Trabecular meshwork endothelial (TME) cells secrete a number of factors, such as enzymes and cytokines, which modulate the functions of the cells and the extracellular matrix of the conventional aqueous outflow pathway. BACKGROUND: "Controlled cyclophotocoagulation" is a real-time dosage control which reduces the complications of transscleral cyclophotocoagulation to a negligible amount in European eyes. Applied to a few African eyes, however, the method failed. Obviously, the physical parameters of the laser procedure need adjustment to African eyes.
METHOD AND MATERIAL: After theoretical investigations and tests in African cadaver eyes, 940 nm laser wavelength instead of 810 nm and a different fiber coupling had solved the problem of physical differences between European and African eyes to a large extent.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative effectiveness of neodymium:YAG cyclophotocoagulation (NCYC) and pars plana modified Baerveldt implant (PPBI) surgery on intraocular pressure (IOP) control in eyes with neovascular glaucoma (NVG).
PARTICIPANTS: In this retrospective comparative group study, 30 patients with NVG treated with contact NCYC were compared with 18 patients who underwent PPBI. BACKGROUND: Retro- or peribulbar anesthesia are the standard procedures for cyclodestructive surgery. Because these methods of anesthesia may further compromise optic nerve function, especially in advanced glaucoma, subconjunctival anesthesia was evaluated as an alternative procedure in contact diode laser cyclophotocoagulation (CPC).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective study concerning diode laser CPC in advanced glaucoma was started using subconjunctival anesthesia with 2% mepivacaine. Complications and pain during CPC (5 point rating scale) and on the first postoperative day were recorded.

Eye involvement can occur in the course of ankylosing spondylitis and other spondylarthropathies (reactive arthritis, enteropathic and psoriatic rheumatism). The most frequent presentation is an acute anterior, unilateral, relapsing, sometimes in the contralateral eye uveitis. Local treatment that associates corticosteroids and cycloplegia usually leads to a complete healing, without sequelae. Involvement of other ocular structures is rare in spondylarthropathies.

PURPOSE: To determine the factors associated with visual acuity loss following transscleral Nd:YAG cyclophotocoagulation (TYC).
METHODS: The authors retrospectively studied 479 patients followed for a mean of 22 months after the initial TYC in one eye and analyzed the data with univariate and multivariate analysis for the factors associated with visual acuity loss.
