A modified crescent cartilage block for improving the retroauricular contour of the reconstructed ear: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The use of a semilunar cartilage block to elevate a reconstructed ear does not always achieve a well-defined auriculocephalic sulcus. Herein, we modified the conventional crescent cartilage block through sculpting a concavity at its posterior surface, with the aim of improving the retroauricular contour. The study aimed to verify the effectiveness and reliability of this modified cartilage block through a retrospective cohort study. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent Nagata microtia reconstruction between October 2017 and November 2018 were conducted. The es…

Direct Delivery of Antisense Oligonucleotides to the Middle and Inner Ear Improves Hearing and Balance in Usher Mice.

Usher syndrome is a syndromic form of hereditary hearing impairment that includes sensorineural hearing loss and delayed-onset retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Type 1 Usher syndrome (USH1) is characterized by congenital profound sensorineural hearing impairment and vestibular areflexia, with adolescent-onset RP. Systemic treatment with antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) targeting the human USH1C c.216G>A splicing mutation in a knockin mouse model of USH1 restores hearing and balance. Herein, we explore the effect of delivering ASOs locally to the ear to treat hearing and vestibular dysfunction associ…

Identification of residual-recurrent cholesteatoma in operated ears: diagnostic accuracy of dual-energy CT and MRI.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) to identify residual-recurrent cholesteatoma using the second-look surgery as the reference standard. METHODS: This prospective, institutional review board-approved study included 19 consecutive patients (11 males and 8 females; mean age of 62.2, range 34-80 years). Since five patients were studied bilaterally, a total of 24 ears were evaluated with DECT and MRI between February 2017 and June 2018. Any abnormal middle ear attenuation on high-reso…

Comparative analysis of the shape and size of the middle ear cavity of turtles reveals no correlation with habitat ecology.

The middle ear of turtles differs from other reptiles in being separated into two distinct compartments. Several ideas have been proposed as to why the middle ear is compartmentalized in turtles, most suggesting a relationship with underwater hearing. Extant turtle species span fully marine to strictly terrestrial habitats, and ecomorphological hypotheses of turtle hearing predict that this should correlate with variation in the structure of the middle ear due to differences in the fluid properties of water and air. We investigate the shape and size of the air-filled middle ear cavity of 56 ex…

Extension patterns of vestibular schwannomas towards the middle ear: three new cases and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Middle ear extension of vestibular schwannomas is not a common occurrence, and only a few cases have been described so far in past publications. We report three new cases of vestibular schwannomas extending to the middle ear and reviewed the literature to specify the patterns of such an extension. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed databases of previously published articles to search for additional cases of middle ear extension of vestibular schwannomas and compared them to the cases we have documented. Extension patterns of the tumours were analysed, especially focusing on the ext…

Establishment of a Standardized Technique for Concha-type Microtia-How to Incorporate the Cartilage Frame into the Remnant Ear.

UNLABELLED: We have already reported surgical procedures for lobule-type microtia that provide an excellent contour and shape of the ear with minimum sacrifice of the donor. We have succeeded in establishing a standard surgical technique for almost all types of concha-type microtia that effectively uses the remnant ear and can use a unified costal cartilage frame. METHODS AND RESULTS: The concept of our technique is that remnant cartilage should be used maximally but that the deformed area should be completely replaced by the costal cartilage frame. The differences between the cartilage frame…

Evaluation of a new patient consultation initiative in community pharmacy for ear, nose and throat and eye conditions.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacy Common Ailments Services can ease the considerable workload pressures on primary and secondary care services. However, evidence is needed to determine whether there are benefits of extending such services beyond their typically limited scope. This study therefore aimed to evaluate a new community pharmacy model of a service for patients with ear, nose and throat (ENT) and eye conditions who would otherwise have had to seek primary care appointments or emergency care. METHODS: People with specified ENT or eye conditions registered with General Practitioners in St…

Characterization of a B16-F10 melanoma model locally implanted into the ear pinnae of C57BL/6 mice.

The common experimental use of B16-F10 melanoma cells focuses on exploring their metastatic potential following intravenous injection into mice. In this study, B16-F10 cells are used to develop a primary tumor model by implanting them directly into the ears of C57BL/6J mice. The model represents a reproducible and easily traceable tool for local tumor growth and for making additional in vivo observations, due to the localization of the tumors. This model is relatively simple and involves (i) surgical opening of the ear skin, (ii) removal of a square-piece of cartilage followed by (iii) the imp…

Beals syndrome with middle and inner ear dysplasia and encephalocele: A case report and review of imaging findings.

A 10-year-old male with history of Beals syndrome presented with hearing loss and was found to have middle and inner ear dysplasia and left temporal encephalocele on imaging. Beals syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder caused by a mutation in the fibrillin-2 gene. Skeletal manifestations of Beals have been reported, including anomalies of the long bones, calvarium, and spine. External ear abnormalities with "crumpled ear" deformity are seen in the majority of patients. This is the first case to report imaging findings of the middle and inner ear in a patient with Bea…
