Emerging Viral Infections: Nursing Implications and Management Strategies.

Infectious diseases have circulated the globe since the dawn of time, and new ones are seen often. Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are defined as a newly found or an already known infectious disease that is rapidly increasing in incidence. COVID-19 changed the theoretic risk of this to a reality. Frontline providers, particularly nurses, were at the forefront of caring for those with COVID-19. This article discusses the history of EID, how care is and should be provided to patients with infectious disease, and future work that needs to be done.

Comorbidities of atopic dermatitis: Emerging evidence and clinical considerations.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease and has traditionally been viewed as a disorder confined to the skin. However, emerging epidemiologic, genetic, and mechanistic evidence increasingly supports the concept that AD represents a systemic disease associated with a broad spectrum of immune-related comorbidities. This review synthesizes current literature on the comorbidities associated with AD, including dermatologic, respiratory, gastrointestinal, rheumatologic, neurologic, ophthalmologic, and endocrine disorders. Well-established associations include othe

Crinecerfont: emerging role in the management of congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency is a rare genetic endocrine disorder characterized by impaired cortisol synthesis, excessive adrenal androgen production, and elevated adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) concentrations. The current standard of care involves supraphysiologic doses of glucocorticoids to suppress ACTH and manage androgen excess, often leading to long-term complications. AREAS COVERED: A literature search of PubMed was conducted. This review critically examines the pharmacology, clinical efficacy, and potential role of crinecerfon

Ratio of Postdischarge Emergency Department Visits to Readmissions by Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric readmissions and postdischarge emergency department (ED) visits are common measures of postdischarge use and vary across pediatric conditions. Although often studied separately, these outcomes represent a continuum of hospital reuse. We introduce the ED/READ ratio (the ratio of postdischarge ED visits to readmissions) to characterize diagnosis-specific patterns of hospital reuse across common pediatric conditions. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective cohort study, we included children aged 0 to 17 years discharged from an urban tertiary children's hospital betwee

The enigma of vascular dementia: current state and emerging perspectives.

Vascular dementia (VaD) is a neurocognitive disorder attributed to different types of cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and characterized by complex and multifold pathophysiological mechanisms. The most common forms in the elderly brain are multi-infarct, subcortical and strategic infarct dementias caused by atherosclerosis, small vessel disease, and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), hereditary forms being rare. VaD prevalence, accounting for 5% to 20% of all dementias, in comparison to Alzheimer disease and mixed dementias declines due to recent improvement of cardiovascular risk factors. Its di

Plant-Derived Terpenes as Emerging Therapeutics Against Schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis remains one of the most significant neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) worldwide, sustained by the complex biology of Schistosoma species and the host's immunopathological responses to tissue-trapped eggs. Despite decades of reliance on praziquantel (PZQ) as the sole chemotherapeutic option, major limitations persist, including its lack of activity against juvenile worms, incomplete protection against reinfection, and concerns regarding emerging tolerance. These challenges, together with persistent hotspots of transmission and uneven global progress toward disease elimination,

New World screwworm: a re-emerging parasitic threat.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: New World screwworm (NWS) is an emerging parasitic threat in Central America and Mexico, which is spreading northward into the southern United States. Here we highlight the changing epidemiology, lifecycle of the NWS fly, clinical presentation, identification, treatment, and potential complications of NWS myiasis. RECENT FINDINGS: Despite decades of successfully containing NWS flies south of the Darien Gap in southern Panama, NWS flies reemerged in the Central America region in 2023 and have continued to spread northward ever since. On 3 June 2026, United States Department

The emerging roles of eosinophils in immune regulation in health and disease.

Eosinophils are evolutionarily conserved granular innate cells that can trace back to 100 million years to the emergence of gnathostomes, which now is involved in regulation of diverse homeostatic conditions and diseases in mammals. They have traditionally been associated with Th2 responses, primarily in eosinophilic allergic asthma and helminth parasitic infections. These Th2 responses are correlated with basic cationic proteins and specific cytokines release from preformed eosinophilic vesicles, associated with tissue damage and remodeling. Consequently, eosinophils have historically been ch

Emerging Immune-Based Therapeutic Strategies in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide despite recent advances in systemic therapy. The introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors has substantially expanded treatment options for advanced disease; however, durable responses are observed only in a subset of patients. Increasing evidence indicates that this limited efficacy is largely driven by the complex immune landscape of HCC, which is shaped by disease aetiology, tumour microenvironment-mediated immune suppression, and impaired innate immune surveillance. Chronic viral hepatitis and m

Preventing Disease Emergence Following Eradication: Application to Mpox.

We use simple mathematical models to explore the factors that influence the evolutionary emergence of mpox to a pathogen capable of sustained human to human transmission that poses a global threat. Smallpox eradication followed by the discontinuation of immunization with vaccinia has led to a decline in the level of population immunity against related poxviruses such as mpox. This decline in immunity results in an increase in both the number of spillovers and the extent of human to human transmission. We find that increases in transmissibility of mpox between humans have a much greater effect

Mpox emergence, epidemiology, biology, clinical features and control.

Mpox, a zoonotic orthopoxvirus disease, has transitioned from a rare infection confined to African rainforests to a global public health threat. Originally identified in laboratory monkeys in 1958, the first human case was documented in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Following the declaration of smallpox eradication in 1980 and the subsequent cessation of smallpox vaccination, mpox cases persisted at low levels before surging, ultimately leading to the declaration of two Public Health Emergencies of International Concern by the WHO in 2022 and 2024, and the Africa CDC declaration of…

Emergent Decoherence Dynamics in Doubly Disordered Spin Networks.

Elucidating the emergence of irreversible macroscopic laws from reversible quantum many-body dynamics remains challenging, particularly in disordered media. Here, in a doubly disordered electron-nuclear spin network in nitrogen-doped diamond, we uncover an emergent decoherence law for ^{13}C polarization, M(t)=e^{-sqrt[R_{p}t]}e^{-R_{d}t}, that persists over >500  s and across broad Hamiltonian regimes. We trace the law to two interdependent, electron-mediated channels: direct depolarization by a fluctuating electron bath and an indirect pathway governed by polarization transport within the di

Inhalation Injury: Update on Pathogenesis, Emerging Hazards, and Management.

Inhalation injury, the pulmonary and systemic damage caused by a single or brief exposure to toxic gases, vapors, aerosols, or particulate matter, encompasses exposure categories ranging from structural-fire smoke and industrial chemical releases to wildfire smoke, earthquake-generated dust, and novel consumer products. Relevant exposures differ markedly in timescale, and four entities are distinguished: acute inhalation injury; subacute toxic pneumonitis, which follows repeated exposure peaks or sustained exposure over weeks to months; chronic inhalational disease; and population-level enviro
