Use-dependent increase in attention to the prosthetic foot in patients with lower limb amputation.

Patients with lower limb amputation experience "embodiment" while using a prosthesis, perceiving it as part of their body. Humans control their biological body parts and receive appropriate information by directing attention toward them, which is called body-specific attention. This study investigated whether patients with lower limb amputation similarly direct attention to prosthetic limbs. The participants were 11 patients with lower limb amputation who started training to walk with a prosthesis. Attention to the prosthetic foot was measured longitudinally by a visual detection task. In the …

Adherence to at-Home Monitoring of Foot Temperatures in People with Diabetes at High Risk of Ulceration.

We aimed to investigate adherence to at-home monitoring of foot temperature and its association with patient-, disease- and behavior-related factors, in people with diabetes at high risk of ulceration. We analyzed 151 participants in the enhanced therapy arm of the DIATEMP trial (all at high diabetes-related foot ulcer risk) who aimed to perform and log foot temperatures daily for 18 months or until ulceration. Adherence was the proportion of measurement days covered (PDC), with being adherent defined as PDC≥70%. If a hotspot was recorded, adherence to subsequently reducing ambulatory activity…

Near infrared spectroscopy in peripheral artery disease and the diabetic foot: A systematic review.

With the need for tools that assess microvascular status in diabetic foot disease (DFD) being clear, near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a putative method for noninvasive testing of the diabetic foot. The use of NIRS in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) has extended to its role in studying the pathophysiology of DFD. NIRS generates metrics such as recovery time, deoxygenation, oxygen consumption (VO2 ), tissue oxygen saturation (StO2 ), total haemoglobin (HbT), and oxyhaemoglobin area under the curve (O2 HbAUC ). NIRS may potentially help the multidisciplinary team stratify limb…

[Collagen-based biological dressings in the treatment of chronic wounds in diabetic foot syndrome].

One of the end-organs of diabetes mellitus (DM) is the skin. Cellular and molecular disorders occurring in the skin due to chronic hyperglycemia, neuropathy, and micro- and macroangiopathy lead to poor-heling foot wounds in patients with diabetes. Consequently, treating wounds in diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) is prolonged, costly, and often ineffective. The research on wound healing and treating wounds in DM with stricter adherence to international guidelines and technological breakthroughs in developing biological materials provide new therapeutic opportunities to solve wound care problems. Co…

Surgical Treatment of Foot Drop: Pathophysiology and Tendon Transfers for Restoration of Motor Function.

Foot drop is a common condition that may impact physical function and health-related quality of life. A detailed clinical history and physical examination are critical components of the initial evaluation of patients presenting with foot drop. Patients with refractory foot drop without spontaneous recovery of motor deficits, delayed presentation greater than 12 months from injury, or neural lesions that are not amenable to or have failed nerve reconstruction may be candidates for tendon transfers to restore active ankle dorsiflexion. The modified Bridle procedure is a dynamic tendon transfer t…

Diversity of SAT2 foot-and-mouth disease virus in Sudan: implication for diagnosis and control.

Like other East African countries, Sudan experienced circulation of more than one topotype of SAT2 foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). In Sudan, topotype XIII of SAT2 virus was recorded in 1977 and 2008 and topotype VII in 2007, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2017. This work evaluated the impact of such diversity on diagnosis and control. After one or three doses of a vaccine derived from a Sudanese SAT2 virus of topotype VII originated in 2010, heterologous neutralizing antibody titres with Sudanese SAT2 viruses in 2008 were ≤ 1.2 log 10, not consistent with likely protection. Simultaneously, homologo…

Role of fibroblast plasticity and heterogeneity in modulating angiogenesis and healing in the diabetic foot ulcer.

Chronic diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are an important clinical issue faced by clinicians despite the advanced treatment strategies consisting of wound debridement, off-loading, medication, wound dressings, and keeping the ulcer clean. Non-healing DFUs are associated with the risk of amputation, increased morbidity and mortality, and economic stress. Neo-angiogenesis and granulation tissue formation are necessary for physiological DFU healing and acute inflammation play a key role in healing. However, chronic inflammation in association with diabetic complications holds the ulcer in the inflamma…

Biomechanical Risks Associated with Foot and Ankle Injuries in Ballet Dancers: A Systematic Review.

Professional ballet dancers can be classified as dance artists and sports performers. This systematic review aims to consider the biomechanical risk factors for foot and ankle injuries in ballet dancers, as this could potentially reduce the impact that 'cost of injury' may have on ballet companies. An additional outcome was to examine the effects of injury on the career of ballet dancers. This study searched articles in four electronic databases for information in peer-reviewed journals. The included articles examined the relationships between biomechanical factors and the relationship between…
