Some factors contributing to protein-energy malnutrition in the middle belt of Nigeria.

A number of risk factors leading to malnutrition were investigated among 400 mothers of malnourished children in the middle belt of Nigeria. Poverty, family instability, poor environmental sanitation, faulty weaning practices, illiteracy, ignorance, large family size and preventable infections are the main factors responsible for malnutrition. The strategies for intervention are in the area of health education emphasizing the importance of breastfeeding, family stability, responsible parenthood and small family sizes through culturally acceptable family planning methods. There is need to impro

Are mental health services fit for purpose in modern multicultural Australia?

Australia is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse nations globally, yet its mental health system has not kept pace with its demography, resulting in persistent gaps in integration, service planning and delivery, and equity outcomes. This perspective draws on The State of Multicultural Mental Health in Australia, a national report commissioned by Mental Health Australia's Embrace Multicultural Mental Health project, and funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing. The research combined secondary analyses of the 2020-2022 National Study of Men

Association of Socioeconomic Factors With Oral Health in Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases remain disproportionately prevalent among older adults. However, evidence on oral health inequalities among older adults remains dispersed across studies that have used different socioeconomic indicators and oral health measures and has not been synthesised. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise the evidence on the association between socioeconomic factors and oral health among older adults aged 75 years and older. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The Medline, Embase, and CENTRAL databases were searched. Studies reporting

Meducide - Towards a new conceptual framework for the destruction of medical education in armed conflicts.

Wars and armed conflicts are widely recognised as a threat to health systems, yet the destruction of medical education is still too often treated as a secondary educational disruption. This opinion article argues that attacks on medical schools, teaching hospitals, clinical placements, accreditation systems and faculty pipelines should be understood as a distinct form of long-term public health harm. I propose the term "meducide" to describe the systematic destruction, dismantling or incapacitation of medical education during war, whether by direct attack or by structural conditions that rende

Classification of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes based on administrative registry data: a nationwide study from Norway.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) differ in health care needs. Precise prevalence estimates by type are important for health care planning. DATA AND METHODS: This validation study used Norwegian health registry data to develop a T1D/T2D classification method, using the Norwegian Diabetes Register for Adults (NDR-A) as reference standard. Our study population consisted of all individuals 18 years and older residing in Norway in 2022 (N = 4,315,563). We used Cohen's kappa to assess agreement between the classification method and the NDR-A. RESULTS: The established cla

Health Care Experiences of Patients With Spinal Cord Injury in the Preconception, Antepartum, and Postpartum Period.

OBJECTIVES: Women comprise approximately 20% of all adults living with spinal cord injury (SCI), and incidence of SCI among women continues to increase annually. Despite the profound impact of SCI on women in their reproductive years, there is a paucity of literature on the unique health care needs and concerns in this population. We examined the health care experiences of these patients, spanning the preconception to postpartum period. METHODS: Data was obtained from a large online observational questionnaire examining reproductive health outcomes of people with SCI between 2019 and 2021. Ov

Strengthening health financing at sub-national level in Kenya: a stakeholder and needs mapping through a mixed methods approach.

INTRODUCTION: health financing aims to ensure that the overall goal of the health system is attained. Countries with decentralised healthcare systems such as Kenya, face further challenges due to limited public financial management capacity within sub-national governments. While partner support has proved impactful in addressing these challenges, there is a paucity of evidence on the nature and distribution of the support in Kenya. This study sought to examine the current technical support and health financing support offered by partners across the 47 counties in Kenya. METHODS: the study use

Putting one health to the test: Operational challenges and critical reflections from the global South.

One Health as a policy framework to tackle zoonoses has gained wide-ranging validation with multiple international organizations throwing their collective might behind it. Such endorsement has convinced several governments to adopt One Health as a national strategy to address zoonoses. Although some argue that One Health is so many things that there are in fact multiple 'One Healths', others find that most international policy documents that use the One Health framing contain certain key recommendations, with intersectoral coordination and disease surveillance prominent among them. In this pap

Racial and ethnic differences in behavioral health, criminal legal system involvement, and service needs among mental health court participants: Implications for service delivery.

Mental Health Courts (MHCs), an alternative to incarceration, aim to address behavioral health, social needs, and criminal recidivism and serve many adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder (COD). Despite the growth in MHCs, little research has examined ethnic/racial differences in behavioral health and service needs of individuals with COD. This study used data from behavioral health and social assessments administered to 146 adults with COD entering a Massachusetts MHC. Multivariate linear and logistic regression controlling for key demographics tested differences be

Assessment of reporting sites for acute flaccid paralysis surveillance in Ethiopia: implications for planning of active case search visits.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance standards recommend documentation of the role of each potentially reporting site for evidence -based planning and tailoring support for active surveillance visits. This study assessed the contribution of various sites as source and quality of AFP cases reported over a five -year period in Ethiopia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of AFP surveillance data collected from 2010-2014 in Ethiopia. Analyses were done using EPI-INFO version 7 for calculating frequencies and proportions, and testing p

Comparing maternal child health problems and outcomes across public health nursing agencies.

To use aggregated data from health informatics systems to identify needs of maternal and child health (MCH) clients served by county public health agencies and to demonstrate outcomes of services provided. Participating agencies developed and implemented a formal standardized classification data comparison process using structured Omaha System data. An exploratory descriptive analysis of the data was performed. Summary reports of aggregated and analyzed data from records of clients served and discharged in 2005 were compared. Client problems and outcomes were found to be similar across agencie

"It wasn't the plague we expected." Parents' perceptions of the health and environmental impact of opencast coal mining.

This paper explores the health and environmental concerns of parents living close to opencast coal mines in the UK and characterises parental risk perceptions in relation to children's asthma status. This qualitative research was undertaken in tandem with an epidemiological investigation aiming to establish whether opencast coal mining adversely affected children's respiratory health. Using a social construction approach, the centrality of health claims in environmental health disputes becomes apparent for a number of claims-makers. We focus on claims of non-activist participants in an epidemi

State of human papilloma virus vaccine uptake among girls (15-21 years) in Zambia: analysis of a 2024 national survey.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organisation recommends that countries will achieve at least a 90% human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine uptake by the year 2030. Tracking the performance of Zambia is necessary to inform programme implementation and ensuring equitable coverage. This study estimates the prevalence of HPV vaccine uptake in Zambia, and examines its associated factors. METHODS: Data from the 2024 Zambia demographic and health survey was analysed (n = 3,942 girls aged 15–21). Analyses accounted for the complex survey design using sampling weights, clustering, and stratification. Multivar

Breastfeeding support during the Covid-19 pandemic in England: analysis of a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding support interventions are associated with longer breastfeeding duration. Contemporary nationally representative data on breastfeeding support as reported by women in England is lacking. Using English national maternity survey data, we describe sources and modes of breastfeeding support as reported by women who gave birth in 2020; sources of support are compared with earlier maternity surveys (2014, 2016, 2018). We also explore the characteristics associated with source/mode of support in 2020 (n = 4,611). METHODS: Women who breastfed were asked about sources of breas
