Positive emotional harm prevention (safer) gambling messages: Results of an online experiment.

OBJECTIVE: The United Kingdom is set to replace gambling industry slogans such as "gamble responsibly" with independently designed messages. One of the seven independently designed Australian messages is a positive emotional message, intended to leverage positive feelings to enact behavioral change. This study sought to compare this and other proposed positive emotional messages against novel alternatives. METHOD: U.K.-based gamblers (N = 4,204) rated 10 positive emotional messages on four Likert scales (e.g., "this message makes me want to gamble less"; "this message is relevant to me") and

Impact of online gambling on youth problem behaviors during COVID-19 periods in South Korea.

This study investigates the impact of online gambling on problem behaviors among South Korean adolescents across three phases of the COVID-19 pandemic: pre-pandemic (2018), early pandemic (2020), and late pandemic (2022). We applied a doubly robust estimation approach that combines propensity score matching with regression analysis using nationally representative survey data from the Korea Problem Gambling Agency. Our findings indicate that online gambling significantly intensified adolescents' problem behaviors in all periods, with a more pronounced effect observed during the late pandemic ph

Longitudinal bidirectional relationships between problematic smartphone use and psychotic-like experiences among young adults: The mediating role of excessive daytime sleepiness.

Although prior research has indicated that problematic social media use is associated with psychiatric disorders, few studies have specifically investigated the bidirectional relationship between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), as well as the mediating role of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). To address these gaps, the present study employed a three-wave longitudinal design, integrating Cross-Lagged Panel Modeling (CLPM) and Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Modeling (RI-CLPM) to explore these relationships in depth. A total of 6153 college students

Is exposure to online misogyny associated with mental health outcomes in girls and young women? A systematic review of longitudinal studies.

IntroductionThe mental health gender gap is well established, but there is limited understanding of why girls and young women consistently report higher rates of common mental health conditions. The emergence of online misogyny has garnered attention in recent years, highlighted in cultural debate surrounding extremist influencers and the 'manosphere'. Understanding the mental health impacts of online misogyny on girls, young women and gender-diverse people is essential given the growing prevalence of gender-based harm in digital spaces.ObjectivesTo establish whether exposure to online misogyn

The Longitudinal Relationship Between Fear of Missing Out and Adolescent Problematic Mobile Phone Use: The Role of Desire and Craving.

Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) is one of the risk factors for problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) among adolescents. However, previous findings have been inconsistent and have not comprehensively considered the roles of cognition and emotion. Grounded in the I-PACE model, this study examines the role of desire thinking and craving in the predictive relationship between FoMO and PMPU among adolescents through path analysis, while employing network analysis to identify the most central and influential nodes within this mechanism. This study focused on adolescents and employed the FoMO scale, the Des

Impact of a nurse-led and a web-based psychoeducational program for advanced cancer patients and their caregivers: Results of a three-arm randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Advanced cancer impacts the lives of both patients and their family caregivers. They often experience substantial declines in quality of life and physical, emotional, and spiritual distress that generate significant unmet psychosocial care needs. These effects are interrelated. Dyadic psychoeducational interventions, helping dyads to manage the impact of the disease and maintain their quality of life, demonstrate benefits by concurrently addressing challenges for oncology patients and family caregivers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a face-to-face nurse-led a

Substance Use While Sexting Moderates the Effect of Sexual Identity Development on Offline and Online Sexting Consequences Among Adolescent Sexual Minority Males.

Research suggests that for adolescent sexual minority males (ASMM), sexting may be a way of exploring one's sexuality and a safer way to develop romantic and sexual relationships than doing so offline. However, there is a paucity of research on the positive and negative consequences of sexting in this population. Although sexual identity development processes have been linked to positive and negative outcomes of in-person sexual experiences, they have not been examined in relation to sexting. Substance use while sexting may increase the risk of offline and online negative sexting consequences,

Clearing the haze: novel methodology objectively assessing children's online exposure to tobacco and vape marketing.

Marketing of tobacco and vape products is effective at recruiting new users; yet, little is known about children's online exposure to such material. This research aimed to develop a methodology for assessing children's exposure to, and engagement with, online tobacco and vape marketing. This pilot study used data from the innovative Kids Online Aotearoa Study in which 156 11-13-year-olds from schools in the Wellington region of Aotearoa New Zealand used Zoom teleconferencing software to record real-time, screen-shared internet use for four consecutive days. We developed a coding framework to a…

Relationships Between Motives for Cannabis and Cannabidiol Use in People Who Co-Use: Results From the European Web Survey on Drugs.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis is one of the most commonly used psychoactive substances globally. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating cannabis compound increasingly used for various purposes, especially among cannabis users. However, to date, there are no data on the relationships between cannabis and CBD motives. Understanding these relationships and characterising people who co-use cannabis and CBD by their motives can help adapt marketing policies and foster CBD-based harm reduction practices for people who use cannabis. METHODS: We selected cannabis users from the third wave of the European W
