Language function shows comparable cortical patterns by functional MRI and repetitive nTMS in healthy volunteers.

In preoperative planning, fMRI and repetitive navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) repeatedly revealed differences in the dete … tial agreement between several rTMS-spots (2/3 and 3/3 errors) and fMRI clusters accentuated in the frontal lobe, followed by the parietal lobe and less in the temporal lobe. Compared to the fMRI clusters, there was a higher congruence for 2/3 and 3/3 errors than for 1/3 errors. Overall, results of language mapping in healthy subjects by fMRI and rTMS correspo …

[Two cases of elderly patients with ruptured AVM with contrast medium extravasation during cerebral angiography].

Two cases are reported of elderly patients who experienced intracranial extravasation of contrast medium (CM) during carotid angiography (CAG) for ruptured cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM). The first patient, an 87-year-old male with no history of hypertension, was admitted immediately following a loss of consciousness after swimming in a pool. CT scan revealed a large intracranial hematoma in the left frontal lobe. CAG performed 1 hour after his arrival revealed a small AVM, fed by the left anterior cerebral artery with concomitant extravasation of CM. The patient's condition subseq…

Lesion and lesion network localization of dysnomia after epilepsy surgery.

Temporal lobe epilepsy surgery is an effective treatment option for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. However, neurosurgery poses a risk for cognitive deficits-up to one-third of patients have a decline in naming ability following temporal lobe surgery. In this study, we aimed to better understand the neural correlates associated with reduced naming performance after temporal lobe surgery, with the goal of informing surgical planning strategies to mitigate the risk of dysnomia. We retrospectively identified 85 patients who underwent temporal lobe resective surgery (49 left temporal lobe,

Effects of heavy drinking, binge drinking, and family history of alcoholism on regional brain metabolites.

BACKGROUND: The main goals are to investigate the effects of chronic active heavy drinking on N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and other metabolites throughout the brain and to determine whether they are affected by family history (FH) of alcoholism and long-term drinking pattern. METHODS: Forty-six chronic heavy drinkers (HD) and 52 light drinkers (LD) were recruited from the community and compared on measures of regional brain structure using magnetic resonance imaging and measures of common brain metabolites in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) of the major lobes, subcortical nuclei, brainstem

Transformer Mechanisms Mimic Frontostriatal Gating Operations When Trained on Human Working Memory Tasks.

Working memory (WM) is thought to rely on sophisticated frontostriatal mechanisms for selective gating, supporting updating and readout of information to and from distinct memory "addresses" (neural populations). According to computational models, capacity limitations in WM arise due to challenges in "role addressability": learning to correctly bind items in memory to their respective roles and assigning credit to the corresponding gating operations. However, these conclusions are based on particular assumptions about biological neural networks, and it is unclear whether the principles general

Reduced task-induced frontal midline theta activity in chronic stroke patients compared to healthy older adults - An MEG study.

Frontal midline theta (FMΘ) is a well-established neural marker of cognitive control, generated predominantly in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). While reduced theta power has been reported in stroke using EEG, little is known about task-induced FMΘ and its sources in healthy older adults and stroke patients. Understanding FMΘ dynamics is crucial for characterizing post-stroke changes in the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive control and may aid the development of targeted neuromodulation approaches. In this exploratory study, seventeen healthy older adults and ten chronic ischemic str

Neural underpinnings of thematic and taxonomic processing in indirect semantic priming: evidence from the N400 and frontal negativity.

BACKGROUND: Semantic memory includes knowledge of specific categories and their diverse semantic relations, yet the neural mechanisms underlying thematic and taxonomic semantic processing remain controversial. METHODS: We explored the neural correlates of thematic and taxonomic processing via ERP in a lexical decision task. In this task, brand names served as primes, and the extension products served as targets. Five experimental conditions were compared: the core–product condition (e.g., Boeing–airliner), taxonomic condition (Boeing–helicopter), thematic condition (Boeing–suitcase), unrelated

Toward convenient depression detection using two non-hair-bearing frontal EEG channels.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorder (DD) is a prevalent mental illness with substantial impacts on emotional, cognitive, and physical functioning. The diagnosis of DD however is heavily relying on subjective assessments. Although some exploratory works proposed objective detection methods based upon EEG signals, the widely-used high-density setup significantly limits its practicability and convenience. METHODS: Here, we introduced an analysis framework for convenient DD detection using EEG data recorded at two non-hair-bearing (NHB) frontal channels (Fp1 and Fp2) from 80 participants (controls/pa

Revised cytoarchitectonic mapping of the human premotor cortex identifies seven areas and refines the localisation of frontal eye fields.

