BACKGROUND: Gadolinium chelates are relatively safe contrast media used in MRI. Immediate severe adverse effects are exceptionally rare and mostly concern mild anaphylactoid reactions. We report a case of anaphylaxis to gadobenate dimeglumine (Gd-BOPTA, Multihance), a gadolinium-based contrast agent.

The properties of neutrophils, the parameters of lipid peroxidation, and the characteristics of antioxidant protection (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase activity) were studied in the blood of patients with duodenal ulcer and pancreatitis in the course of quamatel administration. The pattern of changes induced by quamatel shows evidence of the antioxidant activity of the drug.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the outcome of specific bronchial reactivity to occupational agents in patients with occupational asthma who have been removed from exposure to the offending agents and to identify risk factors for the persistence of specific bronchial reactivity.
DATA SOURCES: A PubMed (National Library of Medicine) search of articles published from January 1, 1985, through December 31, 2001, with the keywords occupational asthma and bronchial reactivity was performed.
STUDY SELECTION: This article represents a synthesis of these PubMed sources and the opinion of the author.

Antihistamines, which are readily available over the counter in sleeping aids, are commonly found in intentional overdoses. We report three new cases of severe rhabdomyolysis related to ingestion of these agents. This is a rarely reported but potentially overlooked complication among patients who present to the emergency center after intentional overdoses. We also describe the potential mechanism of muscle injury in antihistamine overdoses and comment on the potential for cross-reactivity of antihistamines with the urine screen for phencyclidine.

Appropriate management of rhinitis or sinusitis may be an important component in effective management of coexisting or complicating conditions, such as asthma, allergic conjunctivitis, or chronic otitis media. CONCLUSIONS: Cetirizine is a safe second generation antihistamine. It is effective especially in the treatment of urticaria and reduces significantly the pruritus of atopic dermatitis. An individual dosage should be chosen based on the severity of symptoms.
