Lichen striatus in a child after immunization. A case report.

Lichen striatus is a self-limited, lichenoid eruption particularly common in children. The lesions are located on extremities and less commonly on the trunk, and they follow the developmental lines of Blaschko. The etiology of lichen striatus is as yet unknown. It has been observed after infection or immunization in atopic patients and in siblings. The authors report on a 15-month-old girl that developed lichen striatus along the Blaschko lines on the trunk and one extremity after receiving the combined vaccine against measles, mumps, and rubella. Six months later, complete resolution of the s…

Could it happen here? Vaccine risk controversies and the specter of derailment.

Controversy over vaccine safety has achieved high visibility over the past decade. At the same time, however, levels of coverage for routinely recommended childhood vaccines in the United States are at their highest ever. We examine this apparent paradox. We consider the ways in which concerns over vaccine safety have emerged and diffused through the popular media, legislative hearings, and Internet-based activism. As a case study, we review the controversy over the alleged connection between autism and the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and consider why it had a dramatic effect on the va…

Exploring the evidence surrounding the debate on MMR and autism.

Autism is a poorly understood condition that would appear to be on the increase. There is currently much concern about a possible link between the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination and autism which has resulted in a substantial reduction in the uptake of MMR, putting children at risk of three significant childhood diseases. This article looks at the evidence for a link between MMR and autism, finding that while a plausible hypothesis has been constructed, there is not substantive evidence for such a link and that the quality of this evidence is, in many cases, poor. This is due, in …

[Maternal and childhood immunization in developing countries: success, problems and new approaches].

A quarter century after implementation of the Expanded Program of Immunization by the WHO, partner organizations and member states, significant progress has been made towards eradication of poliomyelitis, elimination of neonatal tetanus, and control of measles. Problems remain due to difficulties involved in extending immunization coverage to some regions (Africa), integrating new vaccines into routine immunization schedules and securing sufficient funding for programs. Injection safety is also a major problem that should be resolved by utilization and proper disposal of single-use auto-disabl…

MRI in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a progressive, slow virus infection of the brain, caused by the measles virus, attacking children and young adults. We investigated 15 patients with SSPE by MRI, with 5 normal and 10 pathological results. In the early period, lesions were in the grey matter and subcortical white matter. They were asymmetrical and had a predilection for the posterior parts of the hemispheres. Later, high-signal changes in deep white matter and severe cerebral atrophy were observed. Parenchymal lesions significantly correlated with the duration of disease. A signific…

[The importance of the vertical transmission of enteroviruses in the epidemiology of congenital viral infections].

A total of 814 newborns were examined using a highly sensitive method of indication of viral antigens. A high incidence of congenital viral infection was revealed: 450 per 1000 live-born children. Enteroviral infections (mainly Coxsackie) ranked first in prevalence. These infections in the newborns are mainly caused by the vertical transmission of enteroviruses from mothers with persistent forms of infections. Virtually all the other viruses (influenza viruses, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, parainfluenza, measles, and rubella viruses) are detected in the newborns included in the group…

Infectious diseases at the Boston City Hospital: the first 60 years.

During the 60 years that followed the opening of the Boston City Hospital in 1864, Boston experienced severe epidemics of diphtheria, scarlatina, and measles. The South Department was created to isolate patients, primarily children, who suffered from those diseases. Smallpox was a serious public health problem, and typhoid fever, pneumonia, and tuberculosis continued to cause high mortality. Diagnoses became more accurate and nursing care improved, although for most diseases treatment was not markedly better. The influenza epidemic in 1918 demonstrated how little could be done for patients. No…

[Active and passive immunization: 1991 status].

Contrary to the regular immunization schedule for children, the majority of immunization are done in adulthood in case of special risks only, such as old age, chronic illness or exposure. The protection against a variety of communicable diseases has to be monitored and if necessary to be boosted regularly. Based on the routine vaccination scheme 1991 of the Federal Department of Public Health, the following vaccinations which are commercially available in Switzerland are discussed in this review: diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae, hepatitis B, influenza, measles + mumps + rubella, meningococc…

[Vaccination coverage of 2-year-old children: a cross-sectional study in the city of Barcelona].

The results of a vaccination coverage cross-sectional survey of two year old children in the city of Barcelona (Spain) are presented. A sample of the cohort born in 1986 was surveyed. Vaccination coverage is 93.16% for measles, 92.02% for mumps, 91.25% for rubella. Up to 91.25% children had received four doses of polio vaccine and 94.67% three doses, while 91.63% had received four doses of DTP vaccine and 95.06% three doses. These results suggest vaccination coverage in Barcelona has improved, but a volume of unvaccinated persons exists which, coupled with vaccine failures may allow the persis…

[Quantitative research on the cyclic fluctuations of the epidemic process in a number of infectious diseases in Bulgaria].

