A cytochrome cb-type enzyme with cytochrome c-oxidase activity was purified from an aerobic phototrophic bacterium Roseobacter denitrificans. The enzyme was solubilized with sucrose monodecanoate from the membranes of R. denitrificans grown aerobically under light conditions, and purified to electrophoretic homogeneity. An epidemic of mumps in Lithuania started in December 1998 and continued until May 2000. The total registered number of cases was about 11.000 of a total of 3,7 million inhabitants in Lithuania (29,7 cases/10,000). Virus-containing samples were collected from 80 patients treated at the hospital of Kaunas from October 1999 until the end of the epidemic. Two proteins of Klebsiella pneumoniae, termed Yor5 and Yco6, were analyzed for their capacity to participate in the reversible phosphorylation of proteins on tyrosine. Acute rheumatic fever (ARF), a sequelae of group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection, is the most common cause of preventable childhood heart disease worldwide. The molecular basis of ARF and the subsequent rheumatic heart disease are poorly understood. Reduced mucociliary clearance in primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) causes recurrent infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract. The disease is usually inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. To identify a gene locus for PCD, we studied a large consanguineous family of Arabic origin. We characterized the genetic nature of beta-thalassaemia in northern Portugal. Of the 164 patients studied three were beta-thalassaemia major cases (one IVS-1-6/beta degrees 39 and two homozygous IVS-1-110). Three bioactivity-variant neurotoxins, BmK M1, M4 and M8, have been purified from Chinese scorpion BmK venom. They possess distinct toxic activities against mice in vivo. These proteins also have different electrostatic properties. Antimicrobial peptides, named tachystatins A, B, and C, were identified from hemocytes of the horseshoe crab Tachypleus tridentatus. A number of cases have been identified (seven unrelated individuals from the Northern Ireland bone marrow donor registry and two family groups) where an HLA-A*24 allele fails to express the normal HLA-A24 antigen. Family information has revealed common haplotypes with respect to each non-expressed allele indicating that the occurrence of these mutations has been a recent event. Two methods for the clinical typing of these alleles have been evaluated--PCR-SSOP and PCR-SSCP analysis.
