WIKIBrainStem: An online atlas to manually segment the human brainstem at the mesoscopic scale from ultrahigh field MRI.

The brainstem is one of the most densely packed areas of the central nervous system in terms of gray, but also white, matter structures and, therefore, is a highly functional hub. It has mainly been studied by the means of histological techniques, which requires several hundreds of slices with a loss of the 3D coherence of the whole specimen. Access to the inner structure of the brainstem is possible using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), but this method has a limited spatial resolution and contrast in vivo. Here, we scanned an ex vivo specimen using an ultra-high field (11.7T) preclinical MR

Axonal Conduction Delay Shapes the Precision of the Spatial Hearing in A Spiking Neural Network Model of Auditory Brainstem.

One method by which the mammalian sound localization pathway localizes sound sources is by analyzing the microsecond-level difference between the arrival times of a sound at the two ears. However, how the neural circuits in the auditory brainstem precisely integrate signals from the two ears, and what the underlying mechanisms are, remains to be understood. Recent studies have reported that variations of axon myelination in the auditory brainstem produces various axonal conduction velocities and sophisticated temporal dynamics, which have not been well characterized in most existing models of

Experimental murine models of brainstem gliomas.

As an intractable central nervous system (CNS) tumor, brainstem glioma (BG) is one of the leading causes of pediatric death by brain tumors. Owing to the risk of surgical resection and the little improvement in survival time after radiotherapy and chemotherapy, there is an urgent need to find reliable model systems to better understand the regional pathogenesis of the brainstem and improve treatment strategies. In this review, we outline the evolution of BG murine models, and discuss both their advantages and limitations in drug discovery.

Glioma cells remotely promote erythropoiesis as a self-expanding strategy of cancer stem cells.

Cancer stem cells are a promising target for cancer eradication due to their responsibility for therapy-resistance and cancer recurrence. Previously, we have demonstrated that glioma stem cells (GSCs) recruit and induce the differentiation of bone marrow (BM) monocytes into tumor-infiltrating macrophages, which phagocytose hemorrhaged erythrocytes and store GSC-beneficial iron in mouse xenografts, suggesting a self-expanding strategy of GSCs that exploits host hematopoiesis of myeloid cells. However, it remains unclear whether a self-advantageous effect of GSCs also occurs on erythroid cells d

Brainstem trigeminal fiber microstructural abnormalities are associated with treatment response across subtypes of trigeminal neuralgia.

Neurosurgical treatments for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) can provide long-lasting pain relief; however, some patients fail to respond and undergo multiple, repeat procedures. Surgical outcomes can vary depending on the type of TN, but the reasons for this are not well understood. Neuroimaging studies of TN point to abnormalities in the brainstem trigeminal fibers; however, whether this is a common characteristic of treatment nonresponse across different subtypes of TN is unknown. Here, we used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to determine whether the brainstem trigeminal fiber microstructure is a

Biopsy in diffuse pontine gliomas: expert neurosurgeon opinion-a survey from the SIOPE brain tumor group.

INTRODUCTION: The prognosis of diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is poor. The role of biopsy in DIPG remains controversial since the diagnosis may be established with imaging alone. Recent advances in understanding molecular biology and targeting of brain tumors have created a renewed interest in biopsy for DIPG. The Neurosurgery Working Group (NWG) of the SIOP-Europe Brain Tumor Group (BTG) undertook a survey among international pediatric neurosurgeons to define their current perceptions and practice regarding DIPG biopsy. METHODS: The NWG developed a 20-question survey which was email

Kv3.1 and Kv3.3 subunits differentially contribute to Kv3 channels and action potential repolarization in principal neurons of the auditory brainstem.

KEY POINTS: Kv3.1 and Kv3.3 subunits are highly expressed in the auditory brainstem, with little or no mRNA for Kv3.2 or Kv3.4. Changes in Kv3 currents and action potential (AP) firing were analysed from wild-type, Kv3.1 and Kv3.3 knockout (KO) mice. Both Kv3.1 and Kv3.3 immunostaining was present and western blots confirmed loss of subunit protein in the respective KO. Medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) AP repolarization utilized Kv3.1 and/or Kv3.3; while in the lateral superior olive (LSO) Kv3.3 was essential. Voltage-gated calcium currents were unchanged between the genotypes. But

Using the Lateral Pontine Safe Entry Zone for Resection of Deep-Seated Cavernous Malformations in the Lateral Pons: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

The retrosigmoid approach is one of the main approaches used in the surgical management of pontine cavernous malformations. It definitely provides a lateral route to large central lesions but also makes possible resection of some ventral lesions as an alternative to the petrosal approaches. However, when these vascular malformations do not emerge on surface, one of the safe corridors delimited by the origin of the trigeminal nerve and the seventh-eight cranial nerve complex can be used.1-5  Baghai et al2 described the lateral pontine safe entry zone in 1982, as an alternative to approaches thr

Mapping the trigeminal root entry zone and its pontine fibre distribution patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, an additional trigeminothalamic tract - the dorsal trigeminothalamic tract - has been described in human brainstems by our group next to the known ventral trigeminothalamic tract. As various elements of the trigeminal system are known to be organised in a somatotopic fashion, the question arose whether the fibres within the trigeminal root show specific distributions patterns in their contribution to the ventral trigeminothalamic tract and dorsal trigeminothalamic tract specifically. METHODS: This study investigated the arrangement of the fibres in the trigeminal root

Rupture of suppurated liver hematoma into the anterior abdominal wall in a patient with Rendu-Osler-Weber syndrome.

We report a case of ruptured liver hematoma as a result of suppurated arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a patient with Rendu-Osler-Weber (ROW) syndrome. The patient presented with unexplained fever and upper right abdominal pain associated with microcytic anemia. A computed tomography scan revealed increasing subcapsular liver hematoma and features of liver abscess. Intraoperatively, a left liver hematoma mixed with pus was found that was attached to the anterior abdominal wall. Surgery included left lateral bisegmentectomy, while pathohistological analysis showed AVM and genetic tests confi
