Executive Functioning and Acute Stress Responses: The Role of Cognitive Appraisals, Repetitive Negative Thinking, and Emotion Regulation.

Exposure to stress can have significant negative consequences on long-term health. Among modifiable targets for promoting adaptive stress responses, executive functioning has emerged as a promising candidate. The current study sought to examine the extent to which executive functioning facets (inhibition, flexibility, updating) and working memory capacity played a beneficial role in reactivity and recovery to an acute stressor. Participants completed executive functioning tasks in the laboratory before undergoing either an acute stressor (Maastricht Acute Stress Test, MAST) or its control equi

Social approach-avoidance conflict: Behavioural, emotional, and neural correlates along a depression-social anxiety spectrum.

Approach-avoidance conflict, in which the same option entails both rewarding and aversive consequences, has been proposed as a key process in internalizing disorders such as depression and social anxiety. Yet, human paradigms that model approach-avoidance conflict and link it to brain function remain scarce. In particular, it has been emphasized the need for studying this conflict in social contexts. We developed a Social Approach-Avoidance Conflict (SAAC) task that involved a social evaluative demand manipulation, and combined it with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 135 young

Therapists' and Researchers' Perspectives on a Transdiagnostic Ecological Momentary Intervention "EmoGuia" for Emotional Disorders: A Consensual Qualitative Study.

Mental health professionals' perspectives on transdiagnostic mobile interventions for Emotional Disorders (EDs) remain underexplored, despite their potential role in integrating ecological interventions into psychological care. This study examined the usability, acceptability, perceived clinical utility, and implementation potential of EmoGuia, a smartphone-based Ecological Momentary Intervention grounded in the Unified Protocol. Using the Consensual Qualitative Research framework, focus groups involving nine therapists and researchers were conducted following a one-week app trial. Thematic fi

Policy events, emotional fluctuations, and vaccination behavior: a longitudinal analysis of public opinion on HPV vaccines in China.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer, mainly caused by high-risk HPV infection, is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide. From the approval of the bivalent HPV vaccine in 2016 to its inclusion in the national immunization program in 2025, China's HPV vaccine policy has completed a full cycle, but long-term public opinion tracking research remains insufficient. METHODS: This study collected and cleaned 15,391 related posts from Zhihu, Weibo, Baidu Tieba, and Xiaohongshu, and used the LDA thematic model and sentiment dictionary analysis to measure vaccine hesitancy using an A2P ratio. Effects of Dante's Poetry on Emotional Arousal of Healthy Subjects and Patients with Spinal Cord Injury: A Pilot Study.

Previous studies have investigated the effects of Dante's poetry on emotional arousal and cognitive workload in healthy participants by comparing excerpts from the Inferno and Paradiso of the Divina Commedia. In this pilot study, conducted in a hospital setting, we measured electrodermal activity, an index of emotional arousal, in healthy subjects and neurological patients with spinal cord injury while they listened to four different audio recordings: Dante's Inferno, Dante's Paradiso, Machiavelli's Il Principe, and a newspaper article about the anniversary of Dante's death. We found significa

Daily emotion in fathers and mothers: Little evidence for greater paternal well-being during infant care.

Parents' daily experience of childcare has garnered considerable attention following Kahneman et al.'s (2004) finding that childcare ranked among the least enjoyable daily activities. Subsequent studies have generally found that fathers report more positive valence during childcare compared to mothers. Here, we used experience sampling to examine daily experiences of first-time parents in Denmark between 2022 and 2024, where parental leave policies aim to promote involvement of fathers in infant care. Parents responded to 7 days of prompts during maternity and paternity leave, assessing valenc

Emotional freedom techniques for cancer-related sleep disturbance and associated symptoms: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients frequently experience a debilitating and interconnected symptom cluster comprising pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance (P-F-S), which negatively impacts their quality of life and treatment outcomes. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), a mind-body intervention combining cognitive exposure with acupoint stimulation, has shown potential for addressing psychological distress, yet its effectiveness on this specific physiological symptom cluster remains underexplored. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of EFT in alleviati

Illness identity and multiple sclerosis: MS self-efficacy, emotional distress, and quality of life in people with MS.

BACKGROUND: Self-efficacy is a well-established determinant of emotional distress and quality of life (QOL) in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the more fundamental role of illness identity-a novel conceptual model in the context of chronic conditions-has not been examined. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the associations between illness identity, distress, and QOL in individuals with MS, while also assessing the mediating role of MS self-efficacy (MSSE). METHODS: This cross-sectional study used a correlational design and included 160 patients (RRMS = 64, PPMS = 68,

Association between fear of cancer recurrence and emotional distress in breast cancer: a latent profile and moderation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer patients often experience significant psychological challenges, particularly fear of cancer recurrence (FCR), which is a prevalent and distressing concern following diagnosis. FCR can lead to heightened emotional distress, including anxiety and depression. Resilience, the ability to adapt positively to adversity, may play a crucial role in mitigating these negative emotional outcomes. This study aims to explore the heterogeneity of FCR among breast cancer patients and examine the moderating effect of resilience on the relationship between FCR and emotional distress.

Somatosensory and prefrontal cortex activity relates to emotional outcomes and hair cortisol concentration in chronic postsurgical pain.

Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) poses significant socioeconomic and humanitarian challenges. This study investigated relationships between resting-state neural activation in the somatosensory cortex (SMC) and emotional functioning outcomes (depression, anxiety, perceived stress), and between prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation and chronic stress, measured by hair cortisol concentration (HCC); and whether pain intensity moderates these relationships in females with CPSP. Twenty-nine females with CPSP reported baseline pain, completed emotional functioning questionnaires, underwent functional N
