Residual limb strength and functional performance measures in individuals with unilateral transtibial amputation.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with lower limb amputation exhibit lower residual limb strength compared to their sound limb. Deficits in residual limb knee flexion and extension strength may impact functional performance during tasks relevant to daily living. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does knee flexor and extensor strength in the residual limb impact functional outcome measures, such as walking energetics and performance metrics, in individuals with unilateral transtibial amputation? METHODS: Fourteen individuals with traumatic unilateral transtibial amputation were recruited for this observational study.

The gelatinases, matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9, play individual roles in skeleton development.

The gelatinases, a subgroup of the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) superfamily are composed of two members; MMP2 and MMP9. They are known to degrade gelatin among other components of the extracellular matrix. Recently, the two gelatinases were found to be necessary for neural crest cell migration and to compensate for each other loss in these cells. To characterize their involvement in the skeletal system, and to better reveal their individual or common roles, we have generated double knockout (dKO) mice, lacking both MMP2 and MMP9. Comprehensive analysis of the skeleton morphological and mec

Craniofacial and dentoalveolar morphology in individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex multisystem genetic disorder with distinct genetic and clinical features. Among other clinical symptoms, PWS is characterized by severe infantile hypotonia with feeding problems, childhood onset hyperphagia, obesity, scoliosis, short stature combined with growth hormone deficiency and developmental delay. PWS is associated with facial dysmorphology, orofacial dysfunction, oral abnormalities, low salivary flow and subsequent severe tooth wear. Little is known about the craniofacial growth direction or dental and skeletal relationships in indi

Imaging of the Osteoporotic Spine - Quantitative Approaches in Diagnostics and for the Prediction of the Individual Fracture Risk.

Osteoporosis is a highly prevalent systemic skeletal disease that is characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural bone deterioration. It predisposes to fragility fractures that can occur at various sites of the skeleton, but vertebral fractures (VFs) have been shown to be particularly common. Prevention strategies and timely intervention depend on reliable diagnosis and prediction of the individual fracture risk, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has been the reference standard for decades. Yet, DXA has its inherent limitations, and other techniques have shown potential as vi

Periodontitis in First Degree-Relatives of Individuals With Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Short Narrative Review.

Periodontal disease (PD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are chronic inflammatory diseases with a bi-directional relationship. Both share common genetic and environmental risk factors and result in the progressive destruction of bone and connective tissue. First degree relatives of patients with RA (FDR-RA) are one of the at-risk populations for RA. The etiopathogenic mechanisms of their susceptibility are currently being explored, focusing mostly on the role of anti-cyclic citrullinated protein/ peptide antibodies (ACPA) in triggering RA. Oral microbiota and their relation with oral health has

When and how should we use imaging in individuals at risk of rheumatoid arthritis?

In recent years rheumatologists have begun to shift focus from early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to studying individuals at risk of developing the disease. It is now possible to use blood, clinical and imaging biomarkers to identify those at risk of progression before the onset of clinical synovitis. The use of imaging, in particular ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), has become much more widespread in individuals at-risk of RA. Numerous studies have demonstrated that imaging can help us understand RA pathogenesis as well as identifying individuals at high risk of progression.

Sharp Edge Eye Syndrome: A Case Report and Survey of Self-Identified Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Sharp edge eye syndrome (SEES), sometimes known as visual looming syndrome, is a condition in which the patient experiences ocular pain or discomfort when viewing or mentally picturing sharp objects and edges. Patients may present for medical care because they perceive the condition to represent an ophthalmic problem or a sign of a more serious underlying condition. An individual case report of SEES is included to aid in illustrating syndrome characteristics. Our aim is to describe the syndrome, vision-related quality of life (VRQOL), and psychosocial characteristics in patients wi

Protothecosis in the mucosa of the pharynx mimicking pharyngeal cancer in an immunocompetent individual: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Protothecosis is a rare infection in humans and animals caused by the achlorophyllic algae Prototheca species. More than half of the protothecosis cases are cutaneous infections, and most cases are observed in immunocompromised individuals. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of Prototheca wickerhamii infection in the mucosa of the pharynx in a 53-year-old immunocompetent woman with an incidentally found mass lesion at the left tongue base. Histopathological findings of the mass lesion suggested cryptococcosis, but P. wickerhamii was identified from the oropharynx scrape culture b

Individual and cumulative risk factors in developmental language disorder: A case-control study.

Many mental disorders (MD) share common etiology, fuelling debates about the specificity of clinical categories and whether the presence of specific risk factors (RF) can distinguish among them. The study of developmental language disorder (DLD), more specifically, has been further hindered by a lack of consensus regarding its definition. These limitations increase the risk of under-detection and lifelong consequences for affected children. This paper aims (1) to document which individual RF allow differentiating DLD from other MD and (2) to compare the cumulative RF between children with DLD

Circulatory amino acid responses to milk consumption in dairy and lactose intolerant individuals.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Self-reported digestive intolerance to dairy foods is common. As dairy can be an important source of dietary protein, this study aimed to identify whether milk protein digestion is compromised in individuals with digestive intolerance. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Adult women (n = 40) were enroled in this double-blinded, randomised cross-over trial, with digestive symptoms characterised using a lactose challenge and self-reported digestive symptom questionnaire. Participants were classified as either lactose intolerant (LI, n = 10), non-lactose dairy intolerant (NLDI, n = 20) or d

Recommendations to encourage participation of individuals from diverse backgrounds in psychiatric genetic studies.

We present innovative research practices in psychiatric genetic studies to ensure representation of individuals from diverse ancestry, sex assigned at birth, gender identity, age, body shape and size, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Due to histories of inappropriate and harmful practices against marginalized groups in both psychiatry and genetics, people of certain identities may be hesitant to participate in research studies. Yet their participation is essential to ensure diverse representation, as it is incorrect to assume that the same genetic and environmental factors influence the risk for

Shorter Telomeres Among Individuals With Physical Disability: The Moderating Role of Perceived Stress.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests that individuals with physical disability may suffer from psychological distress and accelerated cellular aging, manifested by shortened telomere length (TL), compared with healthy individuals. Studies indicate that high levels of perceived stress and depression may increase the physiological susceptibility and, thus, may contribute to a short TL. However, the moderating role of perceived stress and depression within the relationship between physical disability and TL remains unknown. METHOD: The participants consisted of 119 male subjects (mean age 54.36 years,
