Role of Physical Activity and Cardiac Rehabilitation in Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a standard treatment for several malignancies, and >50,000 HSCT are performed annually worldwide. As survival after HSCT improves, cardiovascular disease and associated risk factors have gained importance as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in this cohort. In this article, we detail the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and their impact in patients undergoing HSCT. Additionally, we critically review the data on the impact of physical exercise in patients undergoing HSCT. Although limited by significant heterogeneity in metho

Chronic, self-reported fatigue in adult immunotherapy patients and healthy controls: No association with cardiopulmonary exercise testing parameters.

This study examined whether cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) performance parameters are associated with chronic cancer-related fatigue in patients receiving immunotherapy checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) and healthy controls. Also, the differences in energy expenditure of steady-state cycling and gross efficiency were assessed during submaximal cycling efforts. This study involved patients (n = 19, 48 ± 13 years) receiving PD-1, PD-L1 checkpoint inhibitors and controls of similar age (n = 21, 49 ± 17 years). During the first visit, data on medical history, previous physical activity records, an

Feasibility of a tailored and virtually supported home exercise program for people with multiple myeloma using a novel eHealth application.

INTRODUCTION: eHealth exercise interventions have the unique ability to leverage the benefits of in-person programming (tailoring and supervision) with the benefits of home programming (flexibility). There may be a role for eHealth-delivered exercise for people with multiple myeloma (MM), as exercise tailoring and supervision are critical for successful outcomes due to the significant impacts/risks of myeloma-related side effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the safety, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of a 12-week virtually supported eHealth exercise program. METHODS: Par

IMPROVE-BMT: a protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial of prehabilitation exercise for adult haematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.

IntroductionHaematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) in adults is an intensive medical procedure for a variety of haematological malignancies. Although there is a large body of evidence demonstrating the negative effects of HSCT on physical function and psychosocial parameters, there is limited evidence on the impact of HSCT on body composition and bone health. Further, aerobic and resistance-training exercise interventions aimed at improving physical function and patient-reported outcomes largely take place during the peritransplant and post-transplant period. Prehabilitative exercise, or e

Role of Cardio-Oncology Rehabilitation in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell (CAR-T) Therapy.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy often lead to severe sarcopenia and cachexia during treatment, making it difficult to maintain exercise tolerance. Consequently, "cancer rehabilitation" programs have been implemented to sustain and improve physical activity and motor function. Hematologic malignancies often involve the use of cardiotoxic drugs. Moreover, graft-vs.-host disease associated with allo-HSCT and the cytokine release syndrome in CAR-T therapy elevate the risk of cardiovascular complications. Thus, esta

Rhabdomyolysis secondary to COVID-19 infection and vaccination: a review of literature.

Rhabdomyolysis (RML), characterized by the breakdown of skeletal muscle fibers and the release of muscle contents into the bloodstream, has emerged as a notable complication associated with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and vaccination. Studies have reported an increased incidence of RML in individuals with severe COVID-19 infection. However, the exact mechanisms remain unclear and are believed to involve the host's immune response to the virus. Furthermore, RML has been documented as a rare adverse event following COVID-19 vaccination, particularly with mRNA vaccines. Proposed

Lifestyle in Multiple Myeloma - a longitudinal cohort study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Deterioration in bone health is one of the presenting symptoms of Multiple Myeloma (MM), a cancer of plasma cells. As a consequence of this condition, patients suffer bone pain and bone damage and report cancer-related fatigue, resulting in deterioration in their quality of life. Evidence in patients with solid tumours shows promise for the positive effects of physical activity on quality of life. However, in the case of patients with MM a better understanding of the association between physical fitness and quality of life factors is still required. Therefore, this cohort study aim

Lifestyle considerations in multiple myeloma.

As the prognosis for multiple myeloma (MM) has significantly improved and patients remain on therapy longer, there is a need for supportive care interventions to optimize patient quality of life (QOL) and functional status over the course of cancer treatment. MM is characterized by a significant symptom burden and a relatively lower QOL compared to other cancers. This review evaluates the role of healthy lifestyle behaviors in improving both the physical functioning and psychological well-being of the MM population. We (1) describe the current literature on physical activity, weight management
