Livestock producers and their employees sometimes experience unintentional needlestick injury (NSI) while vaccinating or injecting medications into animals. There is little published regarding the medical complications that can develop from this occupational exposure. The objectives of this study were to (1) perform a retrospective review of animal-related NSIs treated at a tertiary medical center of a rural state; and (2) review the risks of NSI and measures to decrease their occurrence. Medical records of patients with NSI related to animal injection were identified from the University of Io

OBJECTIVE: Perinatal stroke commonly causes childhood neurological morbidity. Presumed perinatal ischemic stroke (PPIS) defines children presenting outside a normal perinatal period with chronic, focal infarction on neuroimaging. Infarcts are assumed to represent arterial strokes, but recent evidence suggests the periventricular venous infarction (PVI) of infants born preterm may also occur in utero and present as PPIS. Using the largest published cohort, we aimed to define arterial and PVI PPIS syndromes and their outcomes.
METHODS: A PPIS consecutive cohort was identified (SickKids Children

Previous foot studies have consistently reported high prevalence estimates in self-reported foot disorders. Few population studies, however, have attempted to assess the impact of foot problems in terms of pain and disability so that the burden associated with foot pain is unknown. A cross-sectional postal survey was conducted on a random community sample of 4780 individuals with 3417 (84%) responding. Subjects reporting foot pain in the past month, current pain and marking one item on the Manchester Foot Pain and Disability Index were classified as having disabling foot pain. Those with disab

BACKGROUND: Extraforaminal lumbar disc herniations and foraminal stenosis are challenging due to nerve root proximity. Conventional lateral transforaminal endoscopy requires a long oblique trajectory and is obstructed by the iliac crest at L5-S1. We describe a full-endoscopic monoportal Wiltse paraspinal technique with inferior foraminal docking and its preliminary outcomes.
METHODS: Ten consecutive patients (4 women, 6 men; mean age 61.1 years, range 50-76) were prospectively analyzed between September and December 2025. Pathologies comprised 7 extraforaminal disc herniations and 3 foraminal

The peripheral blood heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (H/L ratio) is widely used as an immunophenotypic indicator in poultry, but its tissue-level molecular basis remains unclear. In this study, individuals with extreme high and low H/L ratios were selected from 113 Yellow-legged Ma chickens, and sex stratification was incorporated. Liver and spleen histology, serum biochemical and oxidative stress indices, transcriptomic data, and metabolomic data were integrated to characterize H/L-associated hepatic immunometabolic features. The results showed no significant differences between the high- and

BACKGROUND: No-touch (NT) saphenous vein harvest is a technique that minimizes intimal injury and has been shown to improve patency. This study aimed to directly compare NT saphenous vein grafts (SVGs) to conventional skeletonized (CON) SVGs through a meta-analysis.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted for randomized controlled trials comparing the angiographic patency of NT-SVG and CON-SVG. The primary outcome was graft occlusion as a proportion of the total grafts assessed. Secondary outcomes were graft occlusion per patient, all-cause mortality, and leg wound complications

BACKGROUND: The consensus on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention involves the suppression of dynamic knee valgus (DKV). The gold standard for evaluating the DKV includes three-dimensional motion analysis systems; however, these are expensive and cannot be used to evaluate all athletes. Markerless motion-capture systems and joint angle calculations using posture estimation have been reported. However, there have been no reports on the reliability and validity of DKV calculations using posture estimation.
RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aimed to clarify the reliability and validity

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment modality for upper lumbar disc herniation remains unclear. Herein, we compared the clinical efficacy and application value of minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) for upper lumbar disc herniation. We aimed to provide new evidence to guide surgical decisions for treating this condition.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 81 patients with upper lumbar disc herniation admitted between January 2017 and July 2018, including 41 and 40 patients who underwent MIS-

INTRODUCTION: Adults with generalised joint hypermobility including knee joint hypermobility (GJHk) report more knee joint symptoms when compared to adults without GJHk. There is no consensus on best practice for symptom management. For instance, controversy exists regarding the appropriateness and safety of heavy resistance training as an intervention for this specific group. This case series aims to describe a supervised, progressive heavy resistance training program in adults with GJHk and knee pain, the tolerability of the intervention, and the outcomes of knee pain, knee-related quality o

OBJECTIVES: Current strategies for motor recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI) aim to facilitate motor performance through modulation of afferent input to the spinal cord using epidural electrical stimulation (EES). The dorsal root ganglion (DRG) itself, the first relay station of these afferent inputs, has not yet been targeted for this purpose. The current study aimed to determine whether DRG stimulation can facilitate clinically relevant motor response in motor complete SCI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five patients with chronic motor complete SCI were implanted with DRG leads placed bilatera
