[Simultaneous Resection of Mediastinal and Liver Hydatid Disease].

Cystic echinococcosis is an uncommon zoonosis in Japan. Typical location of the cyst is the liver and the lung. Mediastinal hydatidosis is found in less than 0.1% of all hydatid disease patients. We report a rare case of 68 years old male with mediastinal and liver hydatid cysts. Serological test confirmed the diagnosis of hydatidosis. The patient underwent complete resection of mediastinal and liver cysts successfully. Postoperative follow-up for two years has not shown any signs of recurrence. Simultaneous resection of the cysts in different sites including mediastinum is rare and has not be…

A CT-based radiomics nomogram for the differentiation of pulmonary cystic echinococcosis from pulmonary abscess.

The purpose of this study was to establish a clinical prediction model for the differential diagnosis of pulmonary cystic echinococcosis (CE) and pulmonary abscess according to computed tomography (CT)-based radiomics signatures and clinical indicators. This is a retrospective single-centre study. A total of 117 patients, including 53 with pulmonary CE and 64 with pulmonary abscess, were included in our study and were randomly divided into a training set (n = 95) and validation set (n = 22). Radiomics features were extracted from CT images, a radiomics signature was constructed, and clinical i…

Primary solitary hydatid disease of brain in a 16-year-old girl: a case report.

Isolated involvement of brain with hydatid disease is a rare manifestation and occurs in only 1-2% of all Echinococcus granulosus infections. Here we present a young female of 16 years with primary intra cranial hydatid cyst without any extracranial involvement in the liver or lung. The patient was managed surgically and anti-helemthic medications were given, and the patient was discharged. The objective is to report a rare case of primary solitary hydatid cyst of brain. The incidence of isolated hydatidosis of brain is rare and should be considered as a differential diagnosis in endemic areas…

Superior Vena Cava Syndrome Secondary to the Largest Reported Thoracic Hydatid Disease.

Hydatid cyst disease, caused by Echinococcus species, can present with a variety of symptoms depending on the location in the body. In this report, we present a rare case of a 25-year-old male with a hydatid cyst who presented with progressive dyspnea and swelling of the facial, neck, and arm veins, i.e., the symptoms of superior vena cava syndrome. CT scan showed a huge cystic lesion on the right side of the thorax compressing the superior vena cava. The total size of the cyst was 183 X 209.5 X 333 mm, which is the largest collection of hydatid cysts reported in the thorax. A median sternotom…

Pitfalls in the surgical treatment of undiagnosed lung lesions and cystic pulmonary hydatidosis.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cysts can mimic many lung pathologies radiologically, as well as some malignant or benign lung tumors may show hydatid cyst-like radiological features. The aim of our study is to present our clinical experience and recommendations by analyzing the cases that create diagnostic difficulties by presenting a common radiological pattern with a pulmonary hydatid cyst. METHODS: The patients who were operated on with a preliminary diagnosis of hydatid cyst but were diagnosed differently, and who were operated on with different prediagnoses and unexpectedly diagnosed with hydatid c

[Patient with pulmonary cysts and diagnosis of co-infection with tuberculosis and hydatidosis. Pediatric cases report].

Numerous entities in the pediatric population can present in the form of cysts or as lesions with similar characteristics. Of the pathologies that can cause these images in children, infectious diseases are the most frequent. We present the case of a native of Bolivia with recent immigration to Argentina who presented a pulmonary co-infection with tuberculosis and hydatidosis. Both infections can present with similar signs and symptoms and although this association is rarely reported in the literature, certain immunological mechanisms could intervene in the causal association of co-infection b

Mediastinal and pericardial hydatidosis: A case report with review of the literature.

Hydatidosis is an echinococcosis caused by the development of Echinococcus granulosus larvae in humans. The lung is the second most frequent site after the liver. The primary mediastinal and pericardial localisations are extremely rare. Ultrasound and CT scans play an important role in the diagnosis of this disease. We report the case of an 11-year-old female patient from a rural environment with a history of dogs contact, whose symptomatology consisted of chest pain, dyspnoea, all evolving in a febrile context. The imagery showed the existence of multiple mediastinal and pericardial collection…

An unusual localization of echinococcosis: Gallbladder hydatid cyst.

Echinococcosis is endemic in Mediterranean countries. Liver then lungs are the most affected organs. Gallbladder hydatid cyst is an exceptional localization. A 64-year-old patient was referred to our surgical outpatient department by his physician for suspicion of liver hydatid cyst based on right upper quadrant abdominal pain, associated with nausea. Physical examination showed mild tenderness of the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. A computed tomography abdominal scan showed a multivesicular cystic lesion of the segment IV measuring 9.5 × 7.5 × 13 cm with exophytic component abutting the…

Cluster Headache and the Comprehension Paradox.

The chemoreflexes are important modulators of sympathetic activation. The peripheral chemoreceptors located in the carotid bodies respond primarily to hypoxaemia. Central chemoreceptors located in the region of the brainstem respond to hypercapnia. Activation of either the hypoxic or hypercapnic chemoreflex elicits both hyperventilation and sympathetic activation. During apnoea, when the inhibitory influence of stretch of the pulmonary afferents is eliminated, there is a potentiation of the sympathetic response to both hypoxia and hypercapnia. This inhibitory influence of the pulmonary afferen

Genome-wide profiling of the expression of serum derived exosomal circRNAs in patients with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis.

The patients with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis is poorly detected due to invasive and slow growth. Thus, early diagnosis of hepatic alveolar echinococcosis is so important for patients. Circular RNAs are crucial types of the non-coding RNA. Recent studies have provided serum-derived exosomal circRNAs as potential biomarkers for detection of various diseases. The clinical importance of exosomal circRNAs in hepatic alveolar echinococcosis have never been explored before. Here, we investigated the serum-derived exosomal circRNAs in the diagnosis of hepatic alveolar echinococcosis. Firstly, Hig…

Albendazole reduces hepatic inflammation and endoplasmic reticulum-stress in a mouse model of chronic Echinococcus multilocularis infection.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcus multilocularis causes alveolar echinococcosis (AE), a rising zoonotic disease in the northern hemisphere. Treatment of this fatal disease is limited to chemotherapy using benzimidazoles and surgical intervention, with frequent disease recurrence in cases without radical surgery. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying E. multilocularis infections and host-parasite interactions ultimately aids developing novel therapeutic options. This study explored an involvement of unfolded protein response (UPR) and endoplasmic reticulum-stress (ERS) during E. multilocularis…

Geographic distribution and prevalence of human echinococcosis at the township level in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis, a zoonotic parasitic disease, is caused by larval stages of cestodes in the Echinococcus genus. Echinococcosis is highly prevalent in ten provinces/autonomous regions of western and northern China. In 2016, an epidemiological survey of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) revealed that the prevalence of human echinococcosis was 1.66%, which was much higher than the average prevalence in China (0.24%). Therefore, to improve on the current prevention and control measures, it is important to understand the prevalence and spatial distribution characteristics of human echinococ…

Transcriptional effects of electroporation on Echinococcus multilocularis primary cell culture.

Echinococcus multilocularis is the etiological agent of alveolar echinococcosis (AE), a serious parasitic disease in the Northern Hemisphere. The E. multilocularis primary cell cultivation system, together with E. multilocularis genome data and a range of pioneering molecular-based tools have advanced the research on this and other cestodes. RNA interference (RNAi) and microRNA knock-down have recently contributed to the study of the cellular and molecular basis of tapeworm development and host-parasite interaction. These, as well as other techniques, normally involve an electroporation step f…
