Prospective associations between stressors and alcohol use from early adolescence to young adulthood in Mexican-origin youth in the United States.

Stressors experienced across multiple domains (e.g., family and peers) may contribute to alcohol use trajectories; however, little is known about the longitudinal links between stressors and alcohol use among Latinx youth. Guided by prior work on stressors and alcohol use, the present study used longitudinal data to examine whether Mexican-origin adolescents' (N = 674; 50% female; 28% Mexico born; 72% U.S. born) experiences of family and peer stressors across early to middle adolescence (Mage = 10.86, SDage = 0.51) predicted trajectories of alcohol use frequency and binge drinking from middle …

[Determination of beta-hexosaminidase and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase activities in urine of pregnant women to monitor alcohol consumption].

BACKGROUND: Drinking of alcohol by pregnant women provokes many fetal development disorders, first of all the function of central nervous system and can lead to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - FAS. AIM: Aims of investigation were to determine beta - hexosaminidase (HEX) and gamma - glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) activity in the urine to monitoring consumption of alcohol by pregnant women in first trimester and to assess the effect of ethyl alcohol on fetus development. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 22 pregnant women, who did not declare consumption of ethanol containing drinks. The level of creatinine, GGT a…

Alcohol use and cardiovascular disease: the Kaiser-Permanente experience.

Earlier studies of Kaiser-Permanente data have indicated that regular use of alcohol is associated with a reduced risk of major coronary events and that regular use of three or more drinks is associated with an increased prevalence of hypertension. A new study of hospitalizations in relation to alcohol use confirms this disparity in relations between alcohol use and cardiovascular disease and suggests that alcoholic cardiomyopathy has a relatively low incidence. An inverse relation between alcohol use and hospitalizations for cholelithiasis raises the possibility of a common pathogenic mechani

Fetal alcohol syndrome: a dilemma of maternal alcoholism.

The existence of FAS can no longer be denied; reports of greater than 200 cases which fall into a phenotypically recognizable continuum justify its existence. At this point, however, it is probably prudent to withhold judgment of the specific human teratogenicity of alcohol until more refined information regarding dose-risk relationships are available not only from humans, but also from animal models, including primates. It may be that Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, at this point, should be considered the Fetal Alcoholism Syndrome. At any rate, until much more is known, it would seem advisable to obs

Change in alcohol consumption and all-cause mortality among postmenopausal women diagnosed with breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Evidence is inconsistent regarding an association between alcohol consumption and survival following a breast cancer diagnosis; the … essation was not associated with a decrease in ACM among older breast cancer survivors. Among those drinking ≥ 1 drink/day, an increase in consumption pre-diagnosis was associated with higher mortality. Findings may be limited by uncontrolled confounding, a low prevalence of heavy drinking, or an insufficient duration of sustained change.

Is a Few Too Many? Alcohol Consumption and Prostate Cancer Upgrading During Active Surveillance.

BACKGROUND: The association between alcohol consumption and prostate cancer (PCa) outcomes remains mixed, with particularly limited data on the association between alcohol consumption and risk of upgrading among men undergoing active surveillance (AS). METHODS: We analyzed men with Grade Group (GG) 1 PCa managed in a prospectively maintained AS cohort who, at the time of AS enrollment, completed a questionnaire assessing average weekly alcohol consumption during the 5 years preceding PCa diagnosis. Alcohol intake was categorized as < 1, 1-6, and ≥ 7 drinks per week. Multivariable competing ri

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists and Alcohol Use: A Real-Word Observational Study in a Large, Integrated Health Care System.

BACKGROUND: Growing research suggests that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) reduce alcohol consumption, positioning them as new potential pharmacotherapies for alcohol use disorder. However, human studies examining alcohol consumption measures in generalizable samples have been limited. METHODS: In this cohort study, we analyzed electronic health records from a large, integrated health care system (Kaiser Permanente Northern California) to examine the association between new prescriptions of GLP-1RAs and change in alcohol use among adults. Propensity score matching was uti

"He is lovely and awful": The challenges of being close to an individual with alcohol problems.

Introduction: In the last 20 years, there has been growing evidence that heavy drinking causes serious harm not only to the person who drinks but also to the person's relations and concerned significant others (CSOs). A relationship with a heavy drinker is often full of conflicts, and CSOs are frequently exposed to aggression, psychological, and sometimes physical violence from the heavy drinker. Despite their struggles, CSOs often feel it is difficult to seek professional help for these problems. The aim of this study was to investigate what problems CSOs of people with alcohol problems exper…

Beneficial effect of xylose consumption on postprandial hyperglycemia in Korean: a randomized double-blind, crossover design.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that xylose selectively inhibited the activity of sucrase. Xylose supplementation may have a beneficial effect on the postprandial glycemic response. However, no studies have investigated patients with IFG or the effectivity of a dose of D-xylose less than 10 % (w/w). METHODS: The present study determined the effect of xylose consumption on postprandial hyperglycemia in normal (n = 25) and hyperglycemic subjects (n = 50). Subjects in this double-blind crossover design study were randomly assigned to consume a sucrose drink (Control, sucrose 50 g + de

Hazardous Alcohol Use Associated with Increased Sexual Risk Behaviors Among People Who Inject Drugs.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is associated with a multitude of severe health consequences. While risk behaviors related to illicit drug use are commonly studied among people who inject drugs (PWID), the role of alcohol use has received substantially less attention in this population. We explored whether drug and sexual risk behaviors as well as experiences of violence were associated with hazardous alcohol use in a cohort of PWID. METHODS: Analyses were conducted using observational data from a prospective cohort of community-recruited HIV-negative PWID in Vancouver, Canada. We used the U.S. National
