Here we examine the effect of ranitidine bismuth citrate (RBC) on motile and cystic forms of Borrelia burgdorferi in vitro, to determine whether it could cure this bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal tract. Of the total of 35 clinical isolates from blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid in patients from the Zagreb area in the period from 1996-1999 Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B was identified in 33 (94%). Between January and April 1998, a meningitis outbreak due to serogroup A meningococcus took place in Senegal. The outbreak began in Gandiaye, 165 km to the east of Dakar, and progressed towards the towns of Gossas, Niakkhar, Guinguineo, Fatik, Foundiougne, Dioffior, Sokone, Kaolack, and Nioro. At the same time, the outbreak reached regions of Kaffrine, Koungheul, and Tambacounda in the east of Senegal. A total of 1,350 cases and 200 deaths were reported. The limited number of effective antituberculosis drugs available necessitates optimizing current treatments. We show that melatonin, which is synthesized in the pineal gland, can cause at least a threefold increase in the efficacy of isoniazid. This suggests that tuberculosis chemotherapy can be improved by innate molecules such as melatonin.

The antipneumococcal activity of MEN 10700 was compared with those of nine other compounds by MIC and time-kill kinetics. As the result of a structurally guided isolation to identify lead compounds for the treatment of opportunistic infections of AIDS, the dihydrochloride salt of a new symmetrical pyrrole dimer debromosceptrin (1), and two known pyrrole analogues (2 and 3) were isolated from the Caribbean sponge Agelas coniferacollected from Belize. The structure of debromosceptrin was identified by analysis of spectral data. 15N spectral data assignments were made for compounds 1-3.
