Heavy metals pollution and health risk assessment in farmed scallops: Low level of Cd in coastal water could lead to high risk of seafood.

Scallops are one of the most common bivalves, large-scale farmed in the coastal areas of China. Three species of scallops (Chlamys farreri, Argopecten irradians and Patinopecten yessoensis) from 10 samples sites along the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea were collected to investigate species-specific and tissues-specific bioaccumulation, spatial-temporal distribution and health risks for people. Cd must be paid attention since Cd concentrations in 96% of scallop samples exceeded standard with the highest Cd bioaccumulation potentials (BCF) >10,000 while those of the other metals were less than the…

Resistance to Antibiotics, Biocides, Preservatives and Metals in Bacteria Isolated from Seafoods: Co-Selection of Strains Resistant or Tolerant to Different Classes of Compounds.

Multi-drug resistant bacteria (particularly those producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases) have become a major health concern. The continued exposure to antibiotics, biocides, chemical preservatives, and metals in different settings such as the food chain or in the environment may result in development of multiple resistance or co-resistance. The aim of the present study was to determine multiple resistances (biocides, antibiotics, chemical preservatives, phenolic compounds, and metals) in bacterial isolates from seafoods. A 75.86% of the 87 isolates studied were resistant to at least one ant…

Accumulation and toxicity of metals (copper, zinc, cadmium, and lead) and organic compounds (geraniol and benzo[a]pyrene) in the oribatid mite Oppia nitens.

The oribatid mite Oppia nitens has been suggested as a test species for ecotoxicological assessment of contaminated boreal soils. Knowledge of the ecotoxicity of pollutants of different modes of action to this species is necessary to assess its relative sensitivity in comparison with other invertebrates. The toxicity of four metals and two organic chemicals to O. nitens was evaluated over a 28- or 35-d period. Mite survival, reproduction, and tissue accumulation were assessed at the end of the test. Reproduction was a more sensitive endpoint than survival for all of the compounds except gerani…

Allergy to nickel or cobalt: tolerance to nickel and cobalt samples in man and in the guinea pig allergic or sensitized to these metals.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, in animals and humans sensitive to nickel or cobalt, the tolerance to manufactured metal samples of nickel and cobalt of a defined metallographic structure, plated or not with a layer of chrome or copper/chrome of a determined thickness. Under the defined experimental conditions, a guinea pig sensitized to one metal (nickel or cobalt) was intolerant to both metals (nickel and cobalt). A plating of chrome or copper/chrome did not act as a protection. In the human, it was not the same: the tolerance to metal samples was determined by the specific sensitivit…

Bioavailability-based source apportionment and source-specific risk assessment of heavy metals in cultivated soils from high geological background and lead-zinc smelting areas.

The chemical speciation of heavy metals (HMs) is key to determining their bioavailability and toxicity. Traditional source apportionment and risk assessment of soil HMs based on total concentrations often overestimate the actual risks. This study selected the soils in the multi-contaminated area with high geological background and lead-zinc smelting activities in northwestern Guizhou, Southwest China, as the research object and established a source-specific risk assessment framework based on bioavailability for six HMs (Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni). Results showed that the residual fraction (F4) ac…

Seasonal variations in heavy metals concentration in water and sediment and associated ecological and human health risk assessment in Chembarambakkam lake, Tamil Nadu, India.

Climate-induced hydrological variability and enhanced anthropogenic pressures are increasingly imposed on fresh water ecosystems, and the transport and bio availability of heavy metals are strongly affected via these pressures. It is therefore essential to know the changes of the metal concentrations seasonally so that this ecosystem integrity can be maintained and the risk to anthropological health can be reduced. The current study aimed to evaluate the seasonal variations of major heavy metals As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Fe, and Al in the water and sediments of Chembarambakkam Lake, which is…
