INTRODUCTION: Due to social norms and the use of clothes the gluteal region of the body is only partially exposed to sun. However, under certain circumstances this skin area may be left unprotected against sunlight. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sunlight on the gluteal region.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic polyneuropathy of the feet and legs obscures the diagnosis of critical limb ischaemia (CLI) because of lack of pain sensation. Since 1 1/2 year we performed duplex-sonographic examinations including flowmetry of the portal system and hepatic artery in children with biliary atresia. In children with hepatofugal collaterals we found a significant decreased Time Average Velocity (TAV) with 0.09 m/s against the control group with TAV of 0.18 m/s. In 22 premature children (12 normal prematures and 10 with brain pathology) echodensity was measured as average grey scale values. For performing the measurements, echoencephalograms were recorded on videotape and analysed by an IBM-AT computer and a high resolution framegrabber. An evident difference of echodensity was measured between normal parenchyma, skull, fresh cerebral haemorrhages and cerebral oedema.
