[Adolescent's refusal of school: a psychopathological aspect].

OBJECTIVE: Despite the multiple studies on the school refusal phenomenon, clinical/psychopathological aspects of this problem need further studies. Authors performed a clinical/psychopathological analysis of the school refusal phenomenon in adolescents who are under supervision of a psychiatrist. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It were examined 223 adolescent patients (169 males and 54 females) with different appearances of school refusal. RESULTS: A set of factors predisposing to school refusal (family system dysfunction, heritability, character features, psychological immaturity, demoralization synd

[Neuropsychiatric disturbances in essential tremor].

This review focuses on the neuropsychiatric manifestations (personality disturbances, depressive symptoms, cognitive impairment and dementia), which have been described in this last decade in patients with essential tremor. We compared the data derived from the Neurologic Disorders in Central Spain (NEDICES) study, a prospective population-based survey, with those derived from the literature. The traditional view of essential tremor as a mono-symptomatic condition characterized by action tremor is now changing. First, it is known that many patients also have other motor manifestations apart fr

The role of emotion regulation in the treatment of child anxiety disorders.

In this review, we examine the role of emotion regulation in the treatment of children with anxiety disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to "work" for children with anxiety disorders and it has been categorized as an evidence-based treatment. However, most studies have shown that the treatment is effective for about 60-70% of children, leaving the remaining children symptomatic and oftentimes with persisting psychological disorders. Of importance, it has also been shown that many children with anxiety disorders demonstrate poor emotion regulation skills. Despite these f

Implications of chronic methamphetamine use: a literature review.

Methamphetamine (MA) abuse is increasing to epidemic proportions, both nationally and globally. Chronic MA use has been linked to significant impairments in different arenas of neuropsychological function. To better understand this issue, a computerized literature search (PubMed, 1964-2004) was used to collect research studies examining the neurobiological and neuropsychiatric consequences of chronic MA use. Availability of MA has markedly increased in the United States due to recent technological improvements in both mass production and clandestine synthesis, leading to significant public hea

Social phobia and the recall of autobiographical memories.

Although cognitive theories of anxiety suggest that anxious individuals are characterized by the biased tendency to recall negative experiences with perceived threat, few empirical studies have confirmed this notion. To investigate personal memories associated with threatening experiences, individuals with socio phobia (n=16) and nonanxious individuals (n=17) completed an autobiographical memory-cueing procedure. Participants were presented with 15 social threat words and 15 neutral words, and they recorded the first specific memory that came to mind. Autobiographical memories were coded for s

Natural animal models of human psychiatric conditions: assessment of mechanism and validity.

1. The classic animal models for human psychiatric conditions involves rodents. As prey species, their normal behaviors of avoidance would be considered pathological in humans and dogs. Hence, such models may not be homologous for similar behaviors found in psychiatric pathology in humans. 2. Dogs exhibit pathological behavioral conditions that may be equivalent to certain human psychiatric conditions. These canine conditions appear spontaneously or endogenously in the absence of genetic or neurochemcial manipulation, and as such, may be homologous to the human condition. 3. If canine conditio

Dengue versus COVID-19: comparing the incidence of cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric and autoimmune complications.

BACKGROUND: While persistence of chronic symptoms following dengue infection has been documented in small prospective cohorts, population-based studies are limited. The post-acute risk of new-incident multi-systemic complications following dengue infection was contrasted against that following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in a multi-ethnic adult Asian population. METHODS: National testing and healthcare claims that databases in Singapore were utilized to build a retrospective population-based adult cohort with laboratory-confirmed infection during ove

Dissociation in children and adolescents as reaction to trauma--an overview of conceptual issues and neurobiological factors.

The discovery of trauma as an aetiological factor in mental dissociation is more than a century old, but neurobiological research in the last decade has started to clarify a neurobiological basis that may shed light on the complex symptomatology observed in traumatized children. Dysfunctional stress responses, emotional-based style of functioning, hyperarousal, anxiety, irritability, impulsivity, disengaged attention and educational underachievement may thus begin to be better understood. The aim of this overview is to give an update on the concept of dissociation and the links to new neurobio

Possible Cognitive Dysfunction Associated With High-Dose Fluoxetine in a Patient on Lithium.

Antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine, are widely prescribed medications. Fluoxetine is considered a first-line pharmacological treatment for common psychiatric conditions such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In large clinical trials, fluoxetine has consistently demonstrated a strong safety and tolerability profile over the past 30 years. This case describes a 36-year-old Caucasian female with a history of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and bipolar I disorder treated with lithium, who developed new-onse

Psilocybin mitigates the cognitive deficits observed in a rat model of Fragile X syndrome.

