The infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV) is an orthomyxovirus-like virus infecting teleosts. The disease caused by this virus has had major economic consequences for the Atlantic salmon farming industry in Norway, Canada, and Scotland. In this work, we report the cloning and sequencing of an ISAV-specific cDNA comprising 2,245 bp with an open reading frame coding for a predicted protein with a calculated molecular weight of 80.5 kDa. The putative protein sequence shows the core polymerase motifs characteristic of all viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerases. Comparison of the conserved motifs with

The association between posterior fossa malformations and epilepsy is rarely reported in the literature. We describe 54 cases with posterior fossa malformations, according to embryogenesis classification, divided into two groups on the basis of presence or absence of epilepsy. Epilepsy occurred in 22 cases (40.7%) and was not related to the type of posterior fossa malformation or to supratentorial cerebral lesions associated with the malformation. Familial antecedents for epilepsy and/or febrile convulsions influenced the presence of epilepsy in patients with posterior fossa malformations (P <

Job stress can have well-being consequences for the employee's loved ones through crossover: the transference of work-related stress from an employee to their family members. Pet dogs-who most Americans view as family members-may also be susceptible to crossover. Given prior support for dogs' abilities to perceive and absorb a human's emotions via emotional contagion, we expected that pet dogs of owners with higher job stress would themselves be more stressed. We anticipated that work-related rumination, or the tendency to continue thinking about work during leisure time, would explain this re

In this article, the authors focus on epidemic-assistance investigations that dealt with maternal and child health problems, including unintended and adolescent pregnancy and family planning; international reproductive health surveys among refugees; pregnancy outcomes, including abortion, maternal mortality, infant mortality, and birth defects; leukemia; and Reye syndrome. During 1946-2005, a total of 1,969 investigations had sufficient data to classify them as possibly related to maternal and child health and were characterized by distinctive periods. Those related to family planning, pregnan

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) were widely promoted in China during the family planning era and became a central contraceptive technology shaping women's reproductive experiences. Guided by the culture-centered approach, this study examines how contraceptive knowledge and bodily experiences related to the IUD are communicated across generations within families. Based on in-depth interviews with mothers and daughters, the study analyzes how structure, culture, and agency interact in shaping intergenerational health communication about IUDs. The findings show that state family planning policies and

Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disease characterized by both motor neuron and non-motor neuron symptoms, is the most frequent neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. Both genetic and environmental factors take part in disease etiology. Most cases are considered complex multifactorial diseases. About 15% of PD appear in the familial form, and about 5% of all cases arise from a single gene mutation. Among Mendelian causes of PD, PARK7 is one of the autosomal recessive forms due to loss-of-function mutations in both gene alleles. Both single nucleotide variants (SNVs)

Background: Familial dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a monogenic disorder typically inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. We have identified two Finnish families with familial cardiomyopathy that is not explained by a variant in any previously known cardiomyopathy gene. We describe the cardiac phenotype related to homozygous truncating GCOM1 variants. Methods and Results: This study included two probands and their relatives. All the participants are of Finnish ethnicity. Whole-exome sequencing was used to test the probands; bi-directional Sanger sequencing was used to identify the GCOM1

INTRODUCTION: Prematurity is associated with severe clinical conditions, long hospital stays, and uncertainty about patient outcomes. These circumstances lead to a stressful situation that may affect family functioning. The aim of this study was to study risk and protection factors affecting family functioning in preterm as compared to healthy term infants.
POPULATION AND METHODS: Preterm infants with and without pathological conditions (n=40) were recruited at 24 months post-conception age, together with a control group of healthy term newborn infants (n=31). Parents or usual caregivers resp

Emerging evidence suggests that fathers, more so than mothers, socialize emotions in a gender-stereotyped manner. Gender-stereotyped emotion socialization may be particularly pronounced in men perpetrating intimate partner violence (IPV), and may be detrimental to child adjustment, particularly for boys. This study explored the relation between fathers' socialization of children's emotions and child adjustment in families where IPV is present. We hypothesized that in families where there is IPV, fathers' awareness of their children's sadness and fear will be associated with negative child outc

This article discusses the successful process used to assess the feasibility of implementing the Family Matters program in Bangkok, Thailand. This is important work since adopting and adapting evidence-based programs is a strategy currently endorsed by leading prevention funding sources, particularly in the United States. The original Family Matters consists of four booklets designed to increase parental communication with their adolescent children in order to delay onset of or decrease alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. As part of the program, health educators contact parents by telephone

Omphalocele is a relatively common developmental anomaly of the abdominal wall. Isolated omphalocele is generally regarded as a sporadic malformation with a negligible recurrence risk, although rare familial occurrences have been reported, compatible with AD, AR and XLR inheritance. Omphaloceles occurring in a syndromal context are strongly correlated with various types of chromosomal anomalies. Few monogenic syndromes have a high frequency of omphalocele. We report a family with facial dysmorphism somewhat reminiscent of Robinow syndrome (flat face, very short, upturned nose, very long and un

INTRODUCTION: Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by asymptomatic and non-progressive hypercalcemia due to mutations of the calcium-sensing receptor gene. Disorders of calcium metabolism are very common in the elderly, and they can coexist with familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia in affected families.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe an Irish family with hypercalcemia and hypocalciuria. The proband, an 80-year-old Irish woman, presented with hypercalcemia, relative hypocalciuria, and an elevated parathormone level. She also had chronic kidne

Pediculosis is a common infestation in schoolchildren but little is known about the factors influencing its prevalence. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of head lice in schoolchildren in Ghent and to investigate the independent association between individual characteristics of the child, socio-economic status (SES) of the family and head lice. The prevalence of head lice at baseline and 14 days after treatment advice was determined by the wet combing method in a total of 6,169 schoolchildren age 2.5 to 12 years from Ghent (Belgium).
