BACKGROUND: The incidence and case fatality rate of snakebite in Argentina are poorly known.
METHODS: The authors used questionnaires provided with antivenoms by the primary manufacturer of anti-venoms in Argentina.
RESULTS: A total of 8083 completed questionnaires was collected between 1978 and 1998. The annual incidence of snakebite was 1.8 bites per 100,000 inhabitants, with a high geographical heterogeneity; in the northern provinces of the country, the incidence can exceed 150 snakebites per 100,000 people per year. Modern methods of diagnosis and treatment allow for better survival outcomes and, more importantly, for higher curability of cancer. Female cancer survivors often need effective advice concerning the choice of birth control methods. The majority of gynecologists are reluctant to propose anything other than barrier methods due to lack of information concerning safe use of more effective contraceptives. Cystic echinococcosis is parasitic disease due to the larval stage of the metacestode Echinococcus granulosus in the liver (80%), lungs, kidneys, spleen, myocardium etc. Humans are accidental intermediate hosts. Diagnosis is based on laboratory and imaging studies. Treatment is multimodal, surgical and medical. Risks for dangerous complications and relapses are quite common. Adequate follow-up is needed. Albendazole has a central role in the medical therapy of the disease.