RATIONALE: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common form of inherited intellectual disability (ID) and the leading monogenic cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Serotonergic neurotransmission has a key role in the modulation of neuronal activity during development, and therefore, it has been hypothesized to be involved in ASD and co-occurring conditions including FXS. As serotonin is involved in synaptic remodeling and maturation, serotonergic insufficiency during childhood may have a compounding effect on brain patterning in neurodevelopmental disorders, manifesting as behavioral and

Feasibility and potential benefits of an attention and executive function intervention on metacognition in a mixed pediatric sample.

The term "metacognition" describes thinking about a cognitive phenomenon or, more simply put, thinking about thinking . Metacognition involves using knowledge about one's cognitive processes to change behavior, including monitoring and controlling cognition. Metacognition is vital for learning and is often more difficult for children with neurodevelopmental concerns (e.g. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD], Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder [FASD], Autism Spectrum Disorders [ASD]), possibly due to underlying deficits in attention and executive functioning (EF). The present study eva

The Beliefs in Trichotillomania Scale (BiTS): Factor analyses and preliminary validation.

OBJECTIVES: The role of cognitions and beliefs in trichotillomania (TTM; hair pulling disorder) has been the subject of only limited investigation. This study aimed to develop and validate the Beliefs in TTM Scale (BiTS). METHODS: A pool of 50 items based upon themes identified in previous research was administered online to 841 participants with and without self-reported problematic, non-cosmetic hair pulling behaviours. RESULTS: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses conducted in randomly split-halves of the sample supported retention of 14 items comprising three factors: negative se

Post-traumatic stress and gambling related cognitions: Analyses in inpatient and online samples.

Individuals with gambling disorder (GD) report much higher rates of post-traumatic stress symptoms and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSS/D) than the general population, and individuals with both PTSS/D and GD often report much greater distress and impairment in daily life in comparison to individuals with GD alone (Grubbs, Chapman, Milner, Gutierrez, & Bradley, 2018). Despite these associations, little is known about the specific ways in which PTSS/D and GD might influence each other. To address this gap in research, the present work sought to examine how PTSD might be related to the expres

Acute findings in an acquired neurosensory dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: In the Autumn of 2016, diplomatic personnel residing in Havana began to present with symptoms of dizziness, ear pain, and tinnitus that emerged after perception of high frequency noise and/or a pressure sensation. Understanding the acute symptoms of this disorder is important for better defining the disorder and developing optimal diagnostic, preventive, and treatment algorithms. OBJECTIVES: To define the presenting symptoms in a cohort of patients in the acute time period after perceiving a noise/pressure exposure in Havana. DESIGN/SETTINGS/PARTICIPANTS: Review of 25 symptomatic

Got worms? Perinatal exposure to helminths prevents persistent immune sensitization and cognitive dysfunction induced by early-life infection.

The incidence of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases has risen dramatically in post-industrial societies. "Biome depletion" - loss of commensal microbial and multicellular organisms such as helminths (intestinal worms) that profoundly modulate the immune system - may contribute to these increases. Hyperimmune-associated disorders also affect the brain, especially neurodevelopment, and increasing evidence links early-life infection to cognitive and neurodevelopmental disorders. We have demonstrated previously that rats infected with bacteria as newborns display life-long vulnerabilities to cog

Diagnosis and rehabilitation attempt of a patient with acquired dyslexia.

UNLABELLED: Although dyslexia is a common consequence of brain damage there are few studies about therehabilitation of this disorder. Cognitive Neuropsychology models of reading have been used to describe severalsyndromes of acquired dyslexia. Phonological dyslexia is a reading disorder characterized by a dysfunctionalgrapheme-to-phoneme conversion procedure, which affects the ability to read low frequency words and nonwords. Lexical reading is preserved and patients can read frequent words (regular and irregular). OBJECTIVE: Verify the application of the cognitive model in the characterizati

High-functioning autism and schizophrenia: a comparison of an early and late onset neurodevelopmental disorder.

Autism and schizophrenia are separate neurodevelopmental disorders that share a number of interpersonal and cognitive deficits. The symptoms of autism first appear during early life while schizophrenic symptoms do not typically appear until adolescence at the earliest. Efforts have been made to characterize the pattern of cognitive function in both disorders, and certain resemblances have become apparent such as deficits in abstract reasoning and the more complex aspects of memory and language. The present study provided a comparison of cognitive function between the two disorders. The autisti