The cyclic nature of the epidemic process in Bulgaria was studied by various methods (spectral analysis, etc.), forming a system. The morbidity dynamics in 10 infectious diseases (scarlet fever, rubella, measles, epidemic parotitis, whooping cough, diphtheria, typhoid fever, enterocolitis, bacterial dysentery, viral hepatitis) over the years of 1909-1983 were studied and cycles covering the periods of 3-4, 5-6, 10-11 and over 16 years were established. The data on the relative part of cyclic processes in the registered morbidity of infectious diseases, as well as information on the prognostica…

Intraventricular administration of interferon and administration of methisoprinol by mouth in the treatment of adult-onset subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

This is thought to be the first report of the use of interferon therapy by intraventricular administration in adult-onset subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. A 22-year-old female patient with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis was treated for three months with interferon by the intraventricular route and methisoprinol (inosiplex) by mouth. There was no obvious clinical improvement during this time, and the cerebrospinal-fluid measles antibody titre remained elevated. The lack of effect of therapy could be attributed partly to the patient's age and to the rapidly progressive deterioration in …

[World epidemiological situation: viral disease incidence (author's transl)].

The importance of viral disease, although estimated with difficulty, seems very large in human pathology. Viruses appear to be involved in most of respiratory disease. Moreover, in tropical countries, measles and viral diarrhoeas (mainly rotaviruses) are fatal for many children. But smallpox eradication must be considered as the most important fact which occurred in the field during the last five years, and the consequences of this new situation are discussed. Finally, beyond the recent question of african viral haemorrhagic fevers, one must take in account the increasing prevalence of several…

Pathogenesis of lipoid nephrosis: a disorder of T-cell function.

Clinical observations suggest that lipoid nephrosis is produced by a systemic abnormality of T-cell function resulting in the secretion of a circulating chemical mediator toxic to an immunologically innocent glomerular basement membrane. The lack of evidence of a humoral antibody response, remission induced by measles which modifies cell-mediated immunity, the therapeutic benefits of steroids and cyclophosphamide which also abate cell-mediated responses, and the occurrence of this syndrome in Hodgkin's disease support this hypothesis. The susceptibility of untreated patients to pneumococcal in…

The perinatal health challenges of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases: A narrative review.

The world has seen numerous infectious disease outbreaks in the past decade. In many cases these outbreaks have had considerable perinatal health consequences including increased risk of preterm delivery (e.g., influenza, measles, and COVID-19), and the delivery of low birth weight or small for gestational age babies (e.g., influenza, COVID-19). Furthermore, severe perinatal outcomes including perinatal and infant death are a known consequence of multiple infectious diseases (e.g., Ebola virus disease, Zika virus disease, pertussis, and measles). In addition to vaccination during pregnancy (wh…

Self-reported immunity and opinions on vaccination of hospital personnel among paediatric healthcare workers in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Denmark has no general recommendations for vaccination of healthcare workers (HCWs). We explored the self-reported immunity to varicella, measles, mumps, and rubella, reasons for receiving the influenza vaccine or not, and opinions on vaccination of HCWs against varicella, MMR, pertussis, diphtheria, and influenza among staff from departments with a high risk of exposure to infectious agents. METHODS: From May 2019 to August 2019, a structured questionnaire was distributed to clinical and non-clinical HCWs at a tertiary and a general paediatric department in Denmark. Self-reported…

Progress Toward Rubella and Congenital Rubella Syndrome Control and Elimination - Worldwide, 2000-2018.

Rubella is a leading cause of vaccine-preventable birth defects. Although rubella virus infection usually causes a mild febrile rash illness in children and adults, infection during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, can result in miscarriage, fetal death, stillbirth, or a constellation of birth defects known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). A single dose of rubella-containing vaccine (RCV) can provide lifelong protection (1). In 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated guidance on the use of RCV and recommended capitalizing on the accelerated measles elimination a…

Qualitative Assessment of Vaccination Hesitancy Among Members of the Apostolic Church of Zimbabwe: A Case Study.

Vaccine hesitancy or lack of confidence in vaccines is considered a threat to the success of vaccination programs. The rise and spread of measles outbreaks in southern Africa in 2009-2010 were linked to objections among Apostolic Church members, estimated at about 3.5 million in Zimbabwe as of 2014. To inform planning of interventions for a measles-rubella vaccination campaign, we conducted an assessment of the factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy using data from various stakeholders. Among nine districts in three regions of Zimbabwe, we collected data on religious attitudes toward, and p…