The premotor cortex is involved in a variety of motor and cognitive functions that often cannot be unambiguously linked to its microstructural correlates. We re-analysed the cytoarchitecture of this region in ten post mortem brains using an observer-independent mapping approach. Seven areas (6d1-6d3, 6v1-6v3, 6r1) were identified. Based on their cytoarchitectonic similarity, they were grouped into three dorsal (6d1-3) and four ventral (6v1-3, 6r1) premotor areas, supporting the concept of a functionally distinct dorsal and ventral premotor cortex. The superior frontal sulcus was identified as

Awake surgery and music: Two illustrative cases of frontal resection in pianists.

Functional anatomy underlyng music perception and production has been quite abundantly described in literature, together with some examples of musical tasks adopted during awake surgery. We have used a keyboard-playing test for per-operative monitoring of two patients affected by a glial lesion. Our two cases differ in age, lateralization and hemispheric localization of the lesion. One of them, who presented a left middle frontal gyrus lesion, showed a decrease in his ability to play piano, together with other neurological abnormalities, from which he completely recovered within a year. The ot

Optimizing Surgical Planning for Epilepsy Patients With Multimodal Neuroimaging and Neurophysiology Integration: A Case Study.

Current preoperative evaluation of epilepsy can be challenging because of the lack of a comprehensive view of the network's dysfunctions. To demonstrate the utility of our multimodal neurophysiology and neuroimaging integration approach in the presurgical evaluation, we present a proof-of-concept for using this approach in a patient with nonlesional frontal lobe epilepsy who underwent two resective surgeries to achieve seizure control. We conducted a post-hoc investigation using four neuroimaging and neurophysiology modalities: diffusion tensor imaging, resting-state functional MRI, and stereo…

A role for immunohistochemical stains in perinatal brain autopsies.

Identification of central nervous system injury is a critical part of perinatal autopsies; however, injury is not always easily identifiable due to autolysis and immaturity of the developing brain. Here, the role of immunohistochemical stains in the identification of perinatal brain injury was investigated. Blinded semiquantitative scoring of injury was performed on sections of frontal lobe from 76 cases (51 liveborn and 25 stillborn) using H&E, GFAP, Iba-1, and β-APP stains. Digital image analysis was used to quantify GFAP and Iba-1 staining. Commonly observed pathologies included diffuse whi…

Alternate Electrode Placements to Facilitate Frontal Electroencephalography Monitoring in Anesthetized and Critically Ill Patients.

BACKGROUND: Frontal electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring can be useful in guiding the titration of anesthetics, but it is not always feasible to place electrodes in the standard configuration in some circumstances, including during neurosurgery. This study compares 5 alternate configurations of the Masimo Sedline Sensor. METHODS: Ten stably sedated patients in the intensive care unit were recruited. Frontal EEG was monitored in the standard configuration (bifrontal upright) and 5 alternate configurations: bifrontal inverse, infraorbital, lateral upright, lateral inverse, and semilateral. A

Resting Frontal Gamma Power is Associated with Both Expressive Language and Non-verbal Cognitive Abilities in Young Autistic Children.

Previous research links resting frontal gamma power to key developmental outcomes in young neurotypical (NT) children and infants at risk for language impairment. However, it remains unclear whether gamma power is specifically associated with language or with more general cognitive abilities among young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The current study evaluates differences in resting frontal gamma power between young autistic and NT children and tests whether gamma power is uniquely associated with individual differences in expressive language, receptive language and n

Stimulation of caudal inferior and middle frontal gyri disrupts planning during spoken interaction.

Turn-taking is a central feature of conversation across languages and cultures.1,2,3,4 This key social behavior requires numerous sensorimotor and cognitive operations1,5,6 that can be organized into three general phases: comprehension of a partner's turn, preparation of a speaker's own turn, and execution of that turn. Using intracranial electrocorticography, we recently demonstrated that neural activity related to these phases is functionally distinct during turn-taking.7 In particular, networks active during the perceptual and articulatory stages of turn-taking consisted of structures known
