Epidemiology and Characteristics of Ankle and Foot Injuries in Electric Scooter-Related Accidents.

BACKGROUND: The use of electric scooters (e-scooters) continues to increase as a simple, inexpensive means of transport, resulting in a sharp increase in the incidence of scooter-related accidents. No study to date has closely examined the injury extent to the lower leg, joints, and extremities from e-scooter-related accidents. Here, we investigated the epidemiology and injury patterns of such accidents, focusing on injuries to the ankle and foot. METHODS: Based on data from a single tertiary hospital's database, the demographics of 563 patients with scooter-associated injuries were analyzed

Free tissue transfer to the traumatized upper extremity: Risk factors for postoperative complications in 282 cases.

BACKGROUND: Complex traumatic upper extremity injuries frequently possess compromised local vasculature or extensive defects that are not amenable to local flap reconstruction. Free tissue transfer is required to provide adequate soft tissue coverage. The present study aimed to evaluate risk factors that contribute to postoperative complications and flap loss in complex upper extremity reconstruction. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed for all patients undergoing free tissue transfer for upper extremity reconstruction from 1976 to 2001. Data collected included patient demograph

Performance of risk assessment instruments for predicting osteoporotic fracture risk: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: We systematically reviewed the literature on the performance of osteoporosis absolute fracture risk assessment instruments. Relatively few studies have evaluated the calibration of instruments in populations separate from their development cohorts, and findings are mixed. Many studies had methodological limitations making susceptibility to bias a concern. INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature on the performance of osteoporosis clinical fracture risk assessment instruments for predicting absolute fracture risk, or calibration, in population

A Novel Physeal-Sparing Fixation Technique for Tibial Eminence Fractures in Paediatric Patients.

Introduction Tibial eminence fractures are common knee injuries in paediatric patients. They are an uncommon cause of knee injury that is associated with effusion, and most frequently present in the paediatric population. These injuries affect knee stability. Surgical management is challenging and associated with risks and complications due to the direct relation to the proximal tibial growth plate. We developed a new physeal-sparing technique to fix these fractures while avoiding any violation of the proximal tibial growth plate. Materials and methods This new technique involves transfixing t

Open fracture of the tibia in children.

The records of eighty-three children who had had an open fracture of the tibial metaphysis or diaphysis between January 1983 and July, 1993 were studied retrospectively. The average duration of follow-up was fourteen months (range, two to seventy-five months). There were twenty-four grade-I, forty grade-II, thirteen grade-IIIA, six grade-IIIB, and no grade-IIIC fractures, according to the classification scheme of Gustilo et al. Sixty patients (72 per cent) had sustained the fracture when they were struck by an automobile, and forty-eight patients (58 per cent) had other associated major injuri

Opioid versus Non-Opioid Postoperative Pain Management for Pediatric Supracondylar Humerus Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Opioid misuse is a leading cause of unintentional adolescent injury. Prescribing opioids for postoperative pain management in pediatric supracondylar humerus fracture fixation is controversial. This study compares opioid pain medication versus non-opioid pain medication use in outpatient pain control after such fixation. METHODS: This retrospective review involved subjects <18 years old who underwent closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP) of Gartland type II-IV supracondylar humerus fractures. Two cohorts received differing postoperative pain control: opioid medication a

Acute celiac artery occlusion secondary to blunt trauma: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Acute celiac artery (CA) injuries are extremely rare but potentially life-threatening and are more often caused by a penetrating injury rather than a blunt injury. The clinical manifestation of CA injuries is usually atypical, which easily causes missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis. Currently, there are only a few reports of acute traumatic occlusion of CA. The CA artery gives off branches to dominate the liver, stomach. and spleen; however, occluded CA did not cause significant organ ischemia, and the compensatory blood flow from the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) played a pivotal

Factors influencing surgical management of proximal humerus fractures: do shoulder and trauma surgeons differ?

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are managed with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), hemiarthroplasty (HA), reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA), or nonoperatively. Given the mixed results in the literature, the optimal treatment is unclear to surgeons. The purpose of this study was to survey orthopedic shoulder and trauma surgeons to identify the patient- and fracture-related characteristics that influence surgical decision-making. METHODS: We distributed a 23-question closed-response email survey to members of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and Orthopaedic Tr

Epidemiology of traumatic head injuries in Sweden during 2008-2022.

Traumatic head injuries, including fractures and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), are primarily caused by falls and road traffic accidents (RTAs). Since the introduction of the Vision Zero policy in Sweden in 1997, falls have overtaken RTAs as the main cause of traumatic head injuries. This study aimed to estimate national injury rates of fractures and TBIs in both inpatient and outpatient specialised care in Sweden from 2008 to 2022. Data from the Swedish National Patient Register from 2008 to 2022 were stratified by external cause, sex, age, and injury (fractures and TBIs). Changes over time

Enamel-like Polymer-Infiltrated Ceramic Materials for Dental Applications.

Polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) composites are recognized for their mechanical properties, closely resembling natural tooth enamel. However, the low fracture toughness of current PICN materials limits their broader use. This study draws inspiration from the natural enamel rod-sheath architecture to develop bionic PICN composites with an enamel-like structure, enhancing their fracture toughness for dental restorations. By simulating the morphology and arrangement of enamel rods, 3 types of zirconia ceramic scaffolds were designed and manufactured by digital light processing technolog

The effect of calf muscular vein thrombosis on the prognosis within one year postoperatively of geriatric hip fracture patients: a propensity score-matched analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Calf muscular vein thrombosis (CMVT) is a type of distal deep vein thrombosis, which is common in geriatric hip fracture patients. However, studies focusing on whether the orthopedic operation has an impact on the prognosis of geriatric hip fracture patients with CMVT are very limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore whether geriatric hip fractures with CMVT affect the mortality of patients within one year postoperatively. The difficulty of the operation, postoperative complications, the status of thrombosis, and function scores were also compared. MATERIALS AND
