Factors Affecting Quality of Life Among Spinal Cord Injury Patients in Korea.

PURPOSE: Complaints from spinal cord injury (SCI) patients are typically related to physical disability affecting activities of daily life. However, difficulties with voiding and defecation and/or sexual function can also be major concerns. The general population and even physicians are generally unaware of these complaints; therefore, this study focuses on surveying SCI patients regarding challenges that are faced in daily life. METHODS: A questionnaire was administered randomly and anonymously to SCI patients who visited the Korea Spinal Cord Injury Association and several rehabilitation ho

Low-back pain.

Low-back pain is one of the most common painful conditions experienced by humans throughout their life. Some occupational risk factors (namely, heavy manual material handling) may also contribute to the development of low-back pain: due to the high prevalence of both low-back pain and manual material handling in the adult working population, it has been estimated that low-back pain is probably the most common occupational disorder worldwide. Lifetime prevalence of low-back pain has been reported to be as high as 84%, depending on the case definition used, and no age group is spared, even child

Randomised trial of prophylactic early fresh-frozen plasma or gelatin or glucose in preterm babies: outcome at 2 years. Northern Neonatal Nursing Initiative Trial Group.

BACKGROUND: Preterm babies are at risk of haemorrhagic and ischaemic brain injury. One controlled trial suggested that prophylactic fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) may reduce that risk but did not clarify whether the reduction in periventricular haemorrhage seen on ultrasonography was due to a haemostatic effect or stabilisation of intravascular volume by FFP. We undertook a trial of 776 babies of gestational age at birth less than 32 weeks to look at the short-term and long-term outcome after early prophylactic FFP. METHODS: The defined primary trial outcome was survival without identifiable major

Growth variables and obstetrical risk factors in newborns are associated with psychomotor development at preschool age.

BACKGROUND: Low birthweight resulting from preterm birth or fetal growth restriction is associated with poor neurocognitive development and child psychopathology affecting school performance and educational success. Prediction of developmental performance may therefore serve as a basis for early intervention strategies to improve educational success and mental health of our children in a timely manner. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the predictive capacity of morphometric variables taken at birth and that of obstetrical risk factors to predict developmental performance at 4.3 (standar

Subplate neurons: potential targets for dysfunction after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

Hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) is a leading cause of long-term neurological disability in children, often resulting in motor deficits, cognitive impairments, and behavioral abnormalities. Effective curative interventions for hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) and its sequelae remain very limited. Recent research suggests that some disabilities are closely linked to the developmental disruption of neural circuits, characterized by aberrant thalamocortical projections, reduced network oscillatory activity, and loss of functional connectivity across brain regions. In this context, subplat

Diagnosis and Management of Children With Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multi-system autosomal dominant condition associated with disease-causing variants in either of the TSC1 or TSC2 genes. It can be associated with variable benign tumours (hamartomas) in different organs, most notably the brain, kidneys, skin and heart with different ages of onset. Affected children may have early-onset epilepsy, refractory epilepsy, varying degrees of developmental disability, ranging from normal cognition and learning difficulties to moderate-severe intellectual disability, neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health disorders. Multidi

A Case of Rafiq Syndrome (MAN1B1-CDG) in a Palestinian Child, With Brief Literature Review of 44 Cases.

Rafiq syndrome, MAN1B1-CDG, was described in 2010 and associated with genetic mutation in MAN1B1 gene in 2011. The disorder follows an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance and typically presents with specific facial dysmorphism, intellectual disability, developmental delay, obesity, and hypotonia. The syndrome belongs to a group of metabolic disorders called Congenital Glycosylation Disorders (CGD). In this study, we discuss a 5-year-old male from Palestine who presented with developmental delay, hypotonia, characteristic facial dysmorphisms, impulsive behaviors, inability to speak, cryp

Research status of elderly-care robots and safe human-robot interaction methods.

Faced with the increasingly severe global aging population with fewer children, the research, development, and application of elderly-care robots are expected to provide some technical means to solve the problems of elderly care, disability and semi-disability nursing, and rehabilitation. Elderly-care robots involve biomechanics, computer science, automatic control, ethics, and other fields of knowledge, which is one of the most challenging and most concerned research fields of robotics. Unlike other robots, elderly-care robots work for the frail elderly. There is information exchange and ener

The social phenotype associated with Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome: Autistic traits juxtaposed with high social drive and prosociality.

