Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA), also known as pachydermoperiostosis is an unusual cause of digital clubbing. It is a rare osteo-arthro-dermopathic syndrome which is associated with clubbing of fingers, thickening of skin in the face and scalp, seborrhea, and subperiosteal new bone genesis. It is divided into two types: Primary (PHOA) and secondary HOA, with the latter being common. PHOA accounts for a very meager portion of HOA cases. PHOA is usually inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion and rarely follows autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. We report a case of a male who presen

We were interested in this work to make a comparison between the protective effect of the ethanolic extract of Urtica urens L. (UU) and the effect of the bisphosphonate (BP) against osteoporosis induced in rats by intraperitoneal (IP) and oral (gavage) administration. The female rats were ovariectomized to cause osteoporosis. Several biological, histological, and histomorphometric analyses were used to study bone development. The results indicate that the EtOH extract of UU has a positive effect against osteoporosis for both routes of administration (IP and gavage). This effect could be attrib

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB primarily affects the lungs. A small percentage of cases are associated with extrapulmonary TB (EPTB). Of all EPTB, skeletal TB accounts for 1-5% of the cases, with the vertebrae being the most commonly affected. Involvement of the hands usually occurs in children under the age of six, with the bones of the proximal phalanx of the middle and index fingers being the most reported sites of infection. We describe a case of disseminated TB presenting as swelling in the index finger. Due to its nonspecif

Distal phalanx osteomyelitis, although rare, represents a challenging infection that can have devastating functional and cosmetic consequences if inadequately managed. In patients with comorbidities-most notably diabetes mellitus-the infection may progress rapidly, causing bone destruction, soft tissue involvement, and ultimately, joint destruction. This review discusses the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and surgical management of distal phalanx osteomyelitis. It also highlights key gaps in the current literature, particularly the lack of standardized treatment protocols and limited long-term ou

Pneumatization of the articular eminence (PAE) and pneumatization of the glenoid fossa (PGF) refer to the presence of air cells in the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, according to their location. These air cells are asymptomatic and do not necessitate treatment; however, their identification is crucial in specific situations, particularly during temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic efficacy of panoramic radiography in detecting PAE compared to cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The study included 400 individuals who underwent pano

Chalicotheres are bizarre extinct herbivore mammals closely related to today's rhinoceroses, tapirs and horses. The family Chalicotheriidae includes two subfamilies, the Chalicotheriinae and the Schizotheriinae. Some members of the schizotheriines form a duplex bone by fusing the proximal and the medial phalanges of the second digit of the hand. Here, we report the only known fused set of proximal and medial phalanges in a specimen of the subfamily Chalicotheriinae from the Late Miocene of Höwenegg in Germany. This specimen has been the center of some confusion regarding its identity and the n

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculous (TB) dactylitis (spina ventosa) is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis involving the short tubular bones of the hands and feet, primarily in children. Due to its non-specific presentation, the diagnosis is often delayed.
CASE REPORT: We report a rare case of bilateral spina ventosa in a 6-year-old girl who presented with progressive painful swelling of both middle and ring fingers. Diagnosis was confirmed by cartridge-based nucleic acid amplification test, erythrocyte sedimentation rate elevation, positive Mantoux test, and histopathology revealing epithelioid

Primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma (PCAC) is an exceptionally rare cutaneous malignancy originating from apocrine glands, occurring most commonly in the axilla and anogenital regions. It typically follows a slow-growing clinical course, although aggressive behavior has been documented in select cases. While local recurrence and regional metastasis are not uncommon in PCAC, instances of distant metastases are rare, with only a handful of cases reported, including involvement of the liver, bone, and lung. We present a unique case of PCAC with pagetoid features arising in the groin and metastas

Neuropathies and myopathies have long been studied separately, with little or no overlap described between the two entities. However, the advent of high-throughput molecular biology over the past 20 years led to the discovery of mutations in the same gene causing hereditary myopathies and neuropathies. While this overlap is well known for mitochondrial genes, it is more unexpected for genes such as BAG3, DES, and CRYAB, which are mutated both in myofibrillar myopathies and in neuropathies that may be isolated or associated with muscle phenotypes. More recently, genes involved in multisystemic

