. In this multigenerational cohort study using Swedish national registers, the authors quantified the co-aggregation of BPD with other phenotypes in families and estimated the genetic vs. environmental contributions. In a birth cohort of individuals born 1973-2001 and their twins, siblings, cousins, parents, and aunts/uncles, the exposure was BPD in the proband. Odds ratios were estimated for 19 psychiatric, 18 somatic, and seven behavioral/injury outcome pheno
