Soluble interleukin 2 receptors (IL-2R) in sera of leprosy patients from Chiang Mai, Thailand, were quantified with a solid phase enzyme immunoassay using two monoclonal antibodies to the IL-2R. Using a combination of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and SDS-PAGE with protein blot (Western blotting), increased levels of serum platelet bindable immunoglobulin (SPBIg) were demonstrated in 10 of 10 thrombocytopenic patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (7.0-60 fg Ig/platelet) with consistent binding to SDS-PAGE platelet fractions of approximate molecular weight (120 and 80 kDa). This pattern of Ig binding was characteristic of SLE and was not seen in 20 normal volunteers and infrequently seen in 20 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Toxocariasis is an infrequent disease which particularly affects children. Toxocara canis is an uncommon parasite of man, who is not the normal host for the nematode. Without doubt Toxocara will be recognised more and more thanks to specific serological tests, in particular the ELISA-ESA test. The authors observed the association of a pleural reaction and a generalised hypereosinophilia (blood, pleural fluid and broncho-alveolar lavage). They noted a complete regression on Mebendazole.

The immuno-enzymatic method permits the separate study of rheumatoid factors (RF): IgM as well as IgG, IgA, IgE, IgD. In 43 patients with rheumatoid polyarthritis (RP), classic or definite, we have studied the correlations between the various parameters of articular and extraarticular activity of RP and the levels of each isotype of RF. Anti-cryptosporidium antibody levels were measured in serum and faeces of experimentally infected calves. In serum, IgG was detectable six days after infection and remained elevated throughout infection. IgA and IgM in serum showed little change. IgG, IgA and IgM levels all rose in the faeces five or six days after infection and reached a peak between days 8 and 14 after infection and then declined.

The ELISA technique for measuring RF is a reliable, low cost, quick method which has adequate specificity and improved sensitivity over other methods. This last property plus its flexible potential for measuring RF in classes other than IgM should make it a particularly useful tool in assessing "sero-negative" patients, while in the long run its routine use should supersede that of the other tests.

Surveys of serum antibodies to enterovirus serotype 8 and parvovirus were conducted in pigs three to 21 weeks old using the virus neutralisation (VN), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and haemagglutination inhibition tests. A collection of serum specimens from 77 patients at various hospitals or clinics in Israel was used to determine the usefulness of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with a multivalent antigen for the detection of legionella antibodies. A problem of high levels of liver condemnations which had affected bought-in lambs fattened on a North Yorkshire farm for several years was investigated. Because the farmer spread pig slurry on the land, migrating Ascaris suum larvae were initially suspected as a cause but the investigation eliminated this possibility. Antibody to lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV) was assayed in 461 serum and plasma samples that had been obtained from 149 patients with classic hemophilia and 64 controls and stored for periods as long as 18 years. Results obtained from the use of ISAGA method onto 180 serum samples in order to estimate its sensibility, specificity and reliability in detection of IgM anti-Toxoplasma gondii are referred. A comparison between ISAGA and ELISA-IgM or ISAGA and AD-GF/AD-2ME shows that the results coincide and that specificity and sensibility make it reliable in indirect detection of acquired or congenital toxoplasmosis.