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) typically manifests as one or more chronic, non-healing skin ulcers, often with raised borders and central necrosis, accompanied by erythema. These lesions are most commonly seen on exposed areas. However, the clinical presentation of CL can vary based on factors such as the Leishmania species, the host's immune response, and the region of infection. Biopsy typically confirms the diagnosis of CL by identifying amastigotes, the intracellular form of the parasite, in tissue samples. However, there are rare instances where a biopsy fails to detect the amastigotes, res

An 83-year-old man with a history of monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance, macrocytic anemia, and cytopenias presented with hemorrhagic bullae on his left hand, alongside intermittent fevers and joint pain. Laboratory findings indicated anemia, elevated mean corpuscular volume, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and a high C-reactive protein level. A biopsy of the bullae showed neutrophilic dermatosis, and computed tomography scans of the thorax revealed lung opacities and mediastinal lymphadenopathy, suggesting neutrophilic alveolitis. Bone marrow examination found hypercellularity with m

We describe a modified metaphyseal ulnar osteotomy to treat ulnar impaction syndrome with a reverse oblique sigmoid notch. Based on a computational analysis of radiographs, a modified wedge metaphyseal ulnar osteotomy was devised with its apex positioned at the ulnar styloid base to avoid impaction between the sigmoid notch and ulnar head. Subsequently, nine patients with ulnar impaction syndrome and a reverse oblique sigmoid notch underwent this operation, combined with arthroscopic exploration and transosseous triangular fibrocartilage complex repair. The mean follow-up was 14 months. All pa

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the regional variation in areal bone mineral density (aBMD) at the distal radius, a critical site for osteoporosis-related fractures. Understanding aBMD distribution is essential for accurate diagnosis and management of osteoporosis.
METHODS: The study involved 261 participants aged over 50. Using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans, aBMD was recorded across contiguous regions of the distal radius. Factors considered include age, sex, and hand dominance, providing a comprehensive view of aBMD distribution.
RESULTS: The findings indicated a consist

Stapedotomy or stapedectomy operations are often performed to treat otosclerosis. During the operation, the space created by bone removal is usually filled with a closing material such as fat or fascia. In this study, the effect of the Young's modulus of the closing material on the hearing level was investigated through the 3D finite element model of a human head including auditory periphery. The Young's moduli of the closing material used to implement stapedotomy and stapedectomy conditions in the model were varied from 1 kPa to 24 MPa. The results showed that the hearing level improved when

The thalassaemias are a group of genetic disorders of haemoglobin which are endemic in the tropics but are now found worldwide due to migration. Basic standard of care therapy includes regular transfusions to maintain a haemoglobin level of around 10 g/dL, together with iron chelation therapy to prevent iron overload. Novel therapies, bone marrow transplantation, and gene therapy are treatment options that are unavailable in many countries with stressed economies. This Wider Perspectives article presents the strategies for management of an adolescent refugee patient with beta thalassaemia, as

In day-to-day practice pediatric orthopedic surgeons often come up against the question of sport. The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between sport and childhood, with 3 questions: (1) What are the benefits of sport for children? (2) How to manage high-level child athletes? And (3) What sports are possible after major orthopedic surgery? Sports provide many benefits for children, and are to be encouraged. Sixty minutes' moderate to intense physical activity per day benefits motor development and bone mineralization and reduces the risk of obesity. On the other hand, ex

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this research is to study the modified surgical effect of Wassel type III radial polydactyly thumbs of equal or nearly equal size treated.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 12 reconstructed cases of Wassel type III radial polydactyly. The proximal phalanx was unequally combined by the curvature osteotomy and aligned the articular surface, and the distal phalanx was symmetrically combined. A fragment bone was filled in the depression of the distal phalanx to correct nail curvature and prevent seagull deformities. Twelve cases were available for assessment using

Mast cells (MCs) play a critical role in oral allergen-induced anaphylaxis. However, the contribution of basophils to the anaphylaxis remains unclear. The inhibitory immunoreceptor Allergin-1 is highly expressed on MCs and basophils and inhibits FcεRI-mediated signaling in MCs. Here, we show that Allergin-1-deficient (Milr1-/-) mice developed more severe hypothermia, a higher mortality rate and a greater incidence of diarrhea than did wild-type (WT) mice in an oral ovalbumin (OVA)-induced food allergy model. MC-deficient Mas-TRECK mice, which had been reconstituted with either WT or Milr1-/- b
