Physical activity and sedentary time in persons with obstructive sleep apnea and overweight enrolled in a randomized controlled trial for enhanced physical activity and healthy eating.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to describe the amount of physical activity and sedentary time in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and overweight and to explore potential disease-related and psychological correlates. METHODS: A descriptive and correlational study was performed. Prospective data of physical activity and sedentary time were collected through accelerometry, and body mass index (BMI), daytime sleepiness, exercise self-efficacy, fear of movement, and depressive symptoms were measured at one point. Seventy-three participants with overweight (mean BMI, 35 k

Lower levels of cannabinoid 1 receptor mRNA in female eating disorder patients: association with wrist cutting as impulsive self-injurious behavior.

The cannabinoid 1 (CB 1) receptor as the primary mediator of the endocannabinoid (EC) system was found to play a role in eating disorders (EDs), depression, anxiety, and suicidal behavior. The CB 1 receptor is assumed to play a crucial role in the central reward circuitry with impact on body weight and personality traits like novelty-seeking behavior. In a previous study we found higher levels of CB 1 receptor mRNA in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) compared to healthy control women (HCW). The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible influence of th

Exercise caution: over-exercise is associated with suicidality among individuals with disordered eating.

We conducted four studies to examine the relationship between over-exercise and suicidality. Study 1 investigated whether over-exercise predicted suicidal behavior after controlling for other eating disorder behaviors in a patient sample of 204 women (144 with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition (DSM-IV) Bulimia Nervosa [BN]). Study 2 tested the prospective association between over-exercise and acquired capability for suicide (ACS) in a sample of 171 college students followed for 3-4 weeks. Study 3 investigated whether pain insensitivity accounted for the relatio

Clozapine chronically suppresses alcohol drinking in Syrian golden hamsters.

Alcohol use disorder is common in patients with schizophrenia and is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Preliminary reports from our group and others suggest that the atypical antipsychotic clozapine may decrease alcohol use in these patients. We have previously shown that clozapine suppresses alcohol consumption for 9 days in Syrian golden hamsters. Here, we assessed the effects of clozapine on alcohol consumption in hamsters over a 27-day period, using a continuous access, 2-bottle (15% alcohol vs. water) protocol. Clozapine (4, 8, or 12 mg/kg/day, injected subcutaneously [s.c.]) dose-d

Sibutramine & naloxone: infra-additive interaction in the regulation of appetite?

Sibutramine is one of a small number of clinically approved anti-obesity agents while naloxone not only has intrinsic anorectic efficacy but, in low doses, also produces additive/synergistic anorectic effects in combination with other compounds. In view of the potential advantages of drug polytherapy over conventional monotherapy, the present study explored the effects of acute low dose combinations of sibutramine (0.125, 0.25 mg/kg) and naloxone (0.1 mg/kg) on food intake, feeding and non-feeding behaviour, and post-treatment weight gain in male rats. Neither drug, alone or in combination, si

Snakes as agents of evolutionary change in primate brains.

Current hypotheses that use visually guided reaching and grasping to explain orbital convergence, visual specialization, and brain expansion in primates are open to question now that neurological evidence reveals no correlation between orbital convergence and the visual pathway in the brain that is associated with reaching and grasping. An alternative hypothesis proposed here posits that snakes were ultimately responsible for these defining primate characteristics. Snakes have a long, shared evolutionary existence with crown-group placental mammals and were likely to have been their first pred

Omega-3 fatty acid status in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Lower levels of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, in blood have repeatedly been associated with a variety of behavioral disorders including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The exact nature of this relationship is not yet clear. We have studied children with ADHD who exhibited skin and thirst symptoms classically associated with essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency, altered plasma and red blood cell fatty acid profiles, and dietary intake patterns that do not differ significantly from controls. This led us to focus on a potential metabol

Differential dose effects of central CRF and effects of CRF astressin on pig behavior.

The elevation of central corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) causes an increase in behavioral activity, including increases in overall activity and oral/nasal/facial (ONF) chewing-rooting-rubbing behaviors in the pig and similar behaviors in other species. This study detailed changes in the frequency, duration and sequences of behaviors after central administration of vehicle or porcine CRF (pCRF at 0.5, 5.0, 50 and 150 microg). A sequential analysis described the complex behaviors induced in a dose-dependent fashion by central pCRF. The frequency and duration of ONF behaviors were significan

The influence of folate and multivitamin use on the familial risk of colon cancer in women.

