The Effect of Educational Interventions on Willingness to Work with Older Adults: A Comparison of Students of Social Work and Health Professions.

The study examined the effect of an educational intervention on the willingness of Israeli social work students to work with older adults, comparing them to students of nursing, speech therapy, and physiotherapy. A sample of 187 first-year students were divided into two groups: a research group (n=83) exposed to an educational intervention on ageing, and a control group (n=104) that received no intervention of any kind. Following the intervention, ageism among social work students in the research group decreased and positive behavior toward older adults increased. No significant differences we

Social marketing including financial incentive programs at worksite cafeterias for preventing obesity: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: As with food-taxation strategies, such interventions as discounted healthy menus, point-of-purchase advertisements, and sugar-free beverages for employees at worksites could help prevent obesity. This study assessed the effectiveness of food environment interventions incorporating financial incentive or social marketing strategies at workplace cafeterias, vending machines, and kiosks toward preventing obesity and improving dietary habits. METHODS: We conducted searches on CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases. The study designs included were randomized control t

Curb Heroin In Plants (C.H.I.P.): Revisiting a Mid-1970s Intervention Into Workplace Heroin Addiction Created and Led by Detroit Autoworkers.

This article analyzes archival records to revisit Curb Heroin In Plants (C.H.I.P.), a public health intervention focusing on drug dependence that was created and led by Detroit, Michigan, autoworkers during the mid-1970s. Responding to widespread heroin use in Detroit auto plants, C.H.I.P. combined methadone maintenance with counseling on and off the job to treat heroin dependence while supporting autoworkers in continuing in employment and family life. Although C.H.I.P. ultimately failed, it was a promising attempt to transcend medical/punitive approaches and treat those with substance use di

Evaluation of aggression in Australian after-hours doctor home-visit services.

RATIONALE, AIMS, AND OBJECTIVES: Minimizing the risks and distress arising from aggression in after-hours house call (AHHC) services will help improve service quality in the industry. Unfortunately, no national study has ever evaluated this in Australian AHHCs. Apart from reducing this gap, findings from this work will have global relevance given the rising popularity of the AHHC industry worldwide. METHODS: A survey of all 300 doctors employed by the National Home Doctor Service, Australia's largest AHHC service provider. A validated electronic questionnaire was used to examine the doctors'

The provision of workplace accommodations following cancer: survivor, provider, and employer perspectives.

PURPOSE: With improvements in screening, diagnosis, and treatment, the number of persons surviving cancer and staying at or returning to work is increasing. While workplace accommodations optimize workers' abilities to participate in the workforce, there has been little in-depth investigation of the types of accommodations reported to have been provided to cancer survivors and the processes relevant to ensuring their successful implementation. METHODS: We employed an exploratory qualitative method and conducted 40 semi-structured interviews with three groups: (i) cancers survivors (n = 16), (

[Robotic-enhanced percutaneous coronary revascularization].

Percutaneous revascularization (PCI) has made significant technological progress in the last four decades. Despite advances in the safety and efficacy of the coronary revascularization, interventional cardiologists have to cope with occupational hazards including exposure to radiation, cataract, and orthopedic problems. Robotic systems that enable distant navigation were developed to address the risks and challenges that are associated with percutaneous revascularization. The PRECISE multi-center study with robotic-enhanced PCI demonstrated technical success of 98.7% and clinical success of 97

Types of intensive care units with the healthiest, most productive work environments.

BACKGROUND: The quality of nurses' work environments in hospitals is of great concern. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses has specified 6 standards essential to a healthy (ie, satisfying and productive) work environment. These standards are sufficiently aligned to the Essentials of Magnetism processes to make this tool suitable for measuring healthy work environments. OBJECTIVES: To identify differences in staff nurses' perceptions of the work environment by type of intensive care unit. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive design with strategic sampling was used in this secon

Managing emotional fallout. Parting remarks from America's top psychiatrist. Interview by Diane Coutu.

Last fall, the United States was brutally thrust into a new and dangerous world. As the twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed and the Pentagon burned, the horrible reality of terrorism seared the American consciousness. It touched more than the victims and their families; everyone who sat transfixed before the horrific images on TV lived through the trauma. In a sense, we were all eyewitnesses, and we must all cope with feelings of anger, stress, and anxiety. That poses a huge immediate challenge for business, because it is largely in the workplace--where we spend so many of our waki

Impact of skin cancer prevention on outdoor aquatics staff: the Pool Cool program in Hawaii and Massachusetts.

BACKGROUND: Aquatic staff, including lifeguards, are exposed to intense sunlight for many hours each day and are likely to be at a relatively high risk for developing skin cancer. However, no interventions have been specifically directed to staff at outdoor swimming pool sites. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial among aquatic staff at 28 outdoor pool sites in Hawaii and Massachusetts. Intervention pools received sun protection education and control pools received education on child injury prevention. Staff in both arms received orientation sessions and led instruction during

Evaluation of the IMPACT blood pressure program.

To evaluate the incremental effectiveness of a work-site blood pressure control program, we conducted a randomized, controlled trial at four work sites with established health promotion programs. Workers with blood pressures of 140/90 mm Hg or higher were eligible. Eighty subjects were assigned to receive a referral to a community physician, monthly 10-minute work-site counseling sessions including blood pressure readings, and personalized mailings, whereas 79 control subjects received only a physician referral. Results for 74 intervention and 71 control subjects were obtained after 1 year. As

Physiotherapists' and occupational therapists' experiences of working with people with atypical Parkinson's conditions.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to gain deeper understanding of the experiences of occupational therapists and physiotherapists, working with those with atypical Parkinson's conditions, within the UK. A literature review identified that research into these roles is limited and unrepresentative. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative approach, informed by hermeneutic phenomenology was used to guide the study design. Semi-structured, online interviews, focussed on therapists' experiences of success and challenge, were completed with six physiotherapists, and three occupational therapists,

Workers' compensation claims among private skilled nursing facilities, Ohio, 2001-2012.

INTRODUCTION: Skilled nursing facilities have one of the highest rates of occupational injury and illness among all industries. This study quantifies the burden of occupational injury and illness in this industry using data from a single state-based workers' compensation (WC) system. METHODS: Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation claims from 2001 to 2012 were analyzed among privately owned, state-insured skilled nursing facilities and are presented as claim counts and rates per 100 full-time equivalents (FTE). Worker, employer, incident, and injury characteristics were examined among all claim

Opportunities for improving the safety of dairy parlor workers.

One aspect of a successful dairy business is attracting and retaining skilled staff. The ability to do this is influenced by workplace attractiveness, one aspect of which is worker comfort and safety. Working with heavy machinery and animals makes dairy farming a dangerous occupation relative to many other sectors. Milking is the most time-consuming task on pasture-based dairy farms, and the parlor is the logical site of a number of injuries, although little is known about their causes or their relationship to parlor design and management. To investigate worker safety further, we conducted an
