Factors that influence acute malnutrition detection and treatment by community health promoters in Samburu and Turkana counties, Kenya: A mixed methods study.

Global acute malnutrition (GAM) among children <5 years contributes to mortality and is a persistent problem in the drylands of Africa, including Samburu and Turkana Counties in Kenya, due to recurring droughts and other factors. In 2023, GAM prevalence was 20.3% in Samburu and 34.8% in Turkana, far exceeding the emergency threshold of 15%. Community health promoters (CHPs) are frontline members of the community health system who work with families to detect, treat, and refer acute malnutrition cases, but little is known about factors associated with these tasks. We conducted a mixed-method st

Implementing SARS-CoV-2 routine surveillance in antenatal care in Zambia, 2021-2022: best practices and lessons learned.

BACKGROUND: In Zambia, the true extent of SARS-CoV-2 infections is unknown because initial surveillance focused on patients with symptoms or severe disease. Antenatal sentinel surveillance had not been used to assess infection trends. The ANC COVID-19 surveillance study sought to determine SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and COVID-19 vaccine uptake among pregnant women. We provide insight into the study implementation, challenges encountered, best practices, and lessons learned. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional seroprevalence survey was implemented at 39 health facilities in four districts from

ARBOR-Telehealth study: an examination of telerehabilitation to improve function and reduce opioid use in persons with chronic low back pain in rural communities - protocol of a pragmatic, individually randomised group treatment trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain (LBP) imposes significant burden on patients, healthcare systems and society. Physical therapy is a cost-effective method for improving pain and disability; however, only a small number of patients (7-13%) with LBP ever receive physical therapy services. Patients report obstacles to accessing physical therapy, such as transportation, provider availability and missed work. Access is especially limited in rural communities, where approximately 40% fewer physical therapists are available per capita than in metropolitan regions. This lack of access likely contri

Financial hardship screening among Native American patients with cancer: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related financial hardship is an increasingly recognized concern for patients, families, and caregivers. Many Native American (NA) patients are at increased risk for cancer-related financial hardship due to high prevalence of low income, medical comorbidity, and lack of private health insurance. However, financial hardship screening (FHS) implementation for NA patients with cancer has not been reported. The objective of this study is to explore facilitators and barriers to FHS implementation for NA patients. METHODS: We conducted key informant interviews with NA patients wi

Barriers of Visceral Leishmaniasis reporting and surveillance in Nepal: comparison of governmental VL-program districts with non-program districts.

OBJECTIVES: At the time when Nepal is on the verge of reaching the maintenance phase of the Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) elimination program, the country is facing new challenges. The disease has expanded to 61 of the country's 75 districts including previously non-endemic areas where there is no control or patient management program in place. This study aimed to assess which elements of the surveillance and reporting systems need strengthening to identify cases at an early stage, prevent further transmission and ensure sustained VL elimination. METHODS: In a cross-sectional mixed-method study

Distribution of hepatitis B virus infection in Namibia.

BACKGROUND: Namibia regards hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection as a public health problem and introduced hepatitis B vaccinations for infants during 2009. However, information on HBV infection in the country remains limited, and effective public health interventions may be compromised in the absence of adequate evidence-based data. Available data from the World Health Organization (WHO) estimate that 15 - 60% of the normal population in many African countries may be positive for one or more of the HBV serological markers. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of HBV infection in Namibia,

EDC-2: The Endocrine Society's Second Scientific Statement on Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals.

The Endocrine Society's first Scientific Statement in 2009 provided a wake-up call to the scientific community about how environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) affect health and disease. Five years later, a substantially larger body of literature has solidified our understanding of plausible mechanisms underlying EDC actions and how exposures in animals and humans-especially during development-may lay the foundations for disease later in life. At this point in history, we have much stronger knowledge about how EDCs alter gene-environment interactions via physiological, cellular, m

The association of short-term effects of air pollution and sleep disorders among elderly residents in China.

Sleep disorders, oftentimes co-occurring with other mental and neurological disorders in the elderly, have been previously linked to short-term exposures to air pollution. Here we assessed such associations among 395,651 elderly Chinese in Ningbo, China where air pollution exposures are high and the proportion of elderly in the population is growing. We utilized a regional health information database in China (2008-2017) that collected information on hospital visits for sleep disorders among the elderly (age 60+). Measures of daily air pollution concentrations including nitrogen dioxide (NO2),