Low intake of folate and methionine and heavy alcohol consumption have been associated with an increased overall risk of colon cancer, possibly related to their role in methylation pathways. We estimated the relative risk (RR) of colon cancer according to a history of colorectal cancer in a first-degree relative and categories of folate, methionine, and alcohol intake in a prospective cohort study of 88,758 women who completed family history and detailed food frequency questionnaires. During 16 years of follow-up, colon cancer was diagnosed in 535 women. The inverse association of folic acid w

The anorectic effect of SK&F 38393, a selective dopamine D1 receptor agonist: a microstructural analysis of feeding and related behaviour.

An observational study was undertaken to provide a microstructural analysis of the effects of the selective dopamine D1 receptor agonist, SK&F 38393, on feeding and associated behaviours in the rat. Adult, male non-deprived rats were adapted to eating a meal of sweetened mash in a 30-min period. SK&F 38393 (3.0 and 10 mg/kg, SC) significantly reduced food consumption). It also reduced the frequency of feeding bouts and the local rate of eating, while there was an increase, at 10 mg/kg, in the mean duration of individual feeding episodes. The D1 receptor agonist also reduced the total duration

Nutrition and current concepts of obesity.

Obesity is and has been one of the foremost health problems in the U.S. and in many other countries. It is so interrelated with different factors that it is very difficult to single out the effect of one particular aspect. However, an effort is made in this review to focus on obesity only from a nutritional point of view. Childhood nutrition and its impact on obesity is particularly emphasised since weight gain during early infancy has been associated with obesity in later stages of life. There is considerable evidence that links obesity with certain diseases of the cardiovascular system and d

Synaptic connectome of a neurosecretory network in the Drosophila brain.

Hormones mediate inter-organ signaling, which is crucial in orchestrating diverse behaviors and physiological processes, including sleep and activity, feeding, growth, metabolism, and reproduction. The pars intercerebralis and pars lateralis in insects represent major hubs that contain neurosecretory cells (NSCs) that produce various peptide hormones. To obtain insight into how hormonal signaling is regulated, we have characterized the synaptic connectome of NSCs in the adult Drosophila brain. Identification of neurons providing inputs to multiple NSC classes implicates diuretic hormone 44-exp

Soybean oil supplement induces increased approaching behavior to humans and alters serotonin concentrations in horses.

Enhancement of human-horse interaction is crucial for safety in equine management, as poor relationships between humans and horses can lead to accidents. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is highly related to social affinity in animals and several studies have been documented that supplementation of tryptophan, which is a precursor of serotonin, can increase calmness of horses. This study aimed to assess the effect of tryptophan through soybean oil supplementation on serotonin concentrations and the behavior of horses. Six horses participated and the horses were treated with or without soyb

Preclinical Parkinson's Disease Models for Non-Motor Symptoms: Research Recommendations from a Systematic Review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily characterized by motor impairments resulting from dopaminergic neuron degeneration in the substantia nigra. However, PD is increasingly recognized as a multisystem disorder, where non-motor symptoms such as cognitive impairment, mood disturbances, sleep disorders, and autonomic dysfunction significantly impact patients' quality of life. These non-motor symptoms often exhibit poor responsiveness to traditional dopaminergic therapies, underscoring a critical gap in current treatment strategies. Our systematic review i

Phyllanthus niruri L. Administration during pregnancy and breastfeeding: Maternal evaluation and effects on initial development and adult behavior of male rat offspring.

The leaves of Phyllanthus niruri L. are used in folk medicine in many countries to treat various diseases. However, despite the enormous therapeutic potential, use of the plant is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Reports on the impacts of exposure to this plant on the development of the offspring of rats are still scarce and controversial. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of the administration of P. niruri aqueous extract, during pregnancy and lactation, on maternal toxicity, on postnatal physical development, and on behavioral aspects in adult male offspring

Silent information regulator 1 mediates H 2 S-inhibited chronic restraint stress-induced depressive-like behaviors by regulating hippocampal autophagy.

OBJECTIVES: Our previous study has demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), a novel gasotransmitter, attenuates excessive autophagy and depressive-like behaviors in chronic restraint stress (CRS)-exposed rats, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains to be elucidated. Silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1), a deacetylase at the consumption of NAD+ plays an important regulatory role in depression. Hence, this study aimed to investigate whether SIRT1 mediates the protective effect of H 2 S on CRS-induced depressive-like behaviors by regulating hippocampal autophagy. METHODS: Adult male