The aim of this study was to provide a descriptive overview of the social characteristics associated with Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WSS). A total of 24 parents of children/adults with WSS (11F, mean age = 12.94 years, SD = 8.00) completed the Social Responsiveness Scale 2nd Edition (SRS-2); Colorado Learning Difficulties Questionnaire (CLDQ) and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Almost half our sample reported a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 70% had intellectual disability. On the SDQ, over 90% of participants were rated in borderline/clinical ranges in Peer P

Approach to Pediatric Intractable Migraine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Intractable migraine in children and adolescents is a significant cause of disability and decreased quality of life (QoL) in this population. Challenges include lack of unifying definition for intractable migraine, and limited data on best-practice management in this age group, with most current treatment pathways extrapolated from adult studies or expert consensus. RECENT FINDINGS: A comprehensive approach in the evaluation and management of intractable migraine in this age group encompasses excluding secondary causes of headache; making an accurate diagnosis; identifying

Regional Overview on the Double Burden of Malnutrition and Examples of Program and Policy Responses: Latin America and the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: Hunger, food insecurity, stunting, anemia, overweight, and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) may coexist in the same person, household, and community in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The double burden of malnutrition (DBM) is an important cause of disability and premature death, which could be addressed with comprehensive policies such as the Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents. This paper summarizes the main policies and actions aimed to prevent undernutrition and obesity. SUMMARY: Several countries are implementing the Plan of Action,

Novel insights of disability assessment in adult myositis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the novel development of standardized clinical outcome measures used in adult patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). A further aim was to determine what aspects of IIM are covered by these outcome measures according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). RECENT FINDINGS: The sporadic inclusion body myositis functional assessment (sIFA) is the first diagnosis-specific patient-driven patient-reported outcome measure. The adult myositis assessment tool (AMAT) is a new outcome measure assessing physical perfo

Assessment and management of pain in haemophilia patients.

Haemophilia patients experience acute pain during joint bleeds and chronic pain from haemophilic arthropathy. More than 50% of haemophilia patients have painful joints that cause disability and impair quality of life. Unfortunately, only a few clinical studies have investigated the non-pharmacological or pharmacological treatments for pain or the adverse effects of pain on the health and quality of life of children and adults with haemophilia. There are no detailed algorithms or guidelines for pain management in haemophilia patients, and treatment is largely empirical. Therefore, a standardize

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of topiramate in adults with epilepsy and intellectual disability: impact on seizures, severity, and quality of life.

This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled UK trial evaluated the effect of topiramate as add-on therapy on seizure frequency, seizure severity, and quality of life in patients with epilepsy and intellectual disability. There were three phases: 4 weeks baseline, 18 weeks titration to 200-400 mg topiramate/day (adults) or 5-9 mg/kg/day (children), 12 weeks maintenance. Recruitment was low (88/120); analyses were underpowered. Seizure frequency varied enormously (median 17.7, maximum 1706.2). There was no significant difference in reduction in mean total seizure frequency or number of res

Atypical longitudinal development of speech-evoked auditory brainstem response in preschool children with autism spectrum disorders.

Language impairment is common in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Previous research has shown that this disability may be, in part, due to atypical auditory processing of speech stimuli. However, how speech sounds are processed in children with ASD remains largely unknown. The present study assessed the developmental pattern of auditory information processing at the level of the brainstem in preschool children with ASD using speech-evoked auditory brainstem response (speech-ABR). Children with ASD (N = 15) and of typical developing (TD) (N = 20), both of preschool age, were enro

The clinical outcomes of deep gray matter injury in children with cerebral palsy in relation with brain magnetic resonance imaging.

UNLABELLED: In the present study we investigated the nature and extent of clinical outcomes using various classifications and analyzed the relationship between brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and the extent of clinical outcomes in children with cerebral palsy (CP) with deep gray matter injury. The deep gray matter injuries of 69 children were classified into hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and kernicterus patterns. HIE patterns were divided into four groups (I-IV) based on severity. Functional classification was investigated using the gross motor function classification s

Global, Regional and National Burden of Hemolytic Disease and Other Neonatal Jaundice, 1980/90-2021, and Projections to 2050: A Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn and other forms of neonatal jaundice remain important causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five worldwide. Despite improvements in prevention and treatment such as Rh screening, phototherapy, and exchange transfusion, the burden remains uneven across regions. This study assessed global, regional, and national trends in incidence, prevalence, mortality, Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years of Life Lost (YLLs), and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) from 1980/1990 to 2021 using Global Burden of Disease (GB
